Chapter 13 provides comprehensive knowledge regarding machinability of construction materials and characterizes various meanings of this specific material feature, allowing effective selection of machining conditions. Factors affecting machinability and typical causes of low machinability are discussed. Three groups of machinability criteria are selected, including basic, substitutive and auxiliary ones. Grinding Tungsten Carbide Used for Manufacturing Gun Drills

This paper presents a study of grinding cemented carbide DK460UF (91 % WC and 9 % Co), a material used to produce cutting tools with solid cutting edges. The aim is to establish the manufacturing conditions that lead to high surface quality. A model of the main factors that influence the grinding process is presented first. Following that, grinding wheel wear and surface roughness are analysed. Grinding wheel wear is studied in experimental conditions under which small diameter gun drills were sharpened with two diamond grinding wheels of different grain sizes. Role of plastic deformation and microstructure in the micro-electrochemical behaviour of Ti–6Al–4V in sodium chloride solution

Abstract The role of alloying elements and the influence of plastic deformation on the micro-electrochemical behaviour and the pitting corrosion susceptibility of TiAl6V4 have been investigated in 10 g/L NaCl using the electrochemical microcell technique. Local electrochemical measurements have revealed that both the increase of surface roughness and the increase of dislocation density have impact on the electrochemical behaviour of TiAl6V4 after plastic deformation. Positron Annihilation Study of Defects Induced by Various Cutting Methods in Stainless Steel Grade 304

We report in this article the comparison of the subsurface zones (SZs) in austenitic stainless steel 304 samples created by three cutting techniques, i.e., the laser cutting (LC), abrasive water jet (AWJ), and traditional milling cutting (MC). The crystal lattice defects distribution in this zone were investigated using the positron annihilation method. It was shown that the MC creates the great number mainly edge dislocations decorated by vacancies. Their concentration decreases with the increase of the depth from the cut surface. Aim: To visualize by Atomic Force Microscopy the alterations induced on Enterococcus. faecalis surface after treatment with 2 types of laser: Erbium chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser and Diode laser. Material and Methods: Bacterial suspensions from overnight cultures of E. faecalis were irradiated during 30 seconds with the laser-lights at 1 W and 2 W of power, leaving one untreated sample as control. The effects of cryogenic cooling on surface integrity in hard machining: A comparison with dry machining

Abstract This paper presents results of an experimental study of cryogenic machining of hardened AISI 52100 steel, focusing on surface integrity. Experiments were performed under dry and cryogenic cooling conditions using CBN tools varying cutting speeds, workpiece hardness and tool geometry.
