Influence of machining parameters on surface roughness in WEDM cutting
2020
Wire Electrical Discharge Machining is a cutting method used for obtaining parts with complex geometries or for cutting hard metals. Optimisation of TA6V alloy surface laser texturing using an experimental design approach
2008
International audience; Active surfaces of plastic injection moulds are nowadays textured using classical techniques (chemical etching or EDM). Replacement of these technologies by a laser technology introduces a big flexibility: absence of mechanical contact with the tool, decrease of the effluent's volume and a big machining precision, even in the case of the complex forms as injection moulds for example. This paper reports the experimental study of the surface laser texturing of TA6V alloy. The influence of the operating factors on the laser texturing process has been studied using two experimental approaches: Taguchi methodology and response surface methodology (RSM). Empirical models h…
Comparative assessment of surface roughness produced by hard machining with mixed ceramic tools including 2D and 3D analysis
2005
Abstract This paper provides a new comprehensive analysis of part surface finish in continuous dry turning of a hardened construction steel when using mixed alumina cutting tools. Consequently, the surface profiles (2D arragement) and surface microstereometries (3D arragement) generated during different hard part turning operations on a 40H low chromium alloy steel (equivalent to AISI 5140 or DIN 41Cr4), heat treated to the hardness of about 60 HRC, were evaluated. As a result, this paper aggregates the multi-parameters characterization of the surface roughness with the machined surface structure obtained at the three selected feed rates and constant cutting speed of 100 m/min. Results show…
Effect of latex on surface structure and wetting of pigment coatings
2010
Abstract The amount and type of latex binder has a significant effect on both the structure and chemical properties of pigment coatings, which affects critical surface properties, e.g., gloss, ink setting rate via liquid absorption, and spreading properties. Increased knowledge is required for improved optimization in practical applications of pigment coating layers. To this end, the effect of binder amount for two different styrene–butadiene latices in kaolin pigment coatings on a base paper was studied, by measuring the surface topography, surface chemistry, and liquid absorption of these coatings. The topography was thoroughly analyzed from nanometer to millimeter length scales by atomic…
The effect of substrate roughness on the static friction of CuO nanowires
2012
Abstract The dependence of static friction on surface roughness was measured for copper oxide nanowires on silicon wafers coated with amorphous silicon. The surface roughness of the substrate was varied to different extent by the chemical etching of the substrates. For friction measurements, the nanowires (NWs) were pushed by an atomic-force microscope (AFM) tip at one end of the NW until complete displacement of the NW was achieved. The elastic bending profile of a NW during this manipulation process was used to calculate the ultimate static friction force. A strong dependence of static friction on surface roughness was demonstrated. The real contact area and interfacial shear strength wer…
Optical, structural, and morphological characterisation of epitaxial ZnO films grown by pulsed-laser deposition
2013
We report on ZnO epitaxial growth by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) on different substrates, such as quartz, sapphire, and GaN template. Approximately 1 mu m-thick films were grown under different substrate temperatures and background oxygen conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated preferential growth along the c-axis direction with a full-width at half maximum(FWHM) of the rocking curve as narrow as 230 arcs in the case of the GaN template. Low-temperature photoluminescence showed A-excitonic emission near 3.36 eV and a FWHM of (DXA)-X-0 emission as small as 2.89 meV at 9 K. Atomic force microscope measurements showed that roughness as low as 18 nm could be obtained. These results p…
Orientation and order in thin films of a combined liquid crystalline polymer
1994
The order in thin films of a combined liquid crystalline polymer is studied by X-ray reflection. Films of thicknesses of less than 200 nm on float glass are investigated as a function of temperature. The polymer with mesogenic groups in the main and side-chains exhibits smectic and cholesteric mesophases. Measurements in the smectic phases show a Bragg peak and smectic layers are oriented parallel to the substrate. The sample is thus macroscopically ordered by the influence of substrate and free surface. The film surface is very smooth after spincoating; surface roughness is typically 0.8 nm. First annealing of samples leads to a significant roughening of the free surface; roughness increas…
Adhesive joining of Aluminum AA6082: the effect of resin and surface treatment
2009
Abstract In this work the effects of both the substrate surface condition and the adhesive properties on single-lap aluminium joint resistance were analysed. The aluminium sheets were mechanically treated with two abrasive surfaces evaluating the induced roughness; four different resins were used in adhesion tests. Moreover, wettability tests were performed in order to evaluate the effect of the above-mentioned parameters on the substrate/adhesive interaction. A design of experiments was defined in order to quantify the effect of the considered factors and their correlation.
Effect of different polishing techniques on surface roughness and bacterial adhesion of three glass ionomer-based restorative materials : in vitro st…
2020
Background Although many reports concluded that polishing of glass ionomers is crucial for smoother surface and limiting the adhesion of cariogenic bacteria, there is no specific surface treatment protocol recommended. A novel material in the same category was released recently claimed to have surface smoothness comparable to resin composite and bacterial adhesion less than other types of glass ionomers. In this study, different polishing systems were tested with three glass ionomers one of them is the novel material to find the most appropriate polishing protocol. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the surface roughness and bacterial adhesion to resin modified glass ionomer, bioactive ion…
Whitening toothpastes effect on nanoparticle resin composite roughness after a brushing challenge: An in vitro study
2019
Background Nowadays, the use of whitening toothpastes is a common habit, especially among young adults, due to aesthetic appeal. On the other hand, little is known regarding the effects of brushing with those newly dentifrices on wear properties of resin composites. Material and methods Thirty specimens of nanoparticle composite resin were fabricated and stored in distilled water for 24 h at 370C. After this, the roughness analysis was performed and submitted to the simulated brushing technique using three types of toothpastes: conventional (GI), and two with whitening effect (GII and GIII) for a period of 15 days, with 2 brushing sessions per day for 2 minutes each. The final surface rough…
