Numerical investigations of single mode gyrotron equation

2009

A stationary problem with the integral boundary condition arising in the mathematical modelling of a gyrotron is numerically investigated. The Chebyshev's polynomials of the second kind are used as the tool of calculations. The main result with physical meaning is the possibility to determine the maximal value of electrons efficiency. Solving Rate of Change Tasks with a Graphing Calculator: a Case Study on Instrumental Genesis

2016

In an increasing number of mathematics classes throughout the world, technology is being used for the teaching and learning of mathematics. But knowledge is limited about the long-term development of students’ mathematical thinking when learning mathematics with the use of technology. This article reports on the development of a student and the role of the graphing calculator (GC) in his learning about derivatives and instantaneous rate of change. This case is compelling, because the student is an intensive user of the GC and develops flexible problem-solving techniques – techniques which differ from those of his peers and from what he was taught in mathematics class. We used the framework …

Invariant deformation theory of affine schemes with reductive group action

2015

We develop an invariant deformation theory, in a form accessible to practice, for affine schemes $W$ equipped with an action of a reductive algebraic group $G$. Given the defining equations of a $G$-invariant subscheme $X \subset W$, we device an algorithm to compute the universal deformation of $X$ in terms of generators and relations up to a given order. In many situations, our algorithm even computes an algebraization of the universal deformation. As an application, we determine new families of examples of the invariant Hilbert scheme of Alexeev and Brion, where $G$ is a classical group acting on a classical representation, and describe their singularities.

Comparison of implementations of the lattice-Boltzmann method

2008

AbstractSimplicity of coding is usually an appealing feature of the lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM). Conventional implementations of LBM are often based on the two-lattice or the two-step algorithm, which however suffer from high memory consumption and poor computational performance, respectively. The aim of this work was to identify implementations of LBM that would achieve high computational performance with low memory consumption. Effects of memory addressing schemes were investigated in particular. Data layouts for velocity distribution values were also considered, and they were found to be related to computational performance. A novel bundle data layout was therefore introduced. Address…

Non-cooperative power allocation game with imperfect sensing information for cognitive radio

2012

In this paper, we consider a sensing-based spectrum sharing scenario and present an efficient decentralized algorithm to maximize the total throughput of the cognitive radio users by optimizing jointly both the detection operation and the power allocation, taking into account the influence of the sensing accuracy. This optimization problem can be formulated as a distributed non-cooperative power allocation game, which can be solved by using an alternating direction optimization method. The transmit power budget of the cognitive radio users and the constraint related to the rate-loss of the primary user due to the interference are considered in the scheme. Finally, we use variational inequal…

On the application of the generalized means to construct multiresolution schemes satisfying certain inequalities proving stability

2021

Multiresolution representations of data are known to be powerful tools in data analysis and processing, and they are particularly interesting for data compression. In order to obtain a proper definition of the edges, a good option is to use nonlinear reconstructions. These nonlinear reconstruction are the heart of the prediction processes which appear in the definition of the nonlinear subdivision and multiresolution schemes. We define and study some nonlinear reconstructions based on the use of nonlinear means, more in concrete the so-called Generalized means. These means have two interesting properties that will allow us to get associated reconstruction operators adapted to the presence o…

Dynamic Spectrum Reservation for CR Networks in the Presence of Channel Failures: Channel Allocation and Reliability Analysis

2018

[EN] Providing channel access opportunities for new service requests and guaranteeing continuous connections for ongoing flows until service completion are two challenges for service provisioning in wireless networks. Channel failures, which are typically caused by hardware and software failures or/and by intrinsic instability in radio transmissions, can easily result in network performance degradation. In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), secondary transmissions are inherently vulnerable to connection breaks due to licensed users' arrivals as well as channel failures. To explore the advantages of channel reservation on performance improvement in error-prone channels, we propose and analyze …

Economic analysis of PV systems on buildings in Sicilian farms

2013

Abstract The photovoltaic sector in Italy in recent years has experienced a rapid growth also in the primary sector, thanks to substantial incentives guaranteed by energy policies, simultaneous reduction of investment costs and tax benefits. In order to better understand the growth of the PV industry in Italian primary sector, the aim of this paper has been to evaluate the economic convenience of four PV systems on farm buildings located in four different farms of the north-western coast of Sicily and realized during the second and fourth Italian feed-in schemes. For each feed-in scheme it has been considered a PV plant that sells the electricity to the grid and another in which the energy …
