Path integral method for first-passage probability determination of nonlinear systems under levy white noise
2015
In this paper the problem of the first-passage probabilities determination of nonlinear systems under alpha-stable Lévy white noises is addressed. Based on the properties of alpha-stable random variables and processes, the Path Integral method is extended to deal with nonlinear systems driven by Lévy white noises with a generic value of the stability index alpha. Furthermore, the determination of reliability functions and first-passage time probability density functions is handled step-by-step through a modification of the Path Integral technique. Comparison with pertinent Monte Carlo simulation reveals the excellent accuracy of the proposed method.

A thermodynamically consistent nonlocal formulation for damaging materials
2002
A thermodynamically consistent nonlocal formulation for damaging materials is presented. The second principle of thermodynamics is enforced in a nonlocal form over the volume where the dissipative mechanism takes place. The nonlocal forces thermodynamically conjugated are obtained consistently from the free energy. The paper indeed extends to elastic damaging materials a formulation originally proposed by Polizzotto et al. for nonlocal plasticity. Constitutive and computational aspects of the model are discussed. The damage consistency conditions turn out to be formulated as an integral complementarity problem and, consequently, after discretization, as a linear complementarity problem. A n…
Comments on `Nonlocal strain softening bar revisited' by Christer Nilsson: [International Journal of Solids and Structures 34 (1997) 4399-4419]
1999
Nilsson (1997) addressed the analytical solution of an elastic plastic softening bar in extension within the framework of nonlocal plasticity, making use to this purpose of a theory of nonlocal plasticity preliminary devised in the same paper (Section 2). The results there presented - from the thermodynamic arguments supporting the devised theory, to the bar solution - are quite interesting. The writers, involved in the same research area, wish to discuss a few points of the paper in a fully collaborative spirit. We use the same notation as in Nilsson's paper.
Nontraditional configuration of tuned liquid column damper inerter for base-isolated structures
2023
In this paper, the concept of a novel passive control device, namely the Nontraditional Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (NT-TLCDI), is investigated in combination with seismic base isolation (BI), to control lateral displacement demands in base-isolated structures during seismic events. The considered NT-TLCDI is a revision of the ordinary configuration of the recently proposed Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (TLCDI). Unlike the traditional TLCDI layout, which involves a secondary liquid mass in a U-shaped tank coupled with a grounded inerter and connected to the isolation system by a spring-dashpot system, in the NT-TLCDI configuration, the damper is in parallel with the inerter rath…
Self-similarity and response of fractional differential equations under white noise input
2022
Self-similarity, fractal behaviour and long-range dependence are observed in various branches of physical, biological, geological, socioeconomics and mechanical systems. Self-similarity, also termed self-affinity, is a concept that links the properties of a phenomenon at a certain scale with the same properties at different time scales as it happens in fractal geometry. The fractional Brownian motion (fBm), i.e. the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of the Gaussian white noise, is self-similar; in fact by changing the temporal scale t -> at (a > 0), the statistics in the new time axis (at) remain proportional to those calculated in the previous axis (t). The proportionality coeffi…
A mechanical picture of fractional-order Darcy equation
2015
Abstract In this paper the authors show that fractional-order force-flux relations are obtained considering the flux of a viscous fluid across an elastic porous media. Indeed the one-dimensional fluid mass transport in an unbounded porous media with power-law variation of geometrical and physical properties yields a fractional-order relation among the ingoing flux and the applied pressure to the control section. As a power-law decay of the physical properties from the control section is considered, then the flux is related to a Caputo fractional derivative of the pressure of order 0 ⩽ β ≤ 1 . If, instead, the physical properties of the media show a power-law increase from the control sectio…
Computational aspects in 2D SBEM analysis with domain inelastic actions
2009
The Symmetric Boundary Element Method, applied to structures subjected to temperature and inelastic actions, shows singular domain integrals. In the present paper the strong singularity involved in the domain integrals of the stresses and tractions is removed, and by means of a limiting operation, this traction is evaluated on the boundary. First the weakly singular domain integral in the Somigliana Identity (S.I.) of the displacements is regularized and the singular integral is transformed into a boundary one using the Radial Integration Method; subsequently, using the differential operator applied to the displacement field, the S.I. of the tractions inside the body is obtained and through…
Laminar flow through fractal porous materials: the fractional-order transport equation
2015
Abstract The anomalous transport of a viscous fluid across a porous media with power-law scaling of the geometrical features of the pores is dealt with in the paper. It has been shown that, assuming a linear force–flux relation for the motion in a porous solid, then a generalized version of the Hagen–Poiseuille equation has been obtained with the aid of Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative. The order of the derivative is related to the scaling property of the considered media yielding an appropriate mechanical picture for the use of generalized fractional-order relations, as recently used in scientific literature.
On the Stochastic Response of a Fractionally-damped Duffing Oscillator
2012
A numerical method is presented to compute the response of a viscoelastic Duffing oscillator with fractional derivative damping, subjected to a stochastic input. The key idea involves an appropriate discretization of the fractional derivative, based on a preliminary change of variable, that allows to approximate the original system by an equivalent system with additional degrees of freedom, the number of which depends on the discretization of the fractional derivative. Unlike the original system that, due to the presence of the fractional derivative, is governed by non-ordinary differential equations, the equivalent system is governed by ordinary differential equations that can be readily h…
