The preview benefit for familiar and unfamiliar faces

2013

Abstract Previewing distracters improves visual search – the preview benefit ( Watson & Humphreys, 1997 ). Recent fMRI evidence suggests that the preview benefit rests on active inhibition in brain regions concerned with spatial memory, as well as in content selective areas ( Allen, Humphreys, & Matthews, 2008 ). Using familiar and unfamiliar faces in a preview search task we show that search performance is much better with familiar than with unfamiliar faces. With both types of stimuli we obtained preview benefits of at least 10%, measured in terms of the advantage in reaction time relative to the no preview condition. The preview benefit increased up to 30% when distracter faces and their…

Detection and distraction effects for threatening information in social phobia and change after treatment.

2007

This work examines differences in the detection and distraction by social-threatrelated information between a social phobia group (SP; N533) and a normal control group (NC; N532). The change obtained after psychological treatment is also studied for the SP group. A paper-and-pencil visual search task is used, in which the emotional valence of the ‘‘target’’ (social threat, physical threat, and neutral words) and ‘‘distractor’’ (social threat, physical threat, neutral, and nonsense words) verbal stimuli is manipulated. Results indicate that there are no differences in the detection of social-threat targets between SP and NC participants. However, the performance of SP individuals is more imp…

Hemispatial neglect reflected on visual memory

2011

PURPOSE Recent studies of hemispatial neglect have revealed both lateralized and nonlateralized attention mechanisms contributing to the syndrome. In addition, neglect patients show impaired spatial working memory and diminished working memory capacity. The aim of this study was to investigate, how neglect would be reflected in their performances in commonly used clinical visual memory tests. METHODS Twelve patients with right hemisphere lesions and left neglect and twelve matched controls were assessed with the Behavioural Inattention Test, the visual reproduction of the WMS-R, the object memory test, the Rey figure test and the list learning test. Visuo-spatial span was explored with the …

Behavioural adaptations of argulid parasites (Crustacea: Branchiura) to major challenges in their life cycle.

2015

Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. Here we present a review of recent studies on the behaviour of Argulus spp, especially the aggregati…

Search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons at LEP

2006

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of "benchmark" models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. Thes…

Improving Interpolants for Linear Arithmetic

2015

Craig interpolation for satisfiability modulo theory formulas have come more into focus for applications of formal verification. In this paper we, introduce a method to reduce the size of linear constraints used in the description of already computed interpolant in the theory of linear arithmetic with respect to the number of linear constraints. We successfully improve interpolants by combining satisfiability modulo theory and linear programming in a local search heuristic. Our experimental results suggest a lower running time and a larger reduction compared to other methods from the literature.

GRASP with exterior path-relinking and restricted local search for the multidimensional two-way number partitioning problem

2017

In this work, we tackle multidimensional two-way number partitioning (MDTWNP) problem by combining GRASP with Exterior Path Relinking. In the last few years, the combination of GRASP with path relinking (PR) has emerged as a highly effective tool for finding high-quality solutions for several difficult problems in reasonable computational time. However, in most of the cases, this hybridisation is limited to the variant known as interior PR. Here, we couple GRASP with the "exterior form" of path relinking and perform extensive experimentation to evaluate this variant. In addition, we enhance our GRASP with PR method with a novel local search method specially designed for the MDTWNP problem. …

Efficacy and safety of bempedoic acid for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Background Bempedoic acid is a first-in-class lipid-lowering drug recommended by guidelines for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Our objective was to estimate its average effect on plasma lipids in humans and its safety profile. Methods and findings We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of phase II and III randomized controlled trials on bempedoic acid (PROSPERO: CRD42019129687). PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched, with no language restriction, from inception to 5 August 2019. We included 10 RCTs (n = 3,788) comprising 26 arms (active arm [n = 2,460]; control arm [n = 1,328]). Effect sizes for changes in lipids and high-…

Heuristics and meta-heuristics for 2-layer straight line crossing minimization

2003

AbstractThis paper presents extensive computational experiments to compare 12 heuristics and 2 meta-heuristics for the problem of minimizing straight-line crossings in a 2-layer graph. These experiments show that the performance of the heuristics (largely based on simple ordering rules) drastically deteriorates as the graphs become sparser. A tabu search metaheuristic yields the best results for relatively dense graphs, with a GRASP implementation as close second. Furthermore, the GRASP approach outperforms all other approaches when tackling low-density graphs.

orthoFind Facilitates the Discovery of Homologous and Orthologous Proteins

2015

Finding homologous and orthologous protein sequences is often the first step in evolutionary studies, annotation projects, and experiments of functional complementation. Despite all currently available computational tools, there is a requirement for easy-to-use tools that provide functional information. Here, a new web application called orthoFind is presented, which allows a quick search for homologous and orthologous proteins given one or more query sequences, allowing a recurrent and exhaustive search against reference proteomes, and being able to include user databases. It addresses the protein multidomain problem, searching for homologs with the same domain architecture, and gives a si…
