On the use and value of new media and how medical students assess their effectiveness in learning anatomy.

The new media have become widely used tools in medical instruction today. But are they regarded as useful by students training to become medical doctors? What are students' most important criteria for a good CD-ROM or valuable Internet resources? To answer these questions, and to obtain definite data on the use of new media, we distributed a questionnaire to preclinical medical and dental students of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. The evaluation of 397 questionnaires demonstrates that 94.9% of the students use personal computers; 91.6% of the 85.8% who own a computer have access to the Internet. Different Methods of Artificial Intelligence Used for Optimization the Turning Process

In this paper, we realize a comparative study between some heuristics methods applied in turning operation in order to find optimal cutting parameters. We consider five different constraints aimed to achieve minimum total cost of machining. We have chosen the Simulated Annealing (SA) – a local search method, and Weighted-Sum Genetic Algorithm (WSGA) – a non-Pareto approach of a multi-objective optimization algorithm, based on a weighted aggregation of objectives. Systematic reviews of balance control have tended to only focus on the effects of single lower-limb stimulation strategies, and a current limitation is the lack of comparison between different relevant stimulation strategies. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine evidence of effects of different lower-limb sensory stimulation strategies on postural regulation and stability. Previewing distracters enhances the efficiency of visual search. Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that the preview benefit rests on visual marking, a mechanism which actively encodes distracter locations at preview and inhibits them afterwards at search. Due to the growing size and complexity of modern information systems, critical design information is often distributed via multiple diagrams. Fillets:Cues for connections in Focus+Context views of graph-like diagrams

We apply fillets-smoothing of sharp angles at the joints-between the connections and nodes of graph-like diagrams. In situations where the graph layout is constrained, e.g. Focus+Context views or views where the coordinates of the nodes are informative, fillets can clarify the relationships considerably without altering the layout. A visual search experiment supports our hypothesis that with fillets it is considerably easier to perceive node-connection structures. We discuss algorithms with different tradeoffs for flexibility and performance for rendering these connections in a single pass using OpenGL.

The search items were demonstrated on the volumetric display and flat panel display. In contrast to the correct response rate, the search time and number of interactions were considerably affected by the type of visualization.

There is ample evidence that the visual attention and perception is substantially impaired in the presence of mental fatigue. The question is how visual grouping, which can be considered a bottom-up controlled neuronal gain mechanism, is influenced. Visual search in three-dimensional non-medical images: visual-motor performance of radiologists

The visual search abilities of radiologists are systematically trained due to the specifics of their professional tasks. We investigated whether the visual-motor performance of radiologists, residents and students varied when searching non-medical targets on the volumetric display. As a result, no significant differences were found in the correct response rate among three groups. However, the total number of interactions was considerably higher for the resident radiologists and medical students comparing to the experienced radiologists. Effective field theory search for high-energy nuclear recoils using the XENON100 dark matter detector

International audience; We report on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results in the XENON100 detector using a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach. The data from science run II (34  kg×224.6 live days) were reanalyzed, with an increased recoil energy interval compared to previous analyses, ranging from (6.6–240)  keVnr. The data are found to be compatible with the background-only hypothesis. We present 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling constants of WIMP-nucleon effective operators using a binned profile likelihood method.
