Using historical school book excerpts for the education of mature mathematics teachers
2015
International audience; The use of historical and cultural perspectives in university mathematics education can support the development of self-esteem and maturity. It can bring together students with similar interests. We present the concept of a seminar on the analysis of mathematical textbooks and of learning contexts based on the consideration of historical excerpts. Such a seminar can become a starting point for a community of practice with the potential to develop social recognition and personal appreciation of the individual interests and talents of its members and their joint activities.
Risk Factors, Lifestyle and Prevention among Adolescents with Idiopathic Juvenile Scoliosis: A Cross Sectional Study in Eleven First-Grade Secondary …
2021
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has an incidence of 2–3% in the general population and a multifactorial etiology. The present study aims to analyze modifiable risk factors and their interactions in the development of AIS in order to increase knowledge about the disease and to prevent the evolution of AIS in young students with tailored public health strategies. A cross-sectional study was conducted over two consecutive school years among students attending 11 first-grade secondary schools in the province of Palermo, Italy. A self-administered questionnaire that investigated socio-demographical, physical and anamnestic characteristics and habits, focusing on possible risk factors…
The role of mothers' beliefs in students' self-concept of ability development
2018
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the child-related competence beliefs of mothers are associated with the development of Finnish adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability during their transition from primary to lower secondary school and whether these associations depend on adolescents' level of performance. The results showed that, first, adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability decreased over time. The impact of maternal beliefs on the linear trend of the self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability was dependent on the level of students' performance. Mothers' high beliefs buffered against the decrease in adolescents' self-concep…
Trajectory subgroups of perceived emotional support from teachers : Associations with change in mastery climate and intentions to quit upper secondar…
2022
The aims of this three-wave longitudinal study were to identify and describe trajectories of perceived emotional support from teachers and investigate whether these trajectories were related to the development of intentions to quit upper secondary school via change in perceived mastery climate. Among 1379 Norwegian upper secondary school students, three trajectory subgroups were identified: stable high (84.9%), decreasing (7.8%), and low increasing (7.3%). The subgroups differed in levels of achievement ambition and academic self-concept. Further, a parallel process latent growth curve model revealed essential associations with change in intentions to quit school. Specifically, students wit…
Student Athletes’ Causal Attributions for Sport and School Achievement in Relation to Sport Dropout and Grade Point Average
2023
The present study longitudinally examined stability and change in the attributional profiles of Finnish student athletes (n = 391) in upper secondary sport schools. Moreover, it examined the extent to which these profiles, and changes in them, were associated with athletes’ level of sport competition and school achievements and dropouts at the end of upper secondary sport school. Using latent profile analysis, five different and highly stable attributional profiles were identified for student athletes: (a) depressive (6.9%), (b) athletic self-serving (23.0%), (c) average (16.4%), (d) learned helplessness (30.9%), and (e) responsible (22.8%). The results further showed that over the 3-year s…
Koulumenestyjät: tutkimus laudaturylioppilaiden koulutus- ja työurista
2002
Millaisista lähtökohdista tulevat koulumenestyjät ja miten he sijoittuvat työelämään? Mikä merkitys hyvällä koulumenestyksellä on huippuoppilaiden elämässä ollut? Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen tarkoituksena on etsiä vastauksia edellä mainittuihin kysymyksiin. Toisessa osiossa koulumenestyjien elämänvaiheita seurataan kuuden laudaturin ylioppilaiden kirjoittamien tarinoiden avulla. Kertomukset tuovat esiin sen, kuinka yhdenmukaisten tila…
Lukiomenestyksen ja yliopisto-opintojen aloitushetken iän yhteys yliopisto-opinnoissa menestymiseen ja opintojen etenemiseen : seurantatutkimus
2018
Student Engagement and School Burnout in Finnish Lower-Secondary Schools: Latent Profile Analysis
2016
Self-ratings of behavioural engagement, cognitive engagement and school burnout were used in person-centred analyses to identify latent profiles among 2,485 Finnish lower-secondary school students. Three profiles were identified: high-engagement/low-burnout (40.6% of the sample), average-engagement/average-burnout (53.9%), and low-engagement/high-burnout (5.5%). Another sample of lower-secondary school students was used to validate the 3 profiles. The factors most strongly associated with the high-engagement/low-burnout profile of lower-secondary school students’ were high levels of support from teachers and family, good academic performance, and lack of truancy. The study indicated that te…

2020
This mixed-method study examines students' expectations and concerns before transitioning from primary to lower secondary school and the role of students' school-related wellbeing and self-esteem in their concerns.
