Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in People With Active Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis

2023

Background and ObjectivesUncontrolled evidence suggests that autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) can be effective in people with active secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). In this study, we compared the effect of AHSCT with that of other anti-inflammatory disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) on long-term disability worsening in active SPMS.MethodsWe collected data from the Italian Bone Marrow Transplantation Study Group and the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Register. Patients were considered eligible if treatment had been started after the diagnosis of SPMS. Disability worsening was assessed by the cumulative proportion of patients with a 6-month confirmed dis…

Long-term efficacy of hepatitis B vaccine, booster policy, and impact of hepatitis B virus mutants

2005

The long-term efficacy of hepatitis B vaccine, long-term effectiveness of hepatitis B immunisation programmes, immune memory induced by hepatitis B vaccine, current booster policies, and impact of hepatitis B virus mutants on immunisation programmes were reviewed at the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board (VHPB) meeting in Sevilla, Spain, March 2004. The main focus was on universal vaccination programmes with data being presented from Italy, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, The Gambia, and USA (Alaska).

Mutational analysis of the cysteine residues in the hepatitis B virus small envelope protein.

1993

The small envelope protein of hepatitis B virus is the major component of the viral coat and is also secreted from cells as a 20-nm subviral particle, even in the absence of other viral proteins. Such empty envelope particles are composed of approximately 100 copies of this polypeptide and host-derived lipids and are stabilized by extensive intermolecular disulfide cross-linking. To study the contribution of disulfide bonds to assembly and secretion of the viral envelope, single and multiple mutants involving all 14 cysteines in HepG2 and COS-7 cells were analyzed. Of the six cysteines located outside the region carrying the surface antigen, Cys-48, Cys-65, and Cys-69 were each found to be …

Universal formulas for characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

2007

This article can be seen as a sequel to the first author's article ``Chern classes of the tangent bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane'', where he calculates the total Chern class of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane by proving a result on the existence of certain universal formulas expressing characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes in term of Nakajima's creation operators. The purpose of this work is (at least) two-fold. First of all, we clarify the notion of ``universality'' of certain formulas about the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes by defining a universal algebra of creation operators. This helps us to reformulate and extend a lot of the f…

Administración liberal y corrupción política: el conflicto del Real Colegio de San Pablo con el Instituto Provincial de Valencia

2015

The present paper examines the Spanish public schools inside the liberal educative system doing a detailed analysis of the Real Colegio de San Pablo of Valencia. The article studies this Real Colegio in order to point out the conflict provoked by political corruption, since Juan Bravo Murillo, a Spanish minister, appointed relatives to direction posts against the desires of Antonio Gil de Zárate, the founder of the Spanish liberal educative system. In this case, the struggle between personal interest of politicians and the necessities of the new and modern administration were related to the problematic issue of the model of high schools established by the State: elitist public schools or op…

COLLARD GREEN (BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. ACEPHALA) CULTIVATION IN SICILY

2013

Collard greens (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) are a group of plants cultivated for its thick, slightly bitter, edible leaves. As other Brassicaceae, have a good nutritional value as they are a good sources of vitamin C and soluble fiber, and contain various compounds with potent anticancer properties. In order to enhance collard cultivation in Sicily, different planting dates were tested. The research was carried out during 2009-2010 in the experimental field of SAgA Department – University of Palermo. Plants of a Sicilian local cultivar, with high vigor, good emission of side shoots, large and moderately curly leaves and long and strong petiole, were planted in three different periods: …

Extremely rapid acclimation of Escherichia coli to high temperature over a few generations of a fed-batch culture during slow warming

2014

This study aimed to demonstrate that adequate slow heating rate allows two strains of Escherichia coli rapid acclimation to higher temperature than upper growth and survival limits known to be strain-dependent. A laboratory (K12-TG1) and an environmental (DPD3084) strain of E. coli were subjected to rapid (few seconds) or slow warming (1 degrees C 12 h(-1)) in order to (re) evaluate upper survival and growth limits. The slow warming was applied from the ancestral temperature 37 degrees C to total cell death 46-54 degrees C: about 30 generations were propagated. Upper survival and growth limits for rapid warming (46 degrees C) were lower than for slow warming (46-54 degrees C). The thermal l…

Amino acid substitutions enhancing thermostability of Bacillus polymyxa beta-glucosidase A

1996

Mutations enhancing the thermostability of β-glucosidase A of Bacillus polymyxa, a family 1 glycosyl hydrolase, have been obtained after hydroxylamine mutagenesis of a plasmid containing the bglA gene, transformation of Escherichia coli with the mutagenized plasmid, and identification of transformant colonies that showed β-glucosidase activity after a thermal treatment that inactivated the wild-type enzyme. Two additive mutations have been characterized that cause replacement of glutamate at position 96 by lysine and of methionine at position 416 by isoleucine respectively. The thermoresistant mutant enzymes showed increased resistance to other denaturing agents, such as pH and urea, while …

Primary Structure of Selected Archaeal Mesophilic and Extremely Thermophilic Outer Surface Layer Proteins

2002

The archaea are recognized as a separate third domain of life together with the bacteria and eucarya. The archaea include the methanogens, extreme halophiles, thermoplasmas, Sulfate reducers and Sulfur metabolizing thermophiles, which thrive in different habitats such as anaerobic niches, salt lakes, and marine hydrothermals systems and continental solfataras. Many of these habitats represent extreme environments in respect to temperature, osmotic pressure and pH-values and remind on the conditions of the early earth. The cell envelope structures were one of the first biochemical characteristics of archaea studied in detail. The most common archaeal cell envelope is composed of a single cry…

Effect of Vegetation on Fluvial Erosion Processes: Experimental Analysis in a Laboratory Flume

2013

Abstract The plane evolution of a meander wave is determined by the erosion processes at the banks. Particularly, the outer- bank is considerably vulnerable to the erosion processes. Indirect techniques, which act upon the reduction of the effect of the cross-circulation motion, have been recently proposed to limit the outer-bank erosion. This paper shows preliminary results on the role played by vegetation on cross-circulation motion. The analysis is conducted on the basis of experimental data collected in a large amplitude meandering channel constructed at the hydraulic laboratory of DICAM. Maps describing the cross-stream flow, both over the no-vegetated bed and over the vegetated bed, a…
