Channeled scaffolds implanted in adult rat brain.

2012

Scaffolds with aligned channels based on acrylate copolymers, which had previously demonstrated good com- patibility with neural progenitor cells were studied as coloniz- able structures both in vitro with neural progenitor cells and in vivo, implanted without cells in two different locations, in the cortical plate of adult rat brains and close to the subven- tricular zone. In vitro, neuroprogenitors colonize the scaffold and differentiate into neurons and glia within its channels. When implanted in vivo immunohistochemical analysis by confocal microscopy for neural and endothelial cells markers demonstrated that the scaffolds maintained continuity with the surrounding neural tissue and wer…

Inhibitory Activity and Chemical Characterization ofDaucus carotasubsp.maximusEssential Oils

2017

The essential oils (EOs) of green seeds from Daucus carota subsp. maximus growing wild in Pantelleria Island (Sicily, Italy) were characterized. EOs were extracted by steam distillation, examined for their inhibitory properties against food-borne Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and analyzed for the chemical composition by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Undiluted EOs showed a large inhibition spectrum against Gram-positive strains and also vs. Acinetobacter spp. and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) was in the range 1.25 – 2.50 μl/ml for the most sensitive strains. The chemical analysis indicated that D. carota subsp…

The effects of benzyladenine and meta-Topolin on in vitro sprouting and regrowth after encapsulation of C35 citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Pon…

2016

C35, a hybrid of ‘Ruby Blood’ sweet orange and trifoliate orange, is a promising Citrus rootstock, mainly due to its resistance to Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV), one of the most serious pathology affecting citriculture. The use of resistant rootstocks, such as citranges, is an efficient tool to fight this plant disease. This implies a continuous increasing demand of resistant rootstocks, in order to carry out the turnover of sour orange, still the most used Citrus rootstock in Italy. Micropropagation, can provide innovative solutions to obtain, in a short time and in a small space, a number of plants higher than traditional propagation. Micropropagation efficiency is also affected by the cult…

USE OF IN VITRO TISSUE CULTURE IN PROPAGATION AND GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF FRUIT TREES

2020

Aloe-Based Edible Coating to Maintain Quality of Fresh-Cut Italian Pears (Pyrus communis L.) during Cold Storage

2021

Pear fruits are known for their antioxidant and nutritional characteristics. However, they are very susceptible to rapid decay. Edible coating (EC) represents a good strategy to maintain postharvest quality. The effects of two EC in slowing down the senescence processes in fresh-cut ‘Coscia’ pears were investigated: EC1 (A. vera gel, hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose and pomegranate seeds oil (PSO), EC2 (A. vera gel and hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose). Weight loss, firmness and colour decrease more slowly in both EC-treated than in untreated (CTR) slices; soluble solid content increases faster in CTR, indicating a faster ripening process. The specific investigation of undesired microorganisms di…

Functional Redundancy and Complementarities of Seed Dispersal by the Last Neotropical Megafrugivores

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013-02-07 Background: Functional redundancy has been debated largely in ecology and conservation, yet we lack detailed empirical studies on the roles of functionally similar species in ecosystem function. Large bodied frugivores may disperse similar plant species and have strong impact on plant recruitment in tropical forests. Th…

Modifications over time of volatile compounds in coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)

2007

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an annual strongly-smelling herb belonging to the family Apiaceae, which is cultivated all over the world for its aromatic fruits (“seeds”) and, in many Asiatic and South American countries, for its green leaves. The aromatic features of leaves and fruits are sharply different, and the strong smell coming from leaves (many times referred to as a “bug” scent) is not always pleasant to many consumers from western countries. In our work, one Coriander small-seeded biotype has been grown in plastic covered greenhouses, and at given time intervals samples of leaves, flowers and fruits have been analyzed by means of HS-SPME and GC-MS to study the evolution ove…
