Incomplete self-similarity and flow velocity in gravel bed channels

2000

Velocity measurements, previously carried out using both a miniature current flowmeter and an acoustic Doppler velocimeter, are used to verify the applicability of the incomplete self-similarity theory to deduce the velocity profile in a gravel bed channel. Then, for the velocity profiles having the maximum value below the free surface and for the S-shaped profiles, the power velocity distribution is corrected using a new divergence function. For each value of the depth sediment ratio the nondimensional friction factor parameter is calculated by integration of the measured velocity distributions in the different verticals of the cross section. Finally, a semilogarithmic flow resistance equa…

Semantics bias in cross-national comparative analyses : Is it good or bad to have "fair" health?

2016

The Health Behavior in School-aged Children is a cross-national study collecting data on social and health indicators on adolescents in 43 countries. The study provides comparable data on health behaviors and health outcomes through the use of a common protocol, which have been a back bone of the study sine its initiation in 1983. Recent years, researchers within the study have noticed a questionable comparability on the widely used item on self-rated health. One of the four response categories to the item “Would you say your health is….?” showed particular variation, as the response category “Fair” varied from 20 % in Latvia and Moldova to 3–4 % in Bulgaria and Macedonia. A qualitative min…

Generating dialogical practices in mental health: experiences from southern norway, 1998-2008.

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10488-013-0479-3 In Norway and many other countries, political guidelines prescribe the development of mental health strategies with both a service user's perspective and a treatment system established by the local authority. The development of new strategies frequently involves challenges regarding procedures and treatment as well as a view of knowledge and humanity. Dialogical practices might provide a solution for these challenges not only because of its procedures but also due to its attitudes tow…

Mens sana in corpore exhausto. Emociones y gestión de sí en escuelas secundarias del sur global

2020

In recent years, emotional education has become a central element in a series of guidelines on a global scale that have been translated into various state initiatives aimed at education. Thus, Mens sana in corpore exhausto proposes to demonstrate the tension that is expressed between the growing series of discourses on emotional education and the school climate and the exhaustive bodies of teachers and directors of public secondary schools in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (RMBA). By way of hypothesis, these policies are considered to work on the bodies of teachers and directors, encouraging them to continue and not stop under the logic of management and self-management that throw …

Decolonizing Othello in search of black feminist North American identities: Djanet Sears' Harlem duet and Toni Morrison's Desdemona

2017

The plays Harlem duet (1997) by African Canadian playwright Djanet Sears and Desdemona (2012) by Toni Morrison signify upon European texts aiming to carve out a new definition of what it means to be black in North America. Therefore both texts make for interesting reading in the study of (black) identity construction within US and Canadian contexts for, by revising Shakespeare’s Othello, they rethink and rewrite a social and racial reality unrelentingly disrupted by difference and hybridity. Sears’ play establishes a specific reading of Canadianness in dialogue with African America to erect a possibility of healing and …

Weaving the threads of international criminal justice: The double dialogicity of law and politics in the ICC al-Mahdi case

2021

International audience; In this paper, we examine the international criminal trial of Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi, a Malian Islamist who appeared before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, charged with the destruction of Islamic shrines during the 2012 jihadist occupation of Timbuktu. Our objective is to analyze the so-called 'al-Mahdi case' as a dialogical network (the destructions occurred in the context of an asynchronous translocal press-mediated exchange between jihadists and the international community) and as an event unfolding at a dialogical site (when the commander responsible for the destructions was referred to the ICC four years later). These two dialogical orders e…

Nanowire iron(III) coordination polymer based on 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine and chloride ligands

2019

Abstract The neutral ligand 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (tp) has been employed to prepare a new coordination compound of Fe(III), [FeCl3(tp)2]n (1). Compound 1 was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction and found to be a coordination polymer forming a ladder structure based on metal–ligand interactions, while H-bonding and aromatic interactions contribute to the supramolecular self-assembly into a 3D nanostructured material. The polymeric assembly is retained also in solution, where a metallo-supramolecular polymer based on coordinative metal–ligand binding is present, as shown by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The redox properties of the Fe(III) coordination pol…

PHARMACOLOGICAL MODULATION OF OPERANT BEHAVIOUR FOR ACETALDEHYDE. INVOLVEMENT OF D2 AND CB1 RECEPTORS.

2013

Acetaldehyde (ACD), the first metabolite of ethanol, has rewarding and motivational properties, as shown by behavioural studies specifically tailored for studying addictive-like behaviour (1, 2). The rewarding and incentive effects of alcohol and others addictive substances, result from their capability to enhance mesolimbic dopamine (DA) transmission, as well as to affect the cannabinoid system, which is able to fine-tune the activity of DA neurons (3). ACD directly increases DA neurotransmission (4), but the neural underpinning the operant behaviour for oral-self administered ACD still remains poorly understood. Since D2 and CB1 receptors are involved in alcohol addiction (3), as well as …

Molecular devices for nanoelectronics and plasmonics

2009

This thesis is focused on fabrication and characterization of molecular devices. In connection with molecular electronics the dielectrophoresis based method for trapping and attaching nanoscale double-stranded DNA between nanoelectrodes was developed. Moreover, the method was extended to self-assembled DNA nanostructures. The method allowed to obtain valuable information about electrical and dielectrophoretic properties of DNA. In addition, two general approaches to the utilization of DNA origami structures for the assembly of materials are described and experimentally demonstrated. In context of molecular plasmonics, a novel lithographic fabrication method for positioning dye molecules on …
