Thermal infrared radiance model for interpreting the directional radiometric temperature of a vegetative surface

Abstract In this work we have proposed a two-dimensional radiance model that serves for interpreting the directional remotely-sensed thermal infrared data obtained over a vegetative surface when the effects of the shadows are minimal. The model was validated for different view angles from the measurements made with a radiometer placed on board a helicopter in two different citrus regions. And the root-mean-square deviation between the model predictions and the sensor measurements was 0.3°C.

Land surface emissivity retrieval from satellite data

As an intrinsic property of natural materials, land surface emissivity LSE is an important surface parameter and can be derived from the emitted radiance measured from space. Besides radiometric calibration and cloud detection, two main problems need to be resolved to obtain LSE values from space measurements. Forest fires affect the natural cycle of the vegetation, and the structure and functioning of ecosystems. As a consequence of defoliation and vegetation mortality, surface energy flux patterns can suffer variations. Remote sensing techniques together with surface energy balance modeling offer the opportunity to explore these changes. In this paper we focus on a Mediterranean forest ecosystem. A fire event occurred in 2001 in Almodovar del Pinar (Spain) affecting a pine and shrub area. Reservoirs have been subject to anthropogenic stressors, becoming increasingly degraded. The evaluation of ecological potential in reservoirs is remarkably challenging, and consistent and regular monitoring using the traditional in situ methods defined in the WFD is often time- and money-consuming. A number of energy balance models of variable complexity that use remotely sensed boundary conditions for producing spatially distributed maps of surface fluxes have been proposed. Relationship between vegetation microwave optical depth and cross-polarized backscatter from multiyear Aquarius observations

Soil moisture retrieval algorithms based on passive microwave remote sensing observations need to account for vegetation attenuation and emission, which is generally parameterized as vegetation optical depth (VOD). This multisensor study tests a new method to retrieve VOD from cross-polarized radar backscattering coefficients. Three years of Aquarius/SAC-D data were used to establish a relationship between the cross-polarized backscattering coefficient σ HV and VOD derived from a multitemporal passive dual-channel algorithm (VODMT). This paper evaluates the retrieval of soil moisture in the top 5-cm layer at 3-km spatial resolution using L-band dual-copolarized Soil Moisture Active–Passive (SMAP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that mapped the globe every three days from mid-April to early July, 2015. Surface soil moisture retrievals using radar observations have been challenging in the past due to complicating factors of surface roughness and vegetation scattering. Sustainability of modern agro-hydrology requires the knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of vegetation biomass to optimize management of land and water resources.
