About the reliability of the Maximum Entropy Method in reconstructing electron density: the case of MgO
2006
Abstract The reliability of the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) to reconstruct finite temperature electron density (ED) is here discussed, investigating the case of periclase (MgO). A theoretical electron density has been generated by quantum mechanic calculations and folded with a function simulating atomic thermal motion, in order to produce a reference errorless ED [ρ(r)REF]. The Fourier coefficients of ρ(r)REF have been calculated, and used as “observed” diffraction intensities to reconstruct via MEM the original ED. The electron density attained by MEM [ρ(r)MEM] and ρ(r)REF have been compared with each other (pixel-by-pixel and critical points) to assess the ability of MEM to retrieve EDs…
Combinatorial aspects of L-convex polyominoes
2007
We consider the class of L-convex polyominoes, i.e. those polyominoes in which any two cells can be connected with an ''L'' shaped path in one of its four cyclic orientations. The paper proves bijectively that the number f"n of L-convex polyominoes with perimeter 2(n+2) satisfies the linear recurrence relation f"n"+"2=4f"n"+"1-2f"n, by first establishing a recurrence of the same form for the cardinality of the ''2-compositions'' of a natural number n, a simple generalization of the ordinary compositions of n. Then, such 2-compositions are studied and bijectively related to certain words of a regular language over four letters which is in turn bijectively related to L-convex polyominoes. In …
Verbal sets and cyclic coverings
2010
Abstract We consider groups G such that the set of all values of a fixed word w in G is covered by a finite set of cyclic subgroups. Fernandez-Alcober and Shumyatsky studied such groups in the case when w is the word [ x 1 , x 2 ] , and proved that in this case the corresponding verbal subgroup G ′ is either cyclic or finite. Answering a question asked by them, we show that this is far from being the general rule. However, we prove a weaker form of their result in the case when w is either a lower commutator word or a non-commutator word, showing that in the given hypothesis the verbal subgroup w ( G ) must be finite-by-cyclic. Even this weaker conclusion is not universally valid: it fails …
Dirichlet Forms, Poincaré Inequalities, and the Sobolev Spaces of Korevaar and Schoen
2004
We answer a question of Jost on the validity of Poincare inequalities for metric space-valued functions in a Dirichlet domain. We also investigate the relationship between Dirichlet domains and the Sobolev-type spaces introduced by Korevaar and Schoen.
Graded polynomial identities and codimensions: Computing the exponential growth
2010
Abstract Let G be a finite abelian group and A a G-graded algebra over a field of characteristic zero. This paper is devoted to a quantitative study of the graded polynomial identities satisfied by A. We study the asymptotic behavior of c n G ( A ) , n = 1 , 2 , … , the sequence of graded codimensions of A and we prove that if A satisfies an ordinary polynomial identity, lim n → ∞ c n G ( A ) n exists and is an integer. We give an explicit way of computing such integer by proving that it equals the dimension of a suitable finite dimension semisimple G × Z 2 -graded algebra related to A.
Graded algebras with polynomial growth of their codimensions
2015
Abstract Let A be an algebra over a field of characteristic 0 and assume A is graded by a finite group G . We study combinatorial and asymptotic properties of the G -graded polynomial identities of A provided A is of polynomial growth of the sequence of its graded codimensions. Roughly speaking this means that the ideal of graded identities is “very large”. We relate the polynomial growth of the codimensions to the module structure of the multilinear elements in the relatively free G -graded algebra in the variety generated by A . We describe the irreducible modules that can appear in the decomposition, we show that their multiplicities are eventually constant depending on the shape obtaine…

On a Class of Generalized Nilpotent Groups
2002
AbstractWe explore the class B of generalized nilpotent groups in the universe c[formula] of all radical locally finite groups satisfying min-p for every prime p. We obtain that this class is the natural generalization of the class of finite nilpotent groups from the finite universe to the universe c[formula]. Moreover, the structure of B-groups is determined explicitly. It is also shown that B is a subgroup-closed c[formula]-formation and that in every c[formula]-group the Fitting subgroup is the unique maximal normal B-subgroup.
Nilpotent Lie algebras with 2-dimensional commutator ideals
2011
Abstract We classify all (finitely dimensional) nilpotent Lie k -algebras h with 2-dimensional commutator ideals h ′ , extending a known result to the case where h ′ is non-central and k is an arbitrary field. It turns out that, while the structure of h depends on the field k if h ′ is central, it is independent of k if h ′ is non-central and is uniquely determined by the dimension of h . In the case where k is algebraically or real closed, we also list all nilpotent Lie k -algebras h with 2-dimensional central commutator ideals h ′ and dim k h ⩽ 11 .
