In vitro evaluation of the biocompatibility of contaminated implant surfaces treated with an Er : YAG laser and an air powder system
2004
Abstract: Titanium platelets with a sand-blasted and acid-etched surface were coated with bovine serum albumin and incubated with a suspension of Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC 33277). Four groups with a total of 48 specimens were formed. Laser irradiation of the specimens (n=12) was performed on a computer-controlled XY translation stage at pulse energy 60 mJ and frequency 10 pps. Twelve specimens were treated with an air powder system. After the respective treatment, human gingival fibroblasts were incubated on the specimens. The proliferation rate was determined by means of fluorescence activity of a redox indicator (Alamar Blue® Assay) which is reduced by metabolic activity related to c…

Appropriateness of requests for human serum albumin at the University Hospital of Palermo, Italy: a prospective study
2015
Abstract OBJECTIVE: First, to assess the appropriateness of requests for albumin using current guidelines; second, to evaluate physicians' compliance with this protocol. DESIGN: Descriptive, prospective study. SETTING: 'Paolo Giaccone' University Hospital in Palermo (Italy). PARTICIPANTS: The six departments with the highest orders for albumin. INTERVENTION: An experimental, pharmacist-driven process for daily orders of albumin was activated over a period of 1 month. Pharmacy personnel handed out order forms on six different wards. Physicians were required to select one of a number of intended uses listed on the form. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Data on albumin and serum protein levels; number o…
Plasma polymer films and gold nanoparticles: coupling of properties to design a biosensor
The present investigation deals with the functionalization of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with primary amine-based plasma polymer films (NH2-PPF), to improve their properties for bioanalytical applications. Cyclopropylamine (CPA) plasma polymerization, in pulsed and continuous wave radio frequency discharges, was employed to growth CPA amino-based PPFs coatings (18 nm) onto Au NPs of 12 nm of diameter deposited on glass and silicon substrates. A multi-technique investigation, based on FT-IR and XPS spectroscopies, AFM and SEM microscopies and Tof-SIMS spectrometry, revealed peculiar features of the CPA PPFs. In particular, by FT-IR it was possible to obtain an overview about the rich chemis…
Compared Binding Properties between Resveratrol and Other Polyphenols to Plasmatic Albumin: Consequences for the Health Protecting Effect of Dietary …
2014
International audience; Phytophenols are considered to have beneficial effects towards human physiology. They are food microcomponents with potent chemopreventive properties towards the most three frequent contemporary human diseases, e.g., cardiovascular alterations, cancer and neurodegenerative pathologies. Related to this, the plasmatic form and plasmatic level of plant polyphenols in the body circulation are crucial for their efficiency. Thus, determinations of the binding process of resveratrol and of common flavonoids produced by major edible plants, berries and fruits to plasma proteins are essential. The interactions between resveratrol and albumin, a major plasma protein, were comp…
