Effects of a Home-Based Physical Rehabilitation Program on Physical Disability After Hip Fracture: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2015

Abstract Objective Fewer than half of the patients with hip fracture will regain the prefracture level of physical functioning. This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of a multicomponent home-based rehabilitation program (ProMo) on physical disability after hip fracture. Design Randomized, controlled, parallel-group trial. Setting Rehabilitation in participants' homes; measurements in university-based laboratory and local hospital. Participants Population-based clinical sample of community-dwelling people older than 60 years (n = 81) operated for hip fracture were randomized into intervention and control groups. Intervention The year-long intervent…

Plasma myeloperoxidase levels in acute brain ischaemia and high grade carotid stenosis.

2020

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an important oxidative enzyme participating in different stages of cardiovascular disease and predicts prognosis. Little is known about its role in acute cerebrovascular events and carotid plaque vulnerability. In this study, the aim was to assess plasma MPO levels in acute stroke patients and their correlation to stroke severity and stroke outcome.Plasma MPO levels were assessed in patients presenting with acute brain ischaemia within 36 h of symptom onset (n = 144, mean age 64.7 ± 11.6 years, 67% men) and in patients with moderate-to-severe carotid stenosis undergoing carotid artery stenting (n = 51, mean age 66.3 ± 8.4 years, 75% men). Patients presenting with ac…

Time processing in children with Tourette's syndrome.

2010

Background: Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by dysfunctional connectivity between prefrontal cortex and sub-cortical structures, and altered meso-cortical and/or meso-striatal dopamine release. Since time processing is also regulated by fronto-striatal circuits and modulated by dopaminergic transmission, we hypothesized that time processing is abnormal in TS. Methods: We compared time processing abilities between nine children with TS-only (i.e. without major psychiatric comorbidities) and 10 age-matched healthy children, employing a time reproduction task in which subjects actively reproduce different temporal intervals, and a time comparison task in which subjects judge whether a …

Renal Impairment Is Associated with Intracerebral Hemorrhage after Mechanical Thrombectomy in Vertebrobasilar Stroke

2018

Background and Purpose: Renal dysfunction (RD) is overall associated with unfavorable functional outcome and higher risk of mortality after acute ischemic stroke. Associations between RD and outcome in patients with acute vertebrobasilar stroke treated with thrombectomy have not been evaluated so far. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients with vertebrobasilar stroke treated with mechanical thrombectomy between October 2010 and July 2017 at our center were analyzed. RD was defined as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at admission. Endpoints were (I) poor clinic…

Cumulative incidence of achilles tendon rupture and tendinopathy in male former elite athletes

2005

To study the cumulative incidence of Achilles tendon rupture and tendinopathy among former top-level athletes.Historical cohort study.Finland.Male former elite athlete cohort members (n = 785; median age, 69 years when responding to the questionnaire; range, 54-97) and their matched controls (n = 416; median age, 68 years; range, 56-94).Questionnaire-reported Achilles tendinopathy and tendon rupture diagnosed by physicians before the age of 45 years and within the subjects' lifetimes.Cumulative incidence of Achilles tendinopathy before the age of 45 was high for middle and long-distance runners (adjusted odds ratio, 31.2 compared with controls; P0.001), and cumulative incidence of Achilles …

Vitamin D and cutaneous lupus erythematosus: effect of vitamin D replacement on disease severity.

2014

Background The main vitamin D source is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which aggravates cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Objectives The aims of this study were to identify variables associated with lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels in CLE patients and assess the effect of vitamin D restoration on disease severity. Methods Vitamin D status in 60 CLE patients and 117 apparently healthy subjects was compared. We recommended oral vitamin D3 to 27 CLE patients. After one year of treatment, changes in disease severity were assessed and compared to 25 untreated CLE patients. Disease severity was measured by the Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus Disease Area and Severity Index (C…

Acute injuries in Finnish junior floorball league players

2018

Abstract Objectives To investigate the incidence and characteristics of acute time-loss injuries in Finnish junior floorball league players. Design Prospective cohort study with 3-year follow-up. Methods One hundred and eighty-six female and male players (mean age 16.6 ± 1.4) took part in the follow-up study (2011–2014). The training hours and games were recorded on a team diary. Floorball related acute injuries were registered and verified by a research physician. The injury incidence was expressed as the number of injuries per 1000 h of exposure. Incidence rate was calculated separately for games and practices, and for males and females. Results One hundred and forty-four acute time-loss …

Efficacy of switching between tumor necrosis factor-alfa inhibitors in psoriasis: results from the Italian Psocare registry

2014

Background: Some studies have shown that switching patients from one tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alfa inhibitor to another may be beneficial when they have an inadequate response or an adverse event. Objective: We sought to assess the variables predicting the efficacy of the second TNF-alfa inhibitor in patients discontinuing the first TNF-alfa inhibitor. Methods: Data from all 5423 consecutive patients starting TNF-alfa inhibitor therapy for psoriasis between September 2005 and September 2010 who were included in the Italian Psocare registry were analyzed. Results: In 105 patients who switched to a second TNF-alfa inhibitor who had complete follow-up data, 75% improvement in the Psoriasis …
