Recensione a BART HUELSENBECK, Figures in the Shadows. The Speech of Two Augustan-Age Declaimers, Arellius Fuscus and Papirius Fabianus, Berlin-Bosto…
2022
Review of the volume that is configured as an essay on the declamatory phenomenon as a whole, but above all as a reading entirely internal to the first corpus of declamatory texts by Seneca il Vecchio that has come down to us
The shadow economy in Portugal: An analysis with the MIMIC approach
2007
The paper estimates the Portuguese Shadow Economy (SE) from 1977 to 2004 and tests the statistical relationships between the SE and other economic variables. In order to carry out the econometric analysis, a multiple indicators multiple causes (MIMIC) model with means and intercepts is applied. The main causes of the Portuguese SE are analyzed and economic policies to reduce it are suggested. An appraisal on the reliability of estimates and an alternative benchmark strategy for the MIMIC approach are proposed.
On vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels as measured by digital image analysis
2012
In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is employed to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled tanks stirred by either a D=T/3 Lightnin A310 or a D=T/3 Rushton turbine. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex images over time. Data obtained show that the two different impellers give rise to quite different vortex shapes. A novel 2-parameter model is proposed that successfully describes vortex shapes obtained with both impellers.
Photoproduction of light vector mesons in Xe–Xe ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC and the nuclear density of Xe-129
2018
We make predictions for cross sections of $\rho$ and $\phi$ vector meson photoproduction in ultraperipheral Xe-Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.44$ TeV. Analyzing the momentum transfer distribution of $\rho$ mesons in this process, we explore the feasibility of extracting the nuclear density of $^{129}$Xe, which is needed in searches for dark matter with Xenon-based detectors.
Observation of the cosmic ray moon shadowing effect with the ARGO-YBJ experiment
2011
Cosmic rays are hampered by the Moon and a deficit in its direction is expected (the so-called Moon shadow). The Moon shadow is an important tool to determine the performance of an air shower array. Indeed, the westward displacement of the shadow center, due to the bending effect of the geomagnetic field on the propagation of cosmic rays, allows the setting of the absolute rigidity scale of the primary particles inducing the showers recorded by the detector. In addition, the shape of the shadow permits to determine the detector point spread function, while the position of the deficit at high energies allows the evaluation of its absolute pointing accuracy. In this paper we present the obser…
Primo Levi: luci e ombre
2021
The article lists the significant occurrences of the twofold element of light and darkness in Primo Levi’s published works. After a methodological introduction, which highlights premises and purposes of this starting research, the article provides an overview following an order by literary genre: poetry, narrative, essay writing. The last chapter lists the relevant occurrences of the “gray” colour in the edited books before I Sommersi e I salvati, in order to identify a possible birthplace of the well-known notion “gray zone” and to detect Levi’s earlier use of the gray colour as an attribute of moral ambiguity.
A Hybrid Frequency-Space Approach for Shape Measurement by Shadow Moirè Technique with Carrier Fringe Pattern
2006
In this paper, a novel methodology to process fringe pattern is presented. The core of the signal processing technique is the use of the direction information, a modulo 2π quantity that locally informs about the direction along which fringes grow with maximum rate. By using this information, it was possible to perform adaptive, direction - and orientation-based operations on fringe images in order to remove unwanted effects, to enhance the contrast and to extract the phase information encoded. The method has been applied on shadow moiré interferograms with carrier fringes in order to measure the surface of small objects. The developed algorithm allows to process fringes whose phase informat…
2012
The work of Sicilian puppets, not unlike the "total social facts" postulated by Marcel Mauss, is a "total" theatrical performance. It incorporates a series of collective representations able to account for the way Sicilian society was structured up to the second half of the twentieth century. In Sicily, the transmission of folklore knowledge was the result of constant interference between ancient and modern models, coexisting in different socio-cultural environments. This has given to the folkloristic practices (rites, techniques, expressive manifestations, etc.) a peculiar physiognomy, not reducible to clear oppositions between different social layers (hegemon / subaltern, rural / urban) o…
