LONG TIME BEHAVIOR OF A SHALLOW WATER MODEL FOR A BASIN WITH VARYING BOTTOM TOPOGRAPHY

We study the long time behavior of a shallow water model introduced by Levermore and Sammartino to describe the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid confined in a basin with topography. Here we prove the existence of a global attractor and give an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimension.

Two-Dimensional Hydraulic Modeling and Analysis of Morphological Changes in the Palancia River (Spain) During a Severe Flood Event on October 2000

This paper analyzes the possibilities that mathematical models offer to reconstruct flood events, and to predict their erosional and sedimentary effects. To that end, the severe flood event of October 2000 of the Palancia River (Valencia, Spain) is assessed. The hydraulic reconstruction was performed with the software GUAD 2D, a two-dimensional mathematical simulation model for shallow water conditions. The results obtained from the mathematical model and the hydraulic-sedimentological analysis were compared with the flood-related features mapped by means of geomorphologic photo-interpretation and field observations. Management of coastal waters and lagoons by mathematical circulation models requires determination of the hydraulic resistance of submerged vegetation. A plant typical of sandy coastal bottoms in the Mediterranean Sea is Posidonia oceanica, which is constituted by very thin and flexible ribbon-like leaves, about 1 cm wide and up to 1.5 m long, and usually covers the bottom with a density of 500-1000 plants/ m2. From the hydraulic viewpoint, P. oceanica constitutes a particular roughness, because, as the velocity increases, the leaves bend more and more until they lie down on the bottom. Long time behavior for a dissipative shallow water model

We consider the two-dimensional shallow water model derived by Levermore and Sammartino (Nonlinearity 14,2001), describing the motion of an incompressible fluid, confined in a shallow basin, with varying bottom topography. We construct the approximate inertial manifolds for the associated dynamical system and estimate its order. Finally, considering the whole domain R^2 and under suitable conditions on the time dependent forcing term, we prove the L^2 asymptotic decay of the weak solutions.

Diffusive Modeling of Aggradation and Degradation in Artificial Channels

The unsteady flow and solid transport simulation problem in artificial channels is solved using a three-equation model, coupled with a local erosion law. The three equations are the water mass and momentum balance equations, as well as the total solid load balance equation. It is shown that even during severe hydrological events inertial terms can be neglected in the momentum equation without any substantial change in the solution sought. Empirical equilibrium formulas were used to estimate the solid load as a function of the flow variables. Lower and Middle Cambrian brachiopods from the Iberian Chains and Sierra Morena (Spain)

Brachiopods from the Lower and Middle Cambrian of the Iberian Chains and Sierra Morena are described. The following taxa occur in the Iberian Chains: "Lingulella" sp., Redlichella cf. bohemica (Barrande), Dictyonina radioplicata sp. n., Micromitra sp., Trematobolus simplex (Vogel), Trematobolus borobiensis sp. n. and Jamesella sp. The taxa "Lingulella" sp. and Sibiria? sp. are reported from the Lower Cambrian of Sierra Morena. A non-hydrostatic pressure distribution solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations over irregular topography

Abstract We extend a recently proposed 2D depth-integrated Finite Volume solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations with non-hydrostatic pressure distribution. The proposed model is aimed at simulating both nonlinear and dispersive shallow water processes. We split the total pressure into its hydrostatic and dynamic components and solve a hydrostatic problem and a non-hydrostatic problem sequentially, in the framework of a fractional time step procedure. The role of topography and erosion in the development and architecture of shallow-water coral bioherms (Tortonian-Messinian, Cabo de Gata, SE Spain).

A Tortonian–Messinian bioherm belt developing in a heterozoan-dominated ramp was investigated along a 1.2 km continuous transect located in the Cabo de Gata region. Multivariate-Analysis of Phytoplankton and Related Environmental-Factors, in a Shallow Hypertrophic Lake

Data on some relevant environmental variables and phytoplankton species composition, collected from the hypertrophic shallow lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain) during 1980-88, were examined using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The hydrological cycle of the lake is manipulated for rice cultivation in the area. Seasonality and the particular hydrological cycle of the lake were the principal factors influencing long-term phytoplankton dynamics. Well-balanced bicharacteristic-based scheme for multilayer shallow water flows including wet/dry fronts

The aim of this paper is to present a new well-balanced finite volume scheme for two-dimensional multilayer shallow water flows including wet/dry fronts. The ideas, presented here for the two-layer model, can be generalized to a multilayer case in a straightforward way. The method developed here is constructed in the framework of the Finite Volume Evolution Galerkin (FVEG) schemes. The FVEG methods couple a finite volume formulation with evolution operators. The latter are constructed using the bicharacteristics of multidimensional hyperbolic systems.
