Morphological variation of the unionidae mussel Anodonta anatina
2013
ABSTRACT Morphology of a given species can vary among individuals, morphology differences can be found between populations males can be different from females (sexual dimorphism) or e.g. with young and old individuals. The aim of the present study was to investigate morphological variability in the unionidae mussel Anodonta anatina originating from two populations. Measured variables included length, height, width, volume and dry mass of shell, dry mass of soft tissues and gill blades, and age, sex, estimation of glochidium larvae produced. The main results included faster growth of mussels in Lake Koijärvi than in Lake Päijänne (at the age of 4-5 years), which may reflect the higher produc…
Spray nozzle characterization using high speed imaging techniques
2013
International audience; Spray characteristics play an important role in the application accuracy and efficiency of plant protection products. In this study, the spray angles, liquid sheet lengths and spray shapes of five hydraulic spray nozzles (Albuz ATR orange, Albuz ATR red, TeeJet XR 110 01, TeeJet XR 110 04 and TeeJet AI 110 04) were measured using a developed high speed imaging system. Results were compared with the results of existing measuring techniques using a flow rate test bench, a horizontal patternator and a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) laser.
Collisional Relaxation Processes Studied by Coherent Raman Spectroscopy for Major Species Present in Combustions
1992
The effects of collisional relaxation processes on the Q-branch profile of major species present in combustions have been studied by high resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy. Particular interest has focused on the following collisional systems: N2-N2, O2-O2, CO2-CO2, O2-N2, N2-CO2 and N2-H2O. For each colliding pair, starting from accurate determinations of line broadening coefficients over a wide temperature range, state-to-state rates for rotational energy transfers have been deduced by using various fitting laws. Among these rate laws, special attention has been paid to the temperature dependence of the energy corrected scaling (ECS) law combined with a hybrid exponential-power law …
Complex objects classified by morphological shape analysis and elliptical Fourier descriptors
2005
This chapter deals with the classification of complex objects by morphological shape analysis and elliptical Fourier descriptors. An unsupervised method has been proposed to identify components with specific shapes by a simple edge detector and to classify them via the description of their contours. A particular application has been arranged in order to evaluate the goodness of this approach when discriminating between normal and pathological human megakaryocytes. Alterations in these cells can occur in many pathological processes and in such cases the pattern, size and shape of the cytoplasm and/or of the nucleus are extremely varied.
A New Theoretical Approach on Teenage Cyclist-Vehicle Crash
2016
Data obtained in teenage cyclist impact against three vehicles (sedan, SUV and Pick Up), tested in previous works, are analyzed to verify the theoretical results by the coupling of momentum conservation principle and energy conservation principle. The speed of vehicle and thorax are compared with theoretical ones, obtaining an excellent agreement. Following the results found in the literature, particular emphasis is done on teenager cyclist thorax and head speeds, indicating that the cyclist speed can be theoretically until 1,41 times the impact speed, while greater values, until 2, are obtained in the simulations. A small slowing of the vehicle is found theoretically and in the simulations…

Cuerpos de energía: Formas alternativas de ser-en-el-mundo
2020
Based on an ethnographic approach, this paper explores how members of a new age spiritual movement known as ?Llave Mariana? (LLM) build and experience their bodies. At the same time, it develops a thick description of their ritual practices and later it analyzes, delving fundamentally into the phenomenological perspective, how these members shape and transform their forms of self-perception, experience, and representation of others and the environment. Finally, it considers the implications these spiritual practices have in the search and consolidation of alternative ways of being-in-the-world
Upside-down ship’s kel-shaped vaults as a contemporary design criteria. The case of the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza in Guimarães (Portugal)
2015
A contemporary worldwide trend is exposing the structural elements of a building to create an articulate and complex architecture whose lines of force give robustness, stability and, at the same time, a sort of lightness and frivolity to the entire construction. However, the combination between the visual conception of architecture and the principles of statics is not new to the world of construction. Exposed structure as a design approach may be observed in many historical buildings, either public, religious or private, and in several cultural and geographical areas where exposed structures communicate power, solidity, and rigour along with an instance of economy and lightness. In this wor…
