Predicting the equilibrium bed slope in natural streams using a stochastic model for incipient sediment motion
2011
In this paper, a method to predict the equilibrium bed slope in natural streams based on the incipient motion criterion is proposed. The method is based on the criterion suggested by Gessler to simulate the grain size distribution of the armour coat using the concept of critical shear stress of a sediment mixture. In particular, a different expression of the probability for a single particle size to be part of the armour coat is firstly proposed; then, a simple two-steps criterion is suggested to estimate the safety factor required by the proposed approach. The method is applied in three different Italian regions (Calabria, Basilicata, and Tuscany) and required several field campaigns invol…
COMPORTAMENTO CICLICO DI PANNELLI SOTTILI IN ACCIAIO
2013
Results of experimental tests on Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) placed in steel frames subjected to cyclic actions are presented, stressing the dissipative capacity of the system. The tests were performed at the DISMAT laboratory in Canicattì (AG) on scale specimens. The surrounding frame is made by HEA 160 beam and columns with pinned joint,…
STUDIO NUMERICO DELL'EMODINAMICA IN PAZIENTI CON DISSECAZIONE AORTICA DI TIPO B
2013
The development of type B aortic dissection (AoD) is caused by altered haemodynamic forces exerted on false and true lumina of dissected aorta. This work aims to study haemodynamic and morphological proprieties, which influence the progression or stability of type B AoD. Computational fluid-dynamic analyses were performed on three patients with type B AoD, whose two presented an aneurysm evolution and one presented no further complication connected with dissection. Blood flow features showed that the true lumen flow was laminar and uniform while false lumen flow lost the laminar characteristic with consequent vorticity formation. The entry point zone proximal to the aortic arch showed both …
Flow-induced structures in magnetorheological suspensions
1999
We have measured the yield stress of a magnetic suspension as a function of the external field. To explain the existence of this yield stress, we report a comparison between two models, one based on isolated chains of particles and the other taking into account that the structure is formed by aggregates of particles.
Role of Hemodynamic Forces in Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms: An Overview of a Complex Scenario.
2017
Background An understanding of the natural history of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has always played a critical role in presurgical or endovascular planning, to avoid possibly fatal events. Size, shape, morphology, and location are known risk factors for rupture of an aneurysm, but morphologic parameters alone may not be sufficient to perform proper rupture risk stratification. Methods We performed a systematic PubMed search and focused on hemodynamics forces that may influence aneurysmal initiation, growth, and rupture. Results We included 223 studies describing several hemodynamic parameters related to aneurysm natural history. In these studies, different modalities of aneurysm…

Numerical Simulations of the Flow Field of a Submerged Hydraulic Jump over Triangular Macroroughnesses
2021
The submerged hydraulic jump is a sudden change from the supercritical to subcritical flow, specified by strong turbulence, air entrainment and energy loss. Despite recent studies, hydraulic jump characteristics in smooth and rough beds, the turbulence, the mean velocity and the flow patterns in the cavity region of a submerged hydraulic jump in the rough beds, especially in the case of triangular macroroughnesses, are not completely understood. The objective of this paper was to numerically investigate via the FLOW-3D model the effects of triangular macroroughnesses on the characteristics of submerged jump, including the longitudinal profile of streamlines, flow patterns in the cavity regi…
