Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling of the Accretion Shocks in Classical T Tauri Stars: The Role of Local Absorption in the X-Ray Emission

2014

We investigate the properties of X-ray emission from accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs), generated where the infalling material impacts the stellar surface. Both observations and models of the accretion process reveal several aspects that are still unclear: the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is below the predicted value, and the density versus temperature structure of the shocked plasma, with increasing densities at higher temperature, deduced from the observations, is at odds with that proposed in the current picture of accretion shocks. To address these open issues we investigate whether a correct treatment of the local absorption by the surrounding medium …

Relativistic simulations of superluminal sources

1997

Abstract We present numerical simulations of the radio emission from hydrodynamical relativistic jets. The quiescent-state jet emission consists of quasi-periodic knots of high emission, associated with internal recollimation shocks. Superluminal components can be reproduced by introducing a square-wave perturbation in the injection velocity of the jet. Strong interactions of the resulting moving shock and the standing recollimations result in a “drag” and increase in emission of the latter.

Instabilities of four-wave mixing

2005

We predict that four-wave mixing driven by a dual frequency input undergoes different instability scenarios encompassing modulational instability or multiple shock formation in the anomalous and normal dispersion regime, respectively.

Complex singularities and PDEs

2015

In this paper we give a review on the computational methods used to capture and characterize the complex singularities developed by some relevant PDEs. We begin by reviewing the classical singularity tracking method and give an example of application using the Burgers equation as a case study. This method is based on the analysis of the Fourier spectrum of the solution and it allows to determine and characterize the complex singularity closest to the real domain. We then introduce other methods generally used to detect the hidden singularities. In particular we show some applications of the Padé approximation, of the Kida method, and of Borel-Polya method. We apply these techniques to the s…

Thermostability of Two Cyanobacterial GrpE Thermosensors

2011

GrpE proteins act as co-chaperones for DnaK heat-shock proteins. The dimeric protein unfolds under heat stress conditions, which results in impaired interaction with a DnaK protein. Since interaction of GrpE with DnaK is crucial for the DnaK chaperone activity, GrpE proteins act as a thermosensor in bacteria. Here we have analyzed the thermostability and function of two GrpE homologs of the mesophilic cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 and of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP1. While in Synechocystis an N-terminal helix pair of the GrpE dimer appears to be the thermosensing domain and mainly mediates GrpE dimerization, the C-terminal four-helix bundle i…

Manipulation of HSP70-SOD1 Expression Modulates SH-SY5Y Differentiation and Susceptibility to Oxidative Stress-Dependent Cell Damage: Involvement in …

2023

The differentiation of neural progenitors is a complex process that integrates different signals to drive transcriptional changes, which mediate metabolic, electrophysiological, and morphological cellular specializations. Understanding these adjustments is essential within the framework of stem cell and cancer research and therapy. Human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, widely used in neurobiology research, can be differentiated into neuronal-like cells through serum deprivation and retinoic acid (RA) supplementation. In our study, we observed that the differentiation process triggers the expression of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70). Notably, inhibition of HSP70 expression by KNK437 causes a dra…

Combinatory effects of temperature stress and nonionic organic pollutants on stress protein (hsp70) gene expression in the freshwater spongeEphydatia…

1995

This is the first documentation of a heat shock protein (hsp) response in sponges. Subjecting the freshwater sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis to temperature stress (18 to 33 C; 2 h) resulted in an increased expression (>10 times) of the M{sub r}70,000 (hsp70). The induction of hsp70 could be demonstrated on the level of gene expression and by quantification of the hsp70 protein. Temperature stress also resulted in a 25% reduction of sponge cell proliferation. A mixture of nonionic organic compound was extracted from water from the polluted Schwarzbach River (S. Hesse, Germany) by adsorption onto XAD-7 resin. Concentrations of this Schwarzbach River water extract at two and four items ambient le…

Pore-forming toxins activate MAPK p38 by causing loss of cellular potassium.

2009

Mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) p38 has emerged as a survival protein in cells that are attacked by bacterial toxins forming small membrane pores. Activation of p38 by pore forming toxins (PFT) has been attributed to osmotic stress, but here we show that loss of K+ is likely to be the critical parameter. Several lines of evidence support this conclusion: first, osmoprotection did not prevent p38-phosphorylation in alpha-toxin-loaded cells. Second, treatment of cells with a K+ ionophore, or simple incubation in K+-free medium sufficed to cause robust p38-phosphorylation. Third, media containing high [K+] prevented p38-activation by Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin, Vibrio cholerae c…

Reduction of ICD Shock Burden by Eliminating Back-Up Pacing Induced Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias

2014

ICD Shock Reduction by Subthreshold Pacing Introduction Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) may have the capacity to provoke or worsen ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VT). It has been reported that ICD shocks by itself can increase mortality. This study aimed to determine the role of back-up pacing-induced VT (PIT) in the overall ICD shock burden by avoiding pause-related ventricular back-up pacing. Methods and Results A population of 550 single-chamber ICD patients was studied. Of them, 17 (3%, 69 ± 16 years, 14 male) patients had documented episodes of PIT. A total of 431 VT episodes were documented including 89 (21%) due to PIT. In 3 patients, VT events were exclusively PITs. Aft…
