Late Carnian-Early Norian ammonoids from the GSSP candidate section Pizzo Mondello (Sicani mountain, Sicily).

2012

A small collection of ammonoids from the Upper Triassic Scillato Formation at Pizzo Mondello (Agrigento, Sicily) is studied. The specimens were collected in a framework of a project aimed at providing an integrated high-resolution bio-chronostratigraphic support to the Upper Carnian-Norian magnetostratigraphic scale defined at this site, that is located in an historical area from which G.G. Gemmellaro collected the Upper Triassic of ammonoids monographed at the beginning of the XX century. The specimens from Pizzo Mondello were bed-by-bed sampled and represent the first collection of Upper Triassic ammonoids described from Sicily since Gemmellaro time. Quite several levels of the Pizzo Mond…

Condition and Role of the Norman Cathedrals in the Fourteenth Century: Maintenance, Restoration and Renovation

2022

After conquering Sicily between 1061 and 1091, the Normans built new cathedrals that modified not only religious life, but also architecture and urban layout. Dramatic events, like wars, earthquakes, and fires, clumsy restorations and culpable inaccuracy have profoundly altered the appearance of Norman cathedrals. The aim of this paper is to analyse the state of conservation of the Cathedrals of Palermo, Monreale, Messina and Agrigento in the fourteenth century, when Sicily was profoundly affected by the war between the Angevins and the Aragonese that lasted ninety years and impoverished the island. The analysis of four case studies from the past will allow us to outline new perspectives fo…

Microbial diversity of traditional Sicilian cheeses

2017

In the last years, the microbial characterisation of traditional Sicilian cheeses, such as Caciocavallo Palermitano, Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Pecorino Siciliano and PDO Vastedda della valle del Belìce have been the object of different studies conducted by our research group. To this purpose, the aim of the present study was to describe the microbial population of traditional Sicilian cheeses.

The beginning of western greek amphorae production in western Sicily: archaeometric and archaeological studies on 6th–5th centuries BCE amphorae manu…

2020

About 560 western Greek amphorae (6th–5th centuries BCE) re-used in enchytrismos burials were unearthed in the necropolis of the Dorian-Chalcidian colony of Himera in northwestern Sicily. Among the most striking issues is the determination of their geographical provenance. For this purpose, ceramic samples chipped from freshly broken surfaces of all the amphorae were first subdivided into macrofabrics by the use of a hand lens. Thereon, the samples were studied in accordance with standardized methods by the use of reflected light microscopy. Due to the special focus of our project on the characterization of Sicilian productions, a selection of amphorae which showed visible, macroscopic affi…

Effect of the natural winemaking process applied at industrial level on the microbiological and chemical characteristics of wine.

2013

The composition of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) communities and the chemical evolution of the large-scale commercial vinification of Catarratto IGT Sicilia, carried out under the biological regime, was followed from grape harvest until bottling. Simultaneously to the maximum growth of yeasts, LAB counts reached high level of concentration (6-7 log CFU mL(-1)) during the first steps of the alcoholic fermentation. Yeast identification was determined applying different molecular methods. The highest species biodiversity was observed on grape and must samples taken soon after pressing. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was detected at dominant concentrations during the entire winemaking process.…
