Internet of Autonomous Vehicles: Architecture, Features, and Socio-Technological Challenges

2019

Mobility is the backbone of urban life and a vital economic factor in the development of the world. Rapid urbanization and the growth of mega-cities is bringing dramatic changes in the capabilities of vehicles. Innovative solutions like autonomy, electrification, and connectivity are on the horizon. How, then, we can provide ubiquitous connectivity to the legacy and autonomous vehicles? This paper seeks to answer this question by combining recent leaps of innovation in network virtualization with remarkable feats of wireless communications. To do so, this paper proposes a novel paradigm called the Internet of autonomous vehicles (IoAV). We begin painting the picture of IoAV by discussing th…

Discrete wavelet transform implementation in Fourier domain for multidimensional signal

2002

Wavelet transforms are often calculated by using the Mallat algorithm. In this algorithm, a signal is decomposed by a cascade of filtering and downsampling operations. Computing time can be important but the filtering operations can be speeded up by using fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based convolutions. Since it is necessary to work in the Fourier domain when large filters are used, we present some results of Fourier-based optimization of the sampling operations. Acceleration can be obtained by expressing the samplings in the Fourier domain. The general equations of the down- and upsampling of digital multidimensional signals are given. It is shown that for special cases such as the separab…

<title>Reaction-diffusion electrical network for image processing</title>

2006

We consider an experimental setup, modelling the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation without recovery term and composed of a 1D nonlinear electrical network made up of discrete bistable cells, resistively coupled. In the first place, we study the propagation of topological fronts in the continuum limit, then in more discrete case. We propose to apply these results to the domain of signal processing. We show that erosion and dilation of a binary signal, can be obtained. Finally, we extend the study to 2D lattices and show that it can be of great interest in image processing techniques.© (2006) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. A Comparative Analysis of Residual Block Alternatives for End-to-End Audio Classification

2020

Residual learning is known for being a learning framework that facilitates the training of very deep neural networks. Residual blocks or units are made up of a set of stacked layers, where the inputs are added back to their outputs with the aim of creating identity mappings. In practice, such identity mappings are accomplished by means of the so-called skip or shortcut connections. However, multiple implementation alternatives arise with respect to where such skip connections are applied within the set of stacked layers making up a residual block. While residual networks for image classification using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely discussed in the literature, their a…

Auto-Adaptive Trigger and Pulse Extraction for Digital Processing in Nuclear Instrumentation

2015

International audience; This paper presents a novel auto-adaptive method for pulse triggering and extraction. Pulse triggering uses a threshold that must be placed as close as possible to the noise level. We do this by means of an adaptive threshold level based on real-time noise level estimation. A dynamic estimation of the pulse length is also used for pulse selection. The proposed approach is largely insensitive to noise and enables autonomous extraction of pulses regardless of their shape, height or length. The proposed approach can be used with numerous types of detectors from an analog-to-digital converter, and can be used in conjunction with various pulse processing techniques such a…

Probing the Merits of Different Event Parameters for the Identification of Light Charged Particles in CHIMERA CsI(Tl Detectors With Digital Pulse Sha…

2013

We investigated the merits of different event parameters in the identification of Light Charged Particles (LCPs) with CsI(Tl) scintillators read out by photodiodes at high incident energy (400 MeV/u). This investigation is made possible by digital signal processing the output signals. As in the conventional analogue case, the digitized signals allow the discrimination of light charged particles by computing the fast and slow components. In addition other identification parameters as the rise time of the output pulses of the CsI(Tl) come out nearly for free. Aim of this paper is the investigation of novel identification plots and the probe of their merits, in particular at relativistic energ…

Silicon Detector Telescope for proton detection in electron scattering reactions at MAMI

2012

Abstract A new Silicon Detector Telescope has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron, with the goal to detect low-energy protons. It consists of seven silicon layers for energy and angle measurement and a plastic scintillator for triggering purposes. The detector subtends a solid angle up to 88 msr, depending on the distance from the target and covers the proton kinetic energy range of 25–41  MeV with the mean energy resolution σ E = 0.47 MeV , operating at 500 kHz. Digital signal processing methods applied for energy reconstruction have been important for keeping the acceptable energy resolution at high counting rates. The…

COMPASS—A COMPAct decay spectroscopy set-up

2018

Abstract A compact silicon detector array with high spatial granularity and fast, fully digital data recording has been developed and commissioned for the investigation of heavy and superheavy nuclear species. The detector array can be combined in close geometry with large volume germanium detectors. It offers comprehensive particle and photon coincidence and correlation spectroscopy by highly efficient evaporation residue, α , γ , conversion electron and X-ray detection supported by the high granularity of the implantation chip. Access to fast decay events in the sub-microsecond region is made possible by the fast timing properties of the digital signal processing. A novel Si-chip support …
