Background The World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist has fostered safe practice for 10 years, yet its place in emergency surgery has not been assessed on a global scale. The aim of this study was to evaluate reported checklist use in emergency settings and examine the relationship with perioperative mortality in patients who had emergency laparotomy. Allium achaium Boiss. & Orph. ex Boiss. (Alliaceae), a critical and misappreciated species of Greek flora is investigated from taxonomic point of view and illustrated. It belongs to A. sect. Codonoprasum and shows close relationships with the taxa of the A. stamineum Boiss group. Besides, its karyology, ecology and distribution are examined.
Allium makrianum (Alliaceae), a new autumnal species from Greece

Allium makrianum is described as a new species growing on the limestone of the Chios, north-eastern Aegean island (Greece). It is a very rare autumnal geophyte, showing some relationship with A. archeotrichon from Rhodos. Its iconography, morphology, chromosome number (2n=16), leaf anatomy, ecology and taxonomy are examined.
