Utility of Alternative Effect Size Statistics and the Development of a Web-Based Calculator: Shiny-AESC

2018

Alternative displays of effect size statistics can enhance the understandability and impact of validity evidence in a variety of applied settings. Arguably, the proliferation of alternative effect size statistics has been limited due to the lack of user-friendly tools to create them. Common statistical packages do not readily produce these alternative effect sizes and existing tools are outdated and inaccessible. In this paper, I introduce a free-to-use web-based calculator (https://dczhang.shinyapps.io/expectancyApp/) for generating alternative effect size displays from empirical data. This calculator requires no mathematical or programming expertise, and therefore, is ideal for academics …

Revisiting a Previously Validated Temperament Test in Shelter Dogs, Including an Examination of the Use of Fake Model Dogs to Assess Conspecific Soci…

2019

This study assessed the feasibility and reproducibility of a previously validated temperament test (TT) for shelter dogs. The test was developed to measure dog behaviour in the kennel, and traits of sociability towards people and other dogs, docility to leash, playfulness, cognitive skills, and reactivity. We introduced the use of differently sized fake dogs to check their appropriateness in correctly assessing sociability to dogs to broaden its applicability (as the original study used real stimulus dogs). We hypothesised that dogs&rsquo

Impacts of Touch Screen Size, User Interface Design, and Subtask Boundaries on In-Car Task's Visual Demand and Driver Distraction

2020

Visual distraction by secondary in-car tasks is a major contributing factor in traffic incidents. In-car user interface design may mitigate these negative effects but to accomplish this, design factors’ visual distraction potential should be better understood. The effects of touch screen size, user interface design, and subtask boundaries on in-car task's visual demand and visual distraction potential were studied in two driving simulator experiments with 48 participants. Multilevel modeling was utilized to control the visual demands of driving and individual differences on in-car glance durations. The 2.5” larger touch screen slightly decreased the in-car glance durations and had a diminis…

Wage Effects of Firm Size : Evidence from Linked Employer-Employee Panel

2017

This study explores the relationship between wages and firm size using large registered data and different identification strategies. We found that the effect of firm size on wages is negligible when worker and firm characteristics are accounted for. The findings are robust across identification strategies and numerous covariates. The findings are also consistent with the view that coordinated wage-setting systems narrow wage distributions. peerReviewed

Waterfront regeneration in front of heritage protection: challenges and opportunities in Catania waterfront

2020

Catania waterfront identity is based on spatial relationships between the “Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto” UNESCO site and the infrastructures – rail and harbour – that are in front of the XVI century city wall. Many realised and ongoing regeneration projects in this area (will) have impacts on cultural heritage. Protecting the cultural heritage will be critical to the promotion of a sense of identity and it should be a part of a further development that balances transformations with heritage protection. Like in some realised projects – “Le Ciminiere” expo centre and Old Customs building restoration – this will be relevant in “Archi della Marina” viaduct ongoing regeneration project.…

Recognizing Video Resolution by Monitoring Memory Metrics in Mobile Clients

2019

Content delivery is one of the most successful applications in mobile networks. Mobile edge servers are significantly contributing to the improvement of this type of applications, by also performing resolution adaptations as a function of the radio link quality observed by the users. In this paper, we face the problem of dynamically tracking the perceived video resolution by mobile clients in a mobile edge environment to guarantee an agreed Service Level Agreement (SLA). To this purpose, we propose a protocol-agnostic approach, based on monitoring some memory metrics of a running video streaming process at the mobile client, for identifying the time-varying resolution of the video content.

A valued partner or a mere support function : the role of marketing in Software-as-a-Service SMEs

2017

Ohjelmistoala on läpikäynyt valtavia muutoksia 2000-luvulla uusien teknologisten innovaatioiden syntyessä ja levitessä kiihtyvällä tahdilla. Pilvipalvelu on yksi tunnetuimmista innovaatioista ja kuvaa internetissä tapahtuvaa tietotekniikan käyttöä. Samaa nimitystä käytetään kaikista pilvessä tarjottavista palveluista, joista Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) on saanut laajimman suosion.
