TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in aqueous solutions

Abstract Nanostructured TiO 2 photocatalysts were synthesized by thermohydrolysis of TiCl 4 at 100 °C in various aqueous solutions. Anatase or rutile, binary mixtures of anatase and rutile or anatase and brookite, and ternary mixtures of anatase, brookite and rutile were obtained depending on the hydrolysis solution. The most efficient catalysts consisted of ternary mixtures of the three polymorphic TiO 2 phases.

Rate of photon absorption and turnover number: two parameters for the comparison of heterogeneous photocatalytic systems in a quantitative way

Abstract In order to correctly compare the performance of different photocatalytic systems using polycrystalline semiconductor oxides, two parameters are proposed: the rate of photon absorption (rpa) and the turnover number (tn). From these quantities the quantum yield (qy), which indicates the efficiency of the absorbed photons for promoting a reaction event, can be determined. The phenol photodegradation reaction, carried out in aqueous dispersions of polycrystalline TiO2 (anatase) of different preparation methods and sources, has been used as “test reaction” in order to determine the tn, rpa and qy values.

Surface properties of iron-titania photocatalysts employed for 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous TiO2 dispersion

Iron(III) doped specimens (0.01–5% atomic Fe ∶ Ti) have been prepared by impregnating polycrystalline “home prepared” TiO2 (mainly anatase) and have been studied for photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous dispersions. Some structural and surface properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and porosity measurements and FTIR monitoring of pyridine, ammonia and methanoic acid adsorption for surface acidity and basicity. Their surface properties were compared with a corresponding series of photocatalysts prepared by a coprecipitation method. Genesis of chlorine and sulphur in fumarolic emissions at Vulcano Island (Italy): assessment of pH and redox conditions in the hydrothermal system

Chlorine- and sulphur-bearing compounds in fumarole discharges of the La Fossa crater at Vulcano Island (Italy) can be modelled by a mixing process between magmatic gases and vapour from a boiling hydrothermal system. This allows estimating the compounds in both endmembers. Magma degassing cannot explain the time variation of sulphur and HCl concentrations in the deep endmember, which are more probably linked to reactions of solid phases at depth, before mixing with the hydrothermal vapours. Water Structure Recovery in Chaotropic Anion Recognition: High-Affinity Binding of Dodecaborate Clusters to γ-Cyclodextrin

Dodecaborate anions of the type B12X12(2-) and B12X11Y(2-) (X=H, Cl, Br, I and Y=OH, SH, NH3(+), NR3(+)) form strong (K(a) up to 10(6) L mol(-1), for B12Br12(2-)) inclusion complexes with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD). The micromolar affinities reached are the highest known for this native CD. The complexation exhibits highly negative enthalpies (up to -25 kcal mol(-1)) and entropies (TΔS up to -18.4 kcal mol(-1), both for B12I12(2-)), which position these guests at the bottom end of the well-known enthalpy-entropy correlation for CDs. A method for the separation, characterization and determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAE) and alkylether sulfates (AES) in industrial and environmental samples is described. Separation of the two surfactant classes was achieved in a 50:50 methanol-water medium by retaining AES on a strong anionic exchanger (SAX) whereas most FAE were eluted. After washing the SAX cartridges to remove cations, the residual hydrophobic FAE were eluted by increasing methanol to 80%. Finally, AES were eluted using 80:20 and 95:5 methanol-concentrated aqueous HCl mixtures. International audience; A new method for efficient ionization of sugars in the negative-ion mode of electrospray mass spectrometry is presented. Instead of using strongly hydrophobic dopants such as dichloromethane or chloroform, efficient ionization of sugars has been achieved by using aqueous HCl solution for the first time. This methodology makes it possible to use hydrophilic dopants, which are more appropriate for chromatographic separation techniques with efficient sugar ionization and detection in mass spectrometry. Interaction of metal ions with D-glucobenzothiazoline: isolation and characterization of the resultant products

Six different metal-ion complexes of D-glucobenzothiazoline were synthesized and characterized by analytical and spectral techniques. Formation of different types of species (ML and ML2) were observed with Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Zn2+ ions. Existence of an anomeric mixture in the case of the Cu2+ complex is identified from the EPR spectra, and the results were further supported by the simulated spectra. The structures were proposed based on different studies.
