Solubility in the fully hydrated CaO–SiO2–H2O system can be best described using two ideal C-S-H-(I) and C-S-H-(II) binary solid solution phases. The most recent structural ideas about the C-S-H gel permit one to write stoichiometries of polymerized C-S-H-(II) end-members as hydrated precursors of the stable tobermorite and jennite minerals in the form of 5Ca(OH)2·6SiO2·5H2O and 10Ca(OH)2·6SiO2·6H2O, respectively. Calculation of shear influences on the phase separation of polymer blends exhibiting upper critical solution temperatures

Calculations were performed on the basis of a generalized Gibbs energy of mixing G γ, which is the sum of the Gibbs energy of mixing of the stagnant system and E s, the energy stored in the system during stationary flow. With increasing shear rate γ, the demixing temperatures shift to lower values (shear-induced mixing; diminution of the heterogeneous area), then to higher values (shear-induced demixing), and finally to lower values again before the effects fade out. This work exploits the possibilities offered by the recently developed multivariate method named Science-Based Calibration (SBC), for the extraction of ‘analyte-specific’ chromatograms in on-line gradient reversed phase LC-infrared spectrometry (IR) in the presence of a high spectral and chromatographic overlapping between the analyte of interest, co-eluting sample matrix constituents and the mobile phase components. The SBC method uses an experimentally measured single response spectrum of the analyte of interest and representative noise to calculate an optimum regression vector (bopt(1)). Synthesis and photophysical properties of dansyl-based polyamine ligands and their Zn(II) complexes

The synthesis, potentiometric studies and photophysical properties of two new polyamine ligands (L1 and L2) possessing the dansyl chromophore were studied in aqueous 0.15 M NaCl. The compounds show the absorption and emissions bands characteristic of the dansylamide fluorophore and both present intramolecular excited state proton transfer at intermediate pH ranges. One of the ligands (L2) strongly coordinates Zn(II) leading to fluorescence quenching. Stem cells are presumed to survive various stresses, since they are recruited to areas of tissue damage and regeneration, where inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic cells may result in severe cell injury. We explored the ability of mesoangioblasts to respond to different cell stresses such as heat, heavy metals and osmotic stress, by analyzing heat shock protein (HSP)70 synthesis as a stress indicator. We found that the A6 mesoangioblast stem cells constitutively synthesize HSP70 in a heat shock transcription factor (HSF)-independent way. Abstract The aim of this work was to investigate ultrasound (US)-assisted green solvent extraction of valuable compounds from the microalgae Nannochloropsis spp. Individual green solvents (water, ethanol (EtOH), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) and binary mixture of solvents (water-DMSO and water-EtOH) were used for the extraction procedures. Maximum total phenolic compounds yield ( Y p ≈ 0.33) was obtained after US pre-treatment ( W = 400 W, 15 min), being almost 5-folds higher compared to that found for the untreated samples and aqueous extraction ( Y p ≈ 0.06). Cr(VI) sorption by intact and dehydrated Candida utilis cells in the presence of other metals

This study examined the Cr(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) sorption by intact and dehydrated Candida utilis cells. The anion [Cr2O7]2− and cation Me2+ sorption kinetics was investigated in both single- and dual-metal situations. Uptake of chromate anions occurred much more slowly singularly than with metal cations. A combination of Pb or Cu and chromate anions gave a synergistic effect for Cr(VI) sorption, but not Cd and Zn, which inhibited Cr(VI) sorption by dehydrated cells. The use of alcian blue to occupy maximum vacant adsorption sites on the cell surface unexpectedly did not influence further adsorption of Me2+. Physicochemical parameters, such as hydrophobicity, water solubility, and volatility, of four flavor compounds (ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-pentanone) were determined. The amount of flavor compounds released from different model matrices (mineral water, purified triolein, an oil-in-water emulsion, a carbohydrate matrix, and a complex matrix containing lipids and carbohydrates) into the gaseous phase was determined at thermodynamic equilibrium, at 37 degrees C, by static headspace gas chromatography. If volatile organoselenides are to be analyzed for their stable Se isotope composition to elucidate sources and formation processes, organoselenides need to be trapped quantitatively to avoid artificial Se isotope fractionation.
