How viable are spanish credit cooperatives after recent bank capitalization and restructuring regulations?
2011
Over the past three years, major reforms have been approved in Spain in order to restructure the banking sector. The purpose of these reforms has been to reinforce the solvency of credit institutions through recapitalization and integration into larger organizations. The credit cooperatives have not presented any solvency problems which would justify these measures being applied to them. The problem that the financial authorities see in their case is their limited size. As a result, the credit cooperatives are immersed in an integration process which is not revolving around the Banco Cooperativo Español (BCE) or the Spanish Association of Rural Savings Banks, as might be expected, but is ta…

Inequality and poverty in a developing economy: Evidence from regional data (Spain, 1860-1930)
2015
Apart from measuring inequality and poverty at the provincial level in Spain between 1860 and 1930, this paper empirically assesses the relationship between economic growth and both inequality and destitution. The results, on the one hand, confirm the presence of a KuznetsÕ curve. However, although growing incomes did not directly contribute to reducing inequality, at least during the early stages of modern economic growth, other processes associated with economic growth significantly improved the situation of the bottom part of the population. On the other hand, growing incomes and lower inequality levels are shown to have been pro-poor.

Teatro del Siglo de Oro y ópera italiana del Seiscientos: un balance
2012
In 1992, during the 15th Conference of the International Musicological Society, a round table about «Spanish and French Theater in Italian Opera of the Seventeenth Century» took place in Madrid. It was a seminal moment in the discussion about the influence of Spanish Siglo de Oro Theater on the Italian Opera of the Seventeenth Century. This influence is today beyond question and is being revealed as an important aspect to understand both the success of Venetian Opera and the dissemination of Siglo de Oro Theater outside Spain. This article aims at illustrating and discussing the results of twenty years of scholarly research on the subject; it also suggests new paths of investigation. En 199…

The Use of Non-Conventional Water Resources as a Means of Adaptation to Drought and Climate Change in Semi-Arid Regions: South-Eastern Spain
2019
Drought is a climatic risk with notable repercussions on water supply systems. The aim of this study is to analyze the principal measures for management and planning implemented during recent decades in south-eastern Spain (Segura River Basin) to respond to drought situations, focusing on the role played by non-conventional water resources (desalination and treated water). The results demonstrate that the study area (despite being one of the driest places of Spain) is less vulnerable to drought than regions with an Atlantic climate and greater availability of water. This has been possible thanks to the integration of non-conventional water resources as a means of adaptation to confront this…
