The use of Stokes-Mueller polarimetry for assessment of amyloid-β progression in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease
2020
Abstract Alzheimer’s disease, being a major societal burden, demands improvement of current techniques for its treatment and diagnostics. Currently only autopsy histology is able to provide the definite diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease. However, the procedure is rather time consuming and costly. In the current study, we utilized Stokes and Mueller polarimetry techniques to screen for amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded mouse brain tissue at different stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The study has shown that the presence of Aβ plaques influences the properties of scattered polarized light. The Poincaré sphere was used as a graphical tool for the visualization of the a…
Structural analysis of copper(I) interaction with amyloid β peptide
2019
Abstract The N-terminal fragment of Aβ (β = beta) peptide is able to bind essential transition metal ions like, copper, zinc and iron. Metal binding usually occurs via the imidazole nitrogens of the three His residues which play a key role in the coordination chemistry. Among all the investigated systems, the interaction between copper and Amyloid β assume a biological relevance because of the interplay between the two copper oxidation states, Cu(II) and Cu(I), and their involvement in redox reactions. Both copper ions share the ability to bind Amyloid β. A huge number of investigations have demonstrated that Cu(II) anchors to the N-terminal amino and His6, His13/14 imidazole groups, while …
Synthesis and structural elucidation of novel antifungal N-(fluorophenyl)piperazinyl benzoxaboroles and their analogues
2019
Abstract Series of novel N-(fluorophenyl)piperazine derivatives of phenylboronic compounds including benzoxaboroles, phenylboronic acids and phenylboronic methyl monoester have been obtained by facile synthetic methods starting from 2-formylphenylboronic acid. Molecular and crystal structures of those novel derivatives have been investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The Bond Valence Vector Model was used to describe strains in the boron coordination sphere. Microbiological activity of novel benzoxaboroles as well as their corresponding acid analogues against: A. niger, A. terreus, P. ochrochloron, C. tenuis and F. dimerum has been evaluated. The presence of heterocyclic b…
Coordination properties of the ACE inhibitor captopril towards Me2Sn(IV)2+ in aqueous solution, and biological aspects of some dialkyltin(IV) derivat…
2003
Abstract The coordination of Me 2 Sn(IV) 2+ (M) to captopril { N -[( S )-3-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl]- l -proline, H 2 (cap), H 2 L} in aqueous solution was studied by means of potentiometric titration, electrospray mass spectrometry, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the pH range 2–11 ( I =0.1 mol dm −3 NaClO 4 , 298 K). The results obtained with these methods proved that only monomeric complexes are formed in solution. In the acidic pH range, species with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:1 exist. The neutral complex ML, similarly to the complex Me 2 Sn(cap) crystallized in the same pH range, adopts a tbp structure with eq S − and ax COO − , while, instead of the coordina…
Copper(II)-assisted hydrolysis of 2,4,6-tris(2-pyrimidyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpymt): syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of [Cu(bpcam)…
2005
Abstract The reaction of the 2,4,6-tris(2-pyrimidyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpymt) ligand with copper(II) perchlorate or sulfate in aqueous solution affords complexes [Cu(bpcam)(H2O)2]ClO4 · 3H2O (1), [Cu(bpcam)(H2O)2][Cu(bpcam)(H2O)(SO4)] · 2H2O (2) and [Cu2(bpcam)2(H2O)2(SO4)] · H2O (3) [bpcam = bis(2-pyrimidylcarbonyl)amidate], whose structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Copper(II) promotes the hydrolysis of tpymt in mild conditions yielding the bpcam group which is present in the structures of 1–3 as a tridentate ligand. The structure of 1 consists of mononuclear [Cu(bpcam)(H2O)2]+ cations, uncoordinated perchlorate anions and water of crystallization. Th…
29Si NMR and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Studies of the Effect of Alkaline Ions (Li+, Na+, and K+) in Silico-Alkaline Sols
1999
Alkali−silica reactions (ASR) which occur in concrete can be simulated in laboratory by destabilization of silico-alkaline aqueous solutions by addition of calcium ions. The relevant features of the reaction depend on the nature of alkaline ions (Li+, Na+, or K+) and on the silica/alkaline ratios which fix the distribution of the molecular species in the precursor solution. 29Si NMR spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques were used to study the structure and size distribution of molecular and colloidal species in sols with different silica/alkaline molar ratio and several types of alkaline ions. Experimental SAXS curves were simulated using a simple structural model …
Territorialization in Political Discourse: A Pragma-Linguistic Study of Jerzy Buzek’s Inaugural Speeches
2011
The purpose of this study is to review some discursive strategies used to (de)territorialize the European public sphere by the newly elected President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek. A corpus of his inaugural speeches (over 7,000 words) is examined in order to identify salient pragma-linguistic devices, such as for example high-frequency references, linguistic markers of identities, values and interests, as well as metaphors and argumentative schemata. These are presumed to have been used by Buzek to territorialize the presidential office: to position himself as its leader, to establish his credibility, to become its agenda-setter. Additionally, the analysis focuses on the way Buzek…
Minidisk dynamics in accreting, spinning black hole binaries: Simulations in full general relativity
2021
We perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting, equal-mass binary black holes in full general relativity focusing on the impact of black hole spin on the dynamical formation and evolution of minidisks. We find that during the late inspiral the sizes of minidisks are primarily determined by the interplay between the tidal field and the effective innermost stable orbit around each black hole. Our calculations support that a minidisk forms when the Hill sphere around each black hole is significantly larger than the black hole's effective innermost stable orbit. As the binary inspirals, the radius of the Hill sphere decreases, and minidisk sconsequently shrink in size. As a result, ele…
Factors for inconsistent aerosol single scattering albedo between SKYNET and AERONET
2016
SKYNET and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) retrieved aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA) values of four sites, Chiba (Japan), Pune (India), Valencia (Spain), and Seoul (Korea), were compared to understand the factors behind often noted large SSA differences between them. SKYNET and AERONET algorithms are found to produce nearly same SSAs for similarity in input data, suggesting that SSA differences between them are primarily due to quality of input data due to different calibration and/or observation protocols as well as difference in quality assurance criteria. The most plausible reason for high SSAs in SKYNET is found to be underestimated calibration constant for sky radiance (ΔΩ). T…
European Mediterranean Women and the “Showdown” Between Public Emancipation and Private Self-oppression
2020
This chapter emphasizes the unfinished nature of a form of late-modernity still hanging in the balance between frameworks of representation and legitimization regarding women and the roles they play within the public sphere in virtue of the emancipation that has taken place and the contradictions which emerge when trying to reconcile old and new models of femininity. We shall, therefore, try to disengage some of the knots linking gender violence and “cultural representations” but, above all, the “adaptive preferences” and “corrosive disadvantages” found in European women’s private lives, which clash totally with their social achievements and are attributable to emotional oppression and, sim…
