Heart rate variability in individuals with thoracic spinal cord injury

Cross-sectional study. The main goal of our study was to explore the differences in heart rate variability (HRV) while sitting between able-bodied (AB) participants and paraplegic (P) individuals. The study was conducted in the Physical Therapy department and the Physical Education and Sports department of the University of Valencia and Vall d’Hebron Hospital. Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event often leading to poor neurologic outcomes. One of the most widely practiced treatments has been the administration of methylprednisolone. However, today its use has been called into question over concerns of efficacy and safety. Magnetic resonance imaging of postrepair-myelomeningocele — findings in 31 children and adolescents

Magnetic resonance imaging has clearly demonstrated its efficacy in the diagnosis of pathological processes in the C.N.S. We examined 31 children who had undergone plastic closure of myelomeningocele a few days post partum. We could show that a high percentage of the patients (89%) presented the pathological anatomy of a tethered spinal cord; clinical symptoms of the tethered spinal cord syndrome, i.e. progressive neurological symptoms, however, are rarely observed. Possible revision of neurosurgical treatment of MMC is discussed.

People with disabilities are at increased risk for obesity as well as other secondary conditions that lead to further decline in health and functional status. Presurgical role of MRI tractography in a case of extensive cervicothoracic spinal ependymoma

Background: Intramedullary spinal ependymoma is a tumor, hardly characterizable with conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging only. Objetivos: Determinar el efecto de un programa de entrenamiento de pedaleo de brazos (PB) estacionario, sobre el sistema cardiorrespiratorio de personas con tetraplejia. Metodo: Se estudiaron 11 participantes con tetraplejia por lesion medular (LM) de origen traumatico a niveles entre C4 y C6. Se midieron variables espirometricas (VC, FVC y MVV) y de Variabilidad de la Frecuencia Cardiaca VFC (HR, STDHR, RMSSD, LF, HF y HRVPOWER), antes y despues de 8 semanas de entrenamiento. Mutations in the Matrin 3 gene cause familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

MATR3 is an RNA- and DNA-binding protein that interacts with TDP-43, a disease protein linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia. Using exome sequencing, we identified mutations in MATR3 in ALS kindreds. We also observed MATR3 pathology in ALS-affected spinal cords with and without MATR3 mutations. Our data provide more evidence supporting the role of aberrant RNA processing in motor neuron degeneration. © 2014 Nature America, Inc. All rights reserved.
