A syntactic analysis of the subject clitic a in the Friulian variety of Campone

2015

This article presents a syntactic analysis of the third person subject clitic a in Camponese, a heretofore unstudied Friulian variety. Following Poletto's (2000) map of subject clitics, we argue that it bears [+third person] features, and is, in fact, the spell-out of the functional head Subj°, located in the highest projection of TP (following Rizzi & Shlonsky 2007). In the first part of the article, we offer a detailed description of the distribution and syntactic properties of the subject clitic a, identifying its position in relation to the other elements that occur in the CP and TP. In the second part we discuss two proposals put forward to account for split clitics like a-l in the…

Pseudo-relatives and their left-periphery

2016

In this article I propose a new analysis of Pseudo-Relative clauses ('PRs') within the Cartographic model (Rizzi 1997 a.o.). Heretofore, the apparently contradictory behaviour of PRs in the syntactic tests used to determine their structure has been very problematic. Based on new data from Italian, I show that PRs are Small Clauses with a ForceP projection. Moreover, I explain the inconsistent results of the syntactic tests by claiming that PRs can be embedded in different syntactic environments. More specifically, they can be inserted as 'bare' Small Clauses into the matrix clause or be part of a bigger structure: i.e., a Complex-DP, a locative adjunction or a 'Larsonian' structure.

Settore M-GGR/02 - Geografia Economico-PoliticaThe current debate about the Italian territorial reorganization makes again fundamental the concept of «territory». This paper aims to reflect on some important dynamics that concern the idea of territory. More in particular I explore in which form it can be (re)semantised through some tourism representations and narrations able to create specific ways of interaction. By taking into account the case study of the Lonely Planet 2017 digital tourist guidebook dedicated to Sicily that splits (and reorganizes) the island in smaller «regions» it is possible to reflect on a complex space dynamic able to redefine the same idea of territory. Indeed the tourist guidebook uses both texts and geographical maps to propose an anthology of homogeneous and coherent destinations to make the Otherness more accessible for the readers. This process demonstrates how symbolic (re)productions of a territory can give rise to specific constructions of places creating different concepts of region and therefore performative spaces and opportunities of «agency». In other terms the (re)definition of the Sicilian territory proposed by the guide invites tourists to consider a new (narrated) geography invites and invites to interact with it thinking as visitors. From a geographical and cultural point of view reflection on these dynamics allows us to consider some (re)definitions of space in relation to forms of textualization (even on the maps). An imaginary but performative geography that attributes to the concept of territory epistemological and gnoseological possibilities.Settore M-GGR/01 - Geografia

Optical retarder system with programmable spectral retardance.

2014

An optical system that works as a retarder waveplate with programmable spectral retardance is proposed. The system is based on a pixelated liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM). The input light beam is spectrally dispersed and different spectral components are projected onto different pixels of the LCoS-SLM. A different retardance is then addressed for each pixel, adapted to the incoming wavelength. Light reflected from the SLM is then recombined by the same setup. In this way a programmable polarization spectrum can be encoded. We illustrate the broadband characterization that is required for proper use of the system. Then several examples are shown, including spec…

Dispersion management in two-photon microscopy by using diffractive optical elements.

2013

We demonstrate efficient generation of wide-field fluorescence signals in two-photon microscopy exploiting diffractive optical elements and short pulses by using a dispersion-compensated beam delivery optics module. Computer-generated holograms are codified onto a phase-only spatial light modulator, which allows for arbitrary single-shot patterning of the sample. Spatiotemporal shaping of the pulse is mandatory to overcome spatial chirp and pulse-front tilt effects that spread both in space and time the irradiance patterns, thus limiting not only the spatial resolution but also the signal-to-noise ratio in two-photon microscopy. By using a multipass amplifier delivering 30 fs, 0.8 mJ pulses…

Design of a real-time spectroscopic rotating compensator ellipsometer without systematic errors

2014

6th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (ICSE), Kyoto, JAPAN, MAY 26-31, 2013; International audience; We describe a spectroscopic ellipsometer in the visible domain (400-800 nm) based on a rotating compensator technology using two detectors. The classical analyzer is replaced by a fixed Rochon birefringent beamsplitter which splits the incidence light wave into two perpendicularly polarized waves, one oriented at +45 degrees and the other one at-45 degrees according to the plane of incidence. Both emergent optical signals are analyzed by two identical CCD detectors which are synchronized by an optical encoder fixed on the shaft of the step-by-step motor of the compensato…

Combining split-and-merge and multi-seed region growing algorithms for uterine fibroid segmentation in MRgFUS treatments

2016

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that can affect female patients during reproductive years. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) represents a noninvasive approach that uses thermal ablation principles to treat symptomatic fibroids. During traditional treatment planning, uterus, fibroids, and surrounding organs at risk must be manually marked on MR images by an operator. After treatment, an operator must segment, again manually, treated areas to evaluate the non-perfused volume (NPV) inside the fibroids. Both pre- and post-treatment procedures are time-consuming and operator-dependent. This paper presents a novel method, based on an advanced direct region detection model, …

Spin relaxation in Cu and Al spin conduits

2014

We study the spin relaxation in Al and Cu spin conduits embedded in non-local spin valve nanostructures. Measuring the key spin transport properties, we determine the spin and charge diffusion constants as well as the spin flip time. By varying the temperature, we find that the maximum of the non-local spin resistance change occurs at finite temperatures with a clear difference between Al and Cu. In particular, we find that the maximum of the non-local spin signal in Al is less pronounced and occurs at lower temperatures compared to Cu suggesting that the self-passivating Al surface plays a role. Having fabricated devices with both materials in identical processes, we can attribute the diff…

A new eight-coordinate complex of manganese(II): synthesis, crystal structure, spectroscopy and magnetic properties of [Mn(Hoxam)2(H2O)4] (H2oxam=oxa…

2001

Abstract The crystal structure of an eight-coordinate manganese(II) compound containing oxamato and water molecules as ligands [Mn(Hoxam)2(H2O)4], were H2oxam=oxamic acid, has been determined by X-ray diffraction on single-crystals. The coordinated oxygen atoms are located at the vertices (corners) of a distorted bicapped trigonal antiprism. Hydrogen bonding is responsible for an extended 3D-network. The magnetic susceptibility data of the compound have been investigated. χMT follows the Curie law, at very low temperatures χMT decreases smoothly due to weak intermolecular interactions and/or due to a small zero field splitting of the sextuplet spin state of the Mn(II).
