Sequential Therapy with Azelastine in Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

2011

A sequential therapy treatment with azelastine (Allergodil (r) ) in seasonal allergic rhinitis is introduced. In the critical early stage, treatment begins with a combination of azelastine tablets (azelastine hydrochloride, CAS 79307-93-0) and azelastine nasal spray (azelastine, CAS 58581-89-8), and after five days only the nasal spray is administered. This sequential therapy model aims at achieving the quickest and most complete effect without reducing the tolerability. The investigation was carried out as a randomized, controlled double-blind phase IV study of parallel group design with 300 patients during 14 days. In the first five days, one group was given one puff (0.14 mg) of azelasti…

Rapid assay of resveratrol in red wine by paper spray tandem mass spectrometry and isotope dilution.

2017

A rapid analytical approach for the assay of resveratrol in red wines, based on Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry (PS-MS) and Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) is described. The assay involves the use of the stable isotope dilution method. The analytical parameters calculated analyzing fortified samples confirm the reliability of the proposed approach, with accuracy values about 100%, and LOD and LOQ values calculated at 0.5 and 0.8 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, both the recovery, which was quantitative for the analyte, and the reproducibility (RSD%), checked on different days on the same wine, always below 7%, highlighted the consistency of the methodology.

Enhanced anticancer effect of quercetin microparticles formulation obtained by spray drying

2022

This study unravels a formulation made of food-based microparticles (MPs) able to control the release of quercetin, a natural anticancer compound, which activity is only limited by its poor aqueous solubility and consequent low bioavailability. To solve this issue, a spray-dried micro delivery system was developed using a bench mini spray dryer B290 Buchi. The resulting MPs were only manufactured with foodderived ingredients such as whey proteins and milk, avoiding the use of any other synthetic material. These microparticles were characterised with a testing campaign encompassing either the physical–chemical characterisation with SEM, DSC and DLS, or the technological and biological featur…

Chemical composition and source attribution of sub-micrometre aerosol particles in the summertime Arctic lower troposphere

2021

Aerosol particles impact the Arctic climate system both directly and indirectly by modifying cloud properties, yet our understanding of their vertical distribution, chemical composition, mixing state, and sources in the summertime Arctic is incomplete. In situ vertical observations of particle properties in the high Arctic combined with modelling analysis on source attribution are in short supply, particularly during summer. We thus use airborne measurements of aerosol particle composition to demonstrate the strong contrast between particle sources and composition within and above the summertime Arctic boundary layer. In situ measurements from two complementary aerosol mass spectrometers, t…

A multi-model assessment of the impact of sea spray geoengineering on cloud droplet number

2012

Artificially increasing the albedo of marine boundary layer clouds by the mechanical emission of sea spray aerosol has been proposed as a geoengineering technique to slow the warming caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gases. A previous global model study (Korhonen et al., 2010) found that only modest increases (< 20%) and sometimes even decreases in cloud drop number (CDN) concentrations would result from emission scenarios calculated using a windspeed dependent geoengineering flux parameterisation. Here we extend that work to examine the conditions under which decreases in CDN can occur, and use three independent global models to quantify maximum achievable CDN changes. We find that dec…

Concentrations, composition, and sources of ice-nucleating particles in the Canadian High Arctic during spring 2016

2019

Modelling studies suggest that the climate and the hydrological cycle are sensitive to the concentrations of ice-nucleating particles (INPs). However, the concentrations, composition, and sources of INPs in the atmosphere remain uncertain. Here, we report daily concentrations of INPs in the immersion freezing mode and tracers of mineral dust (Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn), sea spray aerosol (Na+ and Cl−), and anthropogenic aerosol (Zn, Pb, NO3-, NH4+, and non-sea-salt SO42-) at Alert, Canada, during a 3-week campaign in March 2016. In total, 16 daily measurements of INPs are reported. The average INP concentrations measured in the immersion freezing mode were 0.005±0.002, 0.020±0.004, and 0.186±0.040…

A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures

2016

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.

Multicomponent solid dispersion as a formulation strategy to improve drug permeation: A case study on the anti-colorectal cancer irinotecan

2019

Abstract Multicomponent solid dispersions (MSD)s are frequently proposed as efficient drug delivery systems to improve drug solubility and bioavailability. In this study, the effects of specific excipients, such as mannitol, inulin, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic)acid (PMMA) and cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) have been tested to potentially improve irinotecan (IRN) permeation in the intestinal tract with the intention to protect the drug from the gastric environment. MSDs were formulated as microparticles by Spray-Drying technique. Raw materials and microparticles have been characterized by FTIR analysis to determine hydrogen bonding. SEM images were recorded to investigate morp…

In-flight temperature of solid micrometric powders during cold spray additive manufacturing

2020

Abstract During cold dynamic gas spray additive manufacturing, the thermal field within particles is generally simplified by a state of an instantaneous uniform distribution over the particle's media at any position inside and outside the De-Laval nozzle. This paper addresses critical discussions using analytical and computational analysis of the transient heat transfer within the solid particles due to the convective exchange with the flowing gas. An analytical criterion depicts conditions of instantaneous uniform temperature over the range of typical cold spray data including various particle thermal conductivity, particle size range, dragging velocities, gas nature and gas setting condit…

Preparation and characterization of brass-based coatings

2018

Cold Spray (CS) has been widely investigated owing to its high deposition efficiency and retention of the properties of starting materials. Thus, this process has shown obvious advantages over the fabrication of different copper-based deposits and its alloys over other techniques, such as electroplating, Laser Cladding or thermal spraying. As one of the main copper alloys, brass is implanted in the fields of architecture or industry. Nevertheless, nowadays it is clear that there is very little work on brass coatings, and they were mainly made by electroplating and any other deposition methods, which has severely limits their uses in many applications. This study was applied to develop the br…
