Self-Diffusion of Associating Star-Shaped Polymers

2016

The dynamics of associating bonds in transient polymer networks exerts a paramount influence on their relaxation and time-dependent mechanical properties. In particular, diffusive motion of polymers mediated by the dissociation and association equilibrium of reversible junctions can affect the materials’ structural stability, dynamic mechanical properties, and a broad spectrum of functionality that arises from the constant motion of polymer chains. In this work, forced Rayleigh scattering is used to measure the diffusion of terpyridine end-functionalized four-arm poly(ethylene glycol) polymers transiently interlinked by zinc ions in organic solvent across a wide range of length and time sca…

The influence of counterions and hydrophobic moieties on the thermostability of Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers

1994

Abstract Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers with various counterions and different organic moieties (one- and two-chain fatty acids, polymeric acid) are prepared to investigate on line temperature-dependent structural changes and desorption by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), interference-enhanced reflection and Nomarsky microscopy. On temperature increase a sequence of phase transitions can be observed. A crystalline LB film melts to a fluid phase and eventually desorbs either from droplets or from a homogeneous film. The phase sequence depends on the counterion: nickel stearate and magnesium stearate melt while the layered structure is conserved; SAXS measurements reveal a continuous,…

B-DNA Structure and Stability as Function of Nucleic Acid Composition. Dispersion-Corrected DFT Study of Dinucleoside-Monophosphate Single and Double…

2013

actions of the sugar-phosphate skeleton with water; (6) hydrophobic interactions of the DNA cylindrical core, made up by the hydrogen-bonded and stacked nitrogen bases, with the water solvent. Recently, there has been increasing effort in developing and applying quantum chemical methods able to reproduce the structure of native B-DNA and to correctly describe the energy involved in the intrastrand and interstrand noncovalent interactions between the nucleotide monomers. This topic has been approached by both wave function methods and density functional theory. [2] Water solvent and sodium counterions also play an important role in the formation and relative stabilization of the double-helic…

Effective complexation of psychotropic phenethylammonium salts from a disodium dipyrazolate salt of macrocyclic structure

2002

The equilibrium stability constants (Ks) of ammonium pyrazolate complexes [L2−]2RN(R′)H2+ (3, R′ = H and 4, R′ = Me) formed from a macrocyclic disodium dipyrazolate salt 2[L2−] 2Na+ and ammonium salts (RNH3+X− or RN(Me)H2+X−) of psychotropic drugs and neurotransmitter catecholamines have been evaluated by electrochemical methods in DMSO solution. The resulting Ks values demonstrate that, except for (±)-amphetamine, the complexes formed by lipophilic primary [mescaline, (+)-amphetamine, (±)-p-methoxyamphetamine (PMA), (±)-3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA)] and secondary [(±)-methamphetamine, (+)-methamphetamine and (±)-3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA ‘ecstasy’)] phenethylamines are…

Sustainable nanocomposites based on halloysite nanotubes and pectin/polyethylene glycol blend

2013

Abstract This study was focused on the preparation and characterization of biofilms based on pectin/polyethylene glycol 20000 (PEG) blend and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The obtained blends loaded with a natural nanoclay are proposed as sustainable alternative to the polymers produced from non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. Properties of technological interest have been monitored and they were correlated to the structural features of the nanocomposites. It turned out that the wettability of the films can be tuned by changing the composition and the distribution of HNTs into the material as well as the surface roughness. The tensile properties of the blend are enhanced by the pre…

Effect of small amounts of poly(lactic acid) on the recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles

2011

Abstract Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most used commodity polymers, especially for food and beverage applications, and its recycling is of great importance because of the possible use in the textile and construction industries. On the other hand, the interest in biodegradable polymers has led, in recent years, to the use of materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) also in the food and beverage industry. The presence of small amounts of PLA in the PET waste can significantly affect the post-consumer recycling process. In this work, the effect of the presence of small amounts of PLA on the recycling of PET bottles is investigated by rheological, mechanical, morphological …

The influence of weathering processes on labile and stable organic matter in Mediterranean volcanic soils

2008

The relationship and mechanisms among weathering processes, cation fluxes, clay mineralogy, organic matter composition and stability were studied in soils developing on basaltic material in southern Italy (Sicily). The soils were transitions between Phaeozems and Vertisols. Intense losses of the elements Na, Ca and Mg were measured indicating that weathering has occurred over a long period of time. The main weathering processes followed the sequence: amphibole, mica, volcanic glass or if ash was the primary source→smectite→interstratified smectite–kaolinite→kaolinite. Kaolinite formation was strongly related to high Al, Mg and Na losses. The good correlation between oxyhydroxides and kaolin…

Factors influencing the transport of tryptophan hydrochloride through supported liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers

1997

Commercially available PTFE membranes were used as a support for liquid membranes in amino acid transport. Using tryptophan as a model amino acid, the influence of the type of organic liquid, kind of macrocyclic carrier and counter-ion on transport efficiency was examined. These studies show the strong influence of the kind of the counter-ion co-transported with amino acid cation, and the type of macrocyclic carrier used on the transport efficiency. The transport efficiency depends also on the pH of the source phase and on the nature of the organic liquid used as a membrane solvent. Liquid membranes supported on commercial porous-PTFE-membranes with hydrophobic solvents are stable for more …

Differential behaviour of Pseudomonas sp. 42A2 LipC, a lipase showing greater versatility than its counterpart LipA

2009

Abstract Growth of Pseudomonas sp. 42A2 on oleic acid releases polymerized hydroxy-fatty acids as a result of several enzymatic conversions that could involve one or more lipases. To test this hypothesis, the lipolytic system of strain Pseudomonas sp. 42A2 was analyzed, revealing the presence of at least an intracellular carboxylesterase and a secreted lipase. Consensus primers derived from a conserved region of bacterial lipase subfamilies I.1 and I.2 allowed isolation of two secreted lipase genes, lipA and lipC, highly homologous to those of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Homologous cloning of the isolated lipA and lipC genes was performed in Pseudomonas sp. 42A2 for LipA and LipC over-expr…

2012

In this work we present simple preparation of original trityl group containing glassy luminescent 6-styryl substituted derivatives of 2-(2-tert-butyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)malononitrile (DWK-1TB), 2-(2-tert-butyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)-2- ethyl-2-cyanoacetate (KWK-1TB), 2-(2-tert-butyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione (ZWK-1TB) and 5-(2-tert-butyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)pyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione (JWK-1TB). Their optical properties have been investigated. The absorption maxima of synthesized glasses is in region from 425 nm to 515 nm and emission maxima is from 470 nm to 625 nm in solution of dichloromethane. But absorption maxima of their solid films is from 425 nm to 500 nm and em…
