Enhanced nonlinear optical properties and thermal stability of donor-acceptor substituted oligothiophenes

Abstract Linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of novel donor-acceptor substituted α-oligothiophenes were investigated by means of electrooptical absorption measurements (EOAM) and electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH). The second-order polarizabilities β(−2ω; ω, ω) were related to dipole changes Δμ ag and transition dipoles μ ag associated with low-lying charge-transfer (CT) excitations by using the perturbational two-level approximation. Systematic variation of the donor and acceptor groups led to compounds with exceptional nonlinearity and thermal stability. Role of the central gold atom in ligand-protected biicosahedral Au 24 and Au25 clusters

The crystal structures of the ligand-protected clusters [Au24(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]+ and [Au25(PPh3)10(SC2H4Ph)5Cl2]2+ have been elucidated recently, and they comprise the same biicosahedral structural motif for the Au core. The only difference is the central Au atom joining two icosahedra which is absent in the Au24 cluster. On the basis of density functional simulations, we have evaluated the structural, electronic, optical, and vibrational properties of the clusters in question with a full presentation for the thiolate and phosphine side groups. Thermal stability and reaction of chalcogen-containing metallocenic compounds with elemental chalcogens

Abstract Dissymmetrical four-membered bimetallocenacycles (t-BuC 5 H 4 ) 2 M(μ-S) 2 M′-(RC 5 H 4 ) 2 (M, M′ = Zr, Hf; R = H, t-Bu) have been prepared and found to give redistribution products in solution at 190°C; identification of these products shows that the reaction involves exclusive cleavage of a metal-sulfur bond. Elemental sulfur and selenium react with chalcogen-containing complexes. The reaction is shown to involve the introduction of chalcogenic species in place of the σ-ligands of the complex to give either four-membered bimetallic complexes or catenated pentachalcogen metallocenic compounds. As copolymers with defined sequences they contain up to five oxyethylene units per repeating unit. Novel synthesis of spherical MCM-48

Abstract A novel synthesis route was developed for the cubic member of the M41S family, MCM-48, with a three-dimensional pore system allowing the formation of submicrometre- to micrometre-sized beads with a narrow pore-size distribution. The synthesis is based on the modified Stober method applying tetraethoxysilane, ethanol, water, ammonia and n -hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as template. The specific surface area, the specific pore volume and the average pore diameter were varied in the following ranges: 900–1600 m 2  g −1 , 0.5–0.9 cm 3  g −1 and 2–3 nm. Aluminium-, chromium-, gallium-, niobium- and vanadium-MCM-48 were also synthesized following this procedure.

Pyrenyl substituted 1,8-naphthalimide as a new material for weak efficiency-roll-off red OLEDs: a theoretical and experimental study

Based on the theoretical calculations of excited states and semiconducting properties, a new 1,8-naphthalimide derivative having an electron-donating 1-pyrenyl group at the C-4 position was designed and synthesized. This derivative exhibited an excellent thermal stability and bipolar charge carrier transport ability. It was successfully utilized as a host in red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes showing an efficient energy transfer from the host to the phosphorescent emitter. The derivative may be a single material electroplex-forming host for PhOLEDs. Arylazopyrazoles for Long-Term Thermal Energy Storage and Optically Triggered Heat Release below 0 °C.

Arylazopyrazole derivatives based on four core structures (4pzMe, 3pzH, 4pzH, and 4pzH-F2) and functionalized with a dodecanoate group were demonstrated to store thermal energy in their metastable Z isomer liquid phase and release the energy by optically triggered crystallization at -30 °C for the first time. Three heat storage-release schemes were discovered involving different activation methods (optical, thermal, or combined) for generating liquid-state Z isomers capable of storing thermal energy. Comparison of thermal stratification, light attenuation and Chlorophyll-a dynamics between the ends of Lake Tanganyika

Thermal structure, light attenuation, and chlorophyll-a dynamics within the upper 100 m at the northern and southern ends of Lake Tanganyika were measured from August 1995–July 1996. Pronounced variability of thermal structure in time, depth and region were observed. During the dry windy season (June–September), the water column in the south was largely isothermal down to 100 m, while in the north stratification was detectable.
