Development of the adhesive pad on climbing fig (Ficus pumila) stems from clusters of adventitious roots

2003

Vines have different climbing strategies; one type, called clinging vines, has developed a specialized structure, the adhesive pad that secretes a sticky substance that adheres to almost any substrate. In this study on the climbing fig, Ficus pumila L., we report on the developmental anatomy of clusters of adventitious roots that become transformed into this unique structure. Clustered adventitious roots in F. pumila are initiated in pairs on either side of a vascular bundle at the 2nd to 3rd internodes of young stems. After emergence through the cortex and epidermis, root hairs form, which secrete a substance that stains positively for polysaccharide and protein. The adventitious roots and…

The surface modification of polymers to modulate endothelial cell growth

1996

The effect of nitrogen ion implantation or ion-assisted film deposition on the growth of human endothelial cells in vitro on a substrate has been studied. It was shown that the largest change occurs when TiO2 films were reactively sputtered onto the substrates, while the most passive surface was reactively sputtered SiO2. SEM pictures of the cells adhering to the various treated surfaces show that the cells were healthy. Future studies on the effect of alloy films and their oxides and nitrides are proposed.

Reactive oxygen species mediate angiotensin II-induced leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions in vivo

2001

Abstract Chronically elevated angiotensin II (Ang-II)-induced hypertension is partly mediated by superoxide production. In this study, we have investigated whether the leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions elicited by Ang-II involve reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Intravital microscopy within the rat mesenteric microvessels was used. Superfusion (60 min) with Ang-II (1 nM) induced significant increases in leukocyte rolling flux, adhesion, and emigration, which were inhibited by pretreatment with superoxide dismutase or catalase. Dihydrorhodamine-123 oxidation indicated that ROS are primarily produced by the vessel wall. Administration of dimethylthiourea, desferrioxamine, or N-a…

Comparative Biological Properties and Mineralization Potential of 3 Endodontic Materials for Vital Pulp Therapy: Theracal PT, Theracal LC, and Bioden…

2021

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to assess the biological properties and mineralization potential of the new Theracal PT (Bisco Inc, Schaumburg, IL) compared with its predecessor Theracal LC (Bisco Inc) and the hydraulic silicate-based cement Biodentine (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France) on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in vitro. METHODS Standardized sample discs were obtained for each material (n = 30) together with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 material eluates. Previously characterized hDPSCs were cultured with the different materials in standardized conditions, and the following assays were performed: a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, a woun…

Effect of Xyloglucan Oligosaccharides on Growth, Viscoelastic Properties, and Long-Term Extension of Pea Shoots

1997

Abstract The growth-promoting effect of xyloglucan-derived oligosaccharides was investigated using a bioassay with entire pea (Pisum sativum L., var Alaska) shoots. After a 24-h incubation period at 25[deg]C, xyloglucan oligosaccharide (XGO) solutions with concentrations of 10–6 M notably increased the growth rate of pea shoots, whereas the same oligosaccharides at 10–7 M were less effective. To investigate the possible correlation between growth rate changes in the XGO-treated shoots and changes in the wall mechanical properties of their growing regions (third internodes), we used a short-term creep assay. The promotion of elongation by XGOs was reflected in an enhancement of the viscoelas…

Microcirculatory Dysfunction Induced by Cigarette Smoking

2000

This review deals with the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation, both in terms of morphological (i.e., vessel wall injury, capillary loss) and functional aspects. The latter concerns predominantly changes in tissue perfusion and its regulatory mechanisms (i.e., reactive hyperemia, sequestration of blood cells in the microcirculation). The mechanisms of action of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation include compromised endothelial-dependent vasorelaxation, platelet aggregation, endothelial cell dysfunction, and the activation of circulating leukocytes. Through these mechanisms, cigarette smoking elicits the aggregation and adhesion of leukocytes and/or platel…

Barns egne stemmer i mekling – En kvalitativ studie av barns erfaringer i obligatorisk mekling etter foreldres samlivsbrudd/skilsmisse

2017

Masteroppgave psykisk helsearbeid ME504 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Children`s participation in mediation after parent`s brake-up/divorce is a political priori area. Our focus on the importance of preventive work gave us interest in investigating this theme further. The aim was to clarify children`s experiences from participation in mandatory mediation. We focused on how the children`s voices were weighted when the arrangement of care was made, and how the children wanted to be met in mediation. Our research-questions were: «How do children experience their voices being weighted in mandatory mediation after parent`s brake-up/divorce»? and «Which wishes of change in mediation do they tell a…

The Effect of Plant Water Status on the Chemical Composition of Pistachio Nuts (Pistacia vera L. Cultivar Bianca)

2020

Pistachio nuts are worldwide appreciated for their chemical and organoleptic profiles. There are several studies on the influence of irrigation on pistachio productivity, whereas there are little available data on the influence on nut quality. In this study we characterized some qualitative traits of pistachio nuts cultivar Bianca in Mediterranean environment and how plant water status affected them. Water status had a positive and significant influence on the chlorophylls content, nuts from less stressed trees showed higher values of chlorophyll a (14.7 mg/100 g) and b (21.1 mg/100 g) compared than more stressed trees (9.3 and 11.5 mg/100 g for a and b, respectively). Solid phase microextr…

Zebrafish Fins as a Model System for Skeletal Human Studies

2007

Recent studies on the morphogenesis of the fins ofDanio rerio(zebrafish) during development and regeneration suggest that a number of inductive signals involved in the process are similar to some of those that affect bone and cartilage differentiation in mammals and humans. Akimenko et al. (2002) has shown that bone morphogenetic protein-2b (BMP2b) is involved in the induction of dermal bone differentiation during fin regeneration. Many other groups have also shown that molecules from the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily (TGFβ), including BMP2, are effective in promoting chondrogenesis and osteogenesisin vivoin higher vertebrates, including humans. In the present study, we review…
