Hydrogen back-up power system with photovoltaic direct energy transfer regulation and interleaved boost for space applicattions

2012

This work details a power conditioning unit for photovoltaic/hydrogen based energy systems in space applications. The power conversion techniques applied are similar to the ones used on photovoltaic/battery space power systems. A direct energy transfer photovoltaic regulator is devised for feeding two outputs; the first output corresponds to the main unregulated battery bus and the second output sets a power path to feed an electrolyser. A modular fuel cell converter completes the system and operates when photovoltaic energy is not available or load demand exceeds the generated photovoltaic power, providing electrical power from a fuel cell. An ancillary battery, located in the main bus, di…

Ev charging station at university campus

2017

This paper faces the technical and economic challenges related to the design of a green recharge area for electric vehicles at the Campus of Palermo, Italy, with the aim of reduce both costs and pollution connected to the charging process. Based on the behaviour of the student population, the electrical load is identified and two possible solutions are evaluated to manage the peak load: an orientation of the panels increasing the power at defined time and the use of a storage system. The main strength and weakness points of two systems are investigated by taking into account the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which reaches 75.3 €/MWh for the orientation of panel and 103 €/MWh for stor…

PV System Design for Off-Grid Applications

2015

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has the versatility and flexibility for developing off-grid electricity system for different regions, especially in remote rural areas. While conventionally straight forward designs were used to set up off-grid PV-based system in many areas for wide range of applications, it is now possible to adapt a smart design approach for the off-grid solar PV hybrid system. A range of off-grid system configurations are possible, depending upon load requirements and their electrical properties as well as on site-specific available energy resources. The overall goal of the off-gird system design should be such that it should provide maximum efficiency, reliability and …

Thermal and non-thermal preservation techniques of tiger nuts' beverage "horchata de chufa". Implications for food safety, nutritional and quality pr…

2017

"Horchata de chufa" is a traditional Spanish beverage produced from tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus L.). Due to its richness in nutritional compounds, it is highly perishable and its conservation by pasteurization and/or adding preservatives is required. Although efficient, conventional thermal treatment for pasteurization induces changes in the nutritional and sensory properties. Replacing conventional pasteurization by non-thermal technologies such as pulsed electric fields, ultraviolet, and high pressure, combined with moderate temperatures (<40°C) allows a reduction of energy consumption, along with the preservation of the most thermo-sensitive molecules. Accordingly, this review deals w…

Study of the imaging conditions and processing for the aspect control of specular surfaces

2001

A vision system capable of imaging and detecting defects on reflective nonplanar surfaces in the production line at a high cadence is presented in this paper. Defects are typically dust located under the metallic layer of packaging products used in cosmetic industries. To realize this processing, structured lighting which reveals the defects in the image is proposed. Defects appear clearly in the images like a set of brilliant pixels in dark zones. The signature of the defect is then obtained. The size of this signature does not depend linearly on the size of the defect. It is a function of the observation angle. In order to realize a precise and robust process, the necessity of acquiring s…

Response of rainbow trout transcriptome to model chemical contaminants.

2004

We used high-density cDNA microarray in studies of responses of rainbow trout fry at sublethal ranges of beta-naphthoflavone, cadmium, carbon tetrachloride, and pyrene. The differentially expressed genes were grouped by the functional categories of Gene Ontology. Significantly different response to the studied compounds was shown by a number of classes, such as cell cycle, apoptosis, signal transduction, oxidative stress, subcellular and extracellular structures, protein biosynthesis, and modification. Cluster analysis separated responses to the contaminants at low and medium doses, whereas at high levels the adaptive reactions were masked with general unspecific response to toxicity. We fo…

Advice for health-care professionals on how to retrieve more efficiently scientifically strong and up-to-date studies on treatments by PubMed.

2008

AND trial (Title/Abstract))). Obviously, clini- cians using the PubMed Clinical Queries may be unaware of the PubMed search engine technical approach even whether they can remain unaware of what the PubMed search engine is doing. We demonstrated substantial mild retrieval bias of PubMed Clinical Queries filter focusing on therapy (narrow search) that can miss up-to-date scientifically information on treatments. This bias occurs because the search string does not consider the Britannic English variant of the term randomized (i.e., randomised). We suggested a slight change in the original search string by the addition of the term randomised as follows: (randomized controlled trial (Publicatio…

Persistent Tachypnea of Infancy. Usual and Aberrant.

2016

Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) is a specific clinical entity of undefined etiology comprising the two diseases neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) and pulmonary interstitial glycogenosis. The outcome of typical NEHI is favorable. The outcome may be different for patients without a typical NEHI presentation, and thus a lung biopsy to differentiate the diseases is indicated. To determine whether infants with the characteristic clinical presentation and computed tomographic (CT) imaging of NEHI (referred to as "usual PTI") have long-term outcome and biopsy findings similar to those of infants with an aberrant presentation and/or with additional localized minor CT findings (…

Physicochemical compatibility and stability of nebulizable drug admixtures containing Dornase alfa and tobramycin.

2012

The objective of this in-vitro study was to determine whether admixtures of the inhalation solutions Pulmozyme(®) (Dornase alfa) and either Bramitob(®) or Tobi(®) (both containing Tobramycin) are physicochemically compatible and to analyze the aerodynamic parameters of these admixtures. After mixing, test solutions were stored at room temperature and under ambient light conditions over a period of 24 h. Tobramycin concentrations were determined by using a fluorescence immunoassay. Stability of dornase alfa was determined by size-exclusion high performance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet spectroscopy, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and tentacle strong cation-exc…

German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA)--new software design, parameters and their definitions.

2011

BACKGROUND The working group for aortic surgery and interventional vascular surgery of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS) initiated the web-based German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection type A (GERAADA). It is the project's aim to collect standardized data from a large pool of patients with acute aortic dissections type A (AADA) to gain a deeper insight and knowledge to improve surgical therapies and perioperative management for these patients in the future. METHODS In addition to new medical insights, the working group has gained more experience over the last 4 years in how to collect valid and high-quality data. This experience led us to revise the dat…
