Some of the views in the fourth volume of the Voyage Pittoresque by the Abbot of Saint-Non, published in two parts (1785 and 1786) in Paris, reproduce architectural structures and urban settings of Sicily in the modern era. Among the places chosen by the architects and painters who took part in the campaign carried out between 1777 and 1778, those relating to the architecture of the time were considerably fewer in number (five out of a total of one hundred and forty subjects). The contribution traces the story relating to the construction of the tower facade of the Mother Church of Salaparuta, destroyed by the earthquake of the Belice Valley in 1968 and of which there are, in addition to the historical iconography, also many stone blocks that once constituted the imposing structure. The research conducted evaluates any designers, the reference models identifiable in some Austrian area solutions, the design constraints determined by the seismic rush of the area, the similarities and differences with the architectures of the same type identified in the eastern area of Sicily and built after the earthquake of 1693.

Between the late XVIth century and the middle of the XVIIth century Naples and Messina, two large southern cities and important seats of the viceroyalty, sponsored outstanding festivals and book festivals that may also explain the aesthetical changes of the period. The "Southern Baroque" style was born with different characteristics and features from the Roman Baroque. The images of the festivals use an opulent language in relation to contemporary repertoires of windows and doors which may have contribuited to a progressive change of taste in Spain from the second half of the century and during the last years of Philip IV's reign.
