Mimicking Spatial Aesthetics: the Kunsthalle-effect on Young British Artists

This chapter argues that UK artists at the end of the 20th century were confronted with the utter absence of Kunsthalle-like spaces in their country, but they set forth to independently organise such exhibition venues and to produce artworks or installations that would fit in there, in order to speak a global language.

The chapter addresses the rise of the Young British Artists (YBA) in their home country and their subsequent international spread during the 1990s as seen in connection with the Venice Biennale occurring between 1993 and 2003. Particularly, the author argues that the Aperto ’93 section devoted to young artists at the Arsenale for the 45th Biennale was an unexpected starting point for the YBAs on the global stage and their first Venetian appraisal convinced home institutions such as the British Council to finance a large program of international exhibitions for this new artistic generation. Some people find it very annoying to visit a contemporary art show and to remain stuck in darkened rooms with videos running on monitors or projected against the walls. However, it is hard not to be drawn towards the passing frames and the audience inevitably tries to pick up the plot. Video art appears capable to bind the spectator compelling one in front of the screen, waiting to be amused or repelled. All’arcivescovo Beccadelli è riferito un Breviarium miniato a più mani variamente riconosciute. L’intervento ricostruisce, identificando due stemmi post confezione non appartenenti al committente (1. goffrato sul taglio concavo, 2. c. VIv), altrettanti inediti passaggi di mano del ms. (XV-XVII sec.) An illuminated Breviarium by several hands variously recognized is referred to Archbishop Beccadelli. The work reconstructs, by identifying two post-package coats of arms not belonging to the patron (1. embossed on the concave cut, 2. c. VIv), as many unpublished hand transitions of the ms. (15th-17th cent.)
