Evaluation of biological properties of extracts obtained from marine biomass assisted by pulsed electric fields (PEF) and pressurized liquid extracti…

2022

Comparative sclerochronology of modern and mid-Pliocene (c. 3.5Ma) Aequipecten opercularis (Mollusca, Bivalvia): an insight into past and future clim…

2009

Records of environment contained within the accretionarily deposited tissues of fossil organisms afford a means of detailed reconstruction of past climates and hence of rigorous testing of numerical climate models. We identify the environmental factors controlling oxygen and carbon stable-isotopic composition, and microgrowth-increment size, in the shell of modern examples of the Queen Scallop, Aequipecten opercularis. This understanding is then applied in interpretation of data from mid-Pliocene A. opercularis from eastern England. On the basis of oxygen-isotope evidence we conclude that winter minimum seafloor temperature was similar to present values (typically 6–7 °C) in the adjacent so…

Doublecortin expression in the adult rat telencephalon

2001

Doublecortin (DCX) is a protein required for normal neuronal migration in the developing cerebral cortex, where it is widely expressed in both radially and tangentially migrating neuroblasts. Moreover, it has been observed in the adult rostral migratory stream, which contains the neuronal precursors traveling to the olfactory bulb. We have performed DCX immunocytochemistry in the adult rat brain to identify precisely the neuronal populations expressing this protein. Our observations confirm the presence of DCX immunoreactive cells with the characteristic morphology of migrating neuroblasts in the subventricular zone, rostral migratory stream and the main and accessory olfactory bulbs. We ha…

Optical sensor for remote estimation of alcohol concentration in blood stream

2013

Abstract The purpose of this manuscript is to validate our recently developed novel optical approach for extraction of remote vibration sources as a successful technique to estimate the alcohol concentration in blood stream. This technique is based on the tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckle patterns produced in human skin when being illuminated by a laser beam. Since the skin’s vibrations profile is changed due to the alcohol in the blood stream, the extraction of the vibration profile can be translated into the corresponding alcohol concentration values by means of defining several parameters acting as indicators for the presence of alcohol in the blood stream. We h…

FALCON - joint fair airtime allocation and rate control for DASH video streaming in software defined wireless networks

2020

Software Defined Wireless Networks offer an opportunity to enhance the performance of specific services by applying centralized mechanisms which make use of a global view of the network resources. This paper presents FALCON, a novel solution that jointly optimizes fair airtime allocation and rate recommendations for Server and Network Assisted DASH video streaming, providing proportional fairness among the clients. Since this problem is NP-hard, FALCON introduces a novel heuristic algorithm that is proved to achieve almost optimal results in a practical amount of time. The performance of FALCON is evaluated when used in conjunction with three referent Adaptive Bit Rate strategies (PANDA, BO…

<title>Distance functions in dynamic integration of data mining techniques</title>

2000

One of the most important directions in the improvement of data mining and knowledge discovery is the integration of multiple data mining techniques. An integration method needs to be able either to evaluate and select the most appropriate data mining technique or to combine two or more techniques efficiently. A recent integration method for the dynamic integration of multiple data mining techniques is based on the assumption that each of the data mining techniques is the best one inside a certain subarea of the whole domain area. This method uses an instance-based learning approach to collect information about the competence areas of the mining techniques and applies a distance function to…

Improving big-data automotive applications performance through adaptive resource allocation

2019

In automotive applications, connected vehicles (CVs) can collect various information (external temperature, speed, location, etc.) and send them to a central infrastructure for exploitation in a wide range of applications: Eco-Driving, fleet management, environmental monitoring, etc. Such applications are known to generate a massive volume of data that is processed in real or near real time (i.e., data streams) depending on the target application requirements. To handle this data volume, big data architectures, based on stream computing paradigm, are usually adopted. Within this paradigm, data are continuously processed by a set of operators (elementary operations) instances. Further, a str…

Revenue models in cloud computing

2012

Cloud computing brings new possibilities, allowing software firms to sell their software products using the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. SaaS provides opportunities for flexible pricing but creates challenges on how to achieve a profitable revenue stream. In this multicase study, the revenue models of five SaaS providers were examined. The main interest of the study was to investigate the different revenue models and the reasons for using particular revenue models. The revenue models were found to be mainly based on software renting, with a variety of pricing strategies. For SaaS providers, software renting generates a steady and predictable stream of revenue. The software renting mo…

A STUDY ON THE POSSIBLE EFFECT OF TWO CRAYFISH SPECIES ON EPILITHIC ALGAE IN A MOUNTAIN STREAM FROM CENTRAL SPAIN

2006

The effects on epilithic algae of increasing densities of two crayfish species, Austropotamobius italicus and Pacifastacus leniusculus, the latter recently introduced in Spain, have been monitored using riverine enclosures, within a large experimental study on crayfish-macrobenthos interactions in a mountain stream. A 3-month test was carried out for each species using crayfish densities comprising between 0-5 individuals/m2 kept in 1-m2 enclosures. Epilithon was sampled periodically within the enclosures and chlorophyll a, b and c were measured by spectrophotometry. Neither statistically significant positive nor negative effects were observed on algal abundance (Chl concentrations) during …
