Recovery of aphasia: a case study with “dual” tdcs.
2011
Objectives. In the present study we used a “dual” tDCS (Vines et al., 2008; Giglia et al., 2011) training on inferior frontal gyrus’s (IFG) areas in order to improve the linguistic performance of EBE, an Italian female, left-handed, presenting a global aphasia following a stroke of right middle cerebral artery. Materials. For the picture naming task, 20 object and 20 action images, selected from a set of picture standardized for frequency, were presented on a paper sheet one at time. Method. Stimulation was used at 1mA for 15 minutes. Dual tDCS was given over both IFGs, cathode in the right (damaged areas) and anode in the left (preserved areas) daily for two weeks (weekend-free). The posit…

Lesions to the posterior insular cortex cause dysarthria
2011
Background: Up to now, there are few systematic studies in a sufficient number of patients with lesions involving the insular cortex (IC) examining whether damage of the IC is directly related to dysarthria. Thus, this is the first study applying modern voxel-lesion behaviour mapping (VLBM) aimed to examine whether the IC is involved in dysarthria – and if so – which part of the IC is involved. Methods: Twenty-five patients with acute stroke lesions affecting the IC and peri-insular region were investigated employing VLBM analysis. Results: Present data indicated that dysarthria is associated with stroke lesions affecting the right- and left-sided posterior IC. Conclusions: Owing to the…
The burden of mood-disorder/cerebrovascular disease comorbidity: essential neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and physical activity interventions
2017
Cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) and CVD-related disorders (including cerebrovascular diseases; CBVDs) are a major public health concern as they represent the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries. Patients with CVDs and CBVDs co-morbid with mood disorders, especially bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), suffer reduced quality-of-life and significant disability adjusted for years of life and mortality. The relationship between CVDs/CBVDs and mood disorders is likely to be bidirectional. Evidence for shared genetic risk of pathways involved in stress reaction, serotonin or dopamine signalling, circadian rhythms, and energy balance was reported i…
Thalamic stroke mimicking frontotemporal dementia: a case report
2012
Background: The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is characterized by changes of personality, social behavior and cognition and relies on a neurodegenerative process. However, vascular lesions affecting subcortical structures may result in a clinical syndrome resembling bvFTD. Objective: To describe a case of thalamic stroke resulting in frontal dementia. Case report: A 58-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of behavioral and cognitive changes formerly diagnosed as bvFTD. In 2010, he suddenly presented loss of consciousness and in the next days he developed amnesia, apathy and personality changes. Toxicological exams, CSF analysis and CT scan were normal at…

Akūta išēmiska insulta pacientu aprūpe pēc intravenozās trombolīzes
2019
The Role of Perceived Energy and Self-Beliefs for Physical Activity and Sports Activity of Patients With Multiple Sclerosis and Chronic Stroke
2021
Physical activity counteracts some of the negative consequences associated with chronic neurological diseases. Here, we describe the levels of physical activity (PA) and sports activity (Sport) in patients with multiple sclerosis (pMS, n = 59) and chronic stroke (pStroke, n = 67) and test compliance with the recommendation for health-promoting physical activity of the World-Health Organization (WHO). Secondly, we tested for differences between the groups of patients, and thirdly, we examined relationships between PA and Sport with psychological indicators of perceived energy (fatigue and vitality) and self-beliefs (self-efficacy and self-control). Psychological constructs were assessed with…
