The photo diaries method to catch the daily experience of Italian university students during COVID-19 lockdown
2022
The aim of this research was to explore Italian students’ lockdown experience during the COVID-19 pandemic to understand their emotions and the coping strategies they played out during their daily lives at home through photo diaries. The research was carried out in six Italian universities involving 109 participants. The task required each student to take one photo per day for one week in T1 and one in T2, representing their mood during their daily life at home and to give it a title and a brief description. Overall, 1,526 photographs with texts were collected. The main subjects of the photographs were objects, the most frequent coping strategy was self-distraction, and most participants ex…
eCity: Virtual City Environment for Engineering Problem Based Learning
2015
The main objective of the eCITY project is to design, develop and validate a pedagogical methodology, supported by an online, collaborative, city-development simulation engine (Simcity like) that stimulates the integration and continuous exploitation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in engineering and science schools but, at the same time, fostering the interest for these orientations in secondary school students. Sensing and Generating New Opportunities for Value Innovation: How Team Behaviour Contributes to Success or to Failure?
2017
The behavioral side of the decision process inherent to strategy is an issue that is gaining attention from both academic and practitioners. At the same time, the Schumpeterian conception of innovation, returns to gain relevance in an environment where technology leads to process dematerialization and exponential paths of change. In this context, this paper analyses which decision processes, cognitive abilities and heuristics lead to sense and generate value innovation for customers. The analysis of 26 master student teams that ran the same strategy simulator show that the consideration and description of a wide range of alternatives and team agreement as a result of discussion of such alte…
Urban Orienteering Competitions – A Unique Activity of Didactic Communication
2014
Abstract The aim of our project was to deepen understanding of the legacy of our predecessors, which are to be found in the historical centre of Sibiu, to develop map reading skills using the techniques and rules of orienteering. Most students participated enthusiastically in the search for historical sights and found the activity extremely attractive. Moreover, both the preparation stage, when the students learnt all together or in groups how to use a map in order to locate the historical sights, and the follow-up stage, when they disseminated the results, contributed to developing team spirit and a sense of belonging. Communication among students and with the form teacher also improved an…
Reconstruction of undergraduate analytical chemistry laboratory course
2016
The Analytical chemistry laboratory course at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä was reconstructed due to problems in the traditional arrangement, structure and contents of the course. The purposes of the reform were: to increase student-centered activity, co-operation and inquiry-based learning; to strengthen the connections to real-life; to develop students’ critical-thinking skills; and to decrease the number of drop-outs during the course. The reconstructed course includes independent laboratory work tasks and a research project. The results of the projects are presented in a course seminar. All of the laboratory experiments are done in groups of 8-10 students un…

Angļu valodas mācīšanās motivāciju ietekmējošie faktori vidējās izglītības iestādē, 5 un 9. klašu skolēniem
2019
ACTIVE LEARNING METHODS IN STUDIES: STUDENTS’ OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES
2021
Rapid changes in education and pedagogy are related not only to the global crisis caused by COVID-19, but also to other changes determined by globalization and technological convergence—labour mobility, changes in different professions and changes in teacher–student relations—that are also affected by intergenerational differences. Changes in the pedagogical paradigm, which are included in the content of the Paris Communiqué (2018) and outlined in many important educational development and planning documents, emphasise students’ transition from being mere recipients of information to being participants actively engaged with new information in a learning environment. Following the identifica…
Using Problem-focused Approach to Nurture Creativity and Entrepreneurship among Students
2015
Abstract This paper discusses the use of a problem-focused approach to nurture creativity and entrepreneurship among students in a school setting. The study sample consisted of three groups of students (age 16 years old) from three secondary schools in Malaysia. The participants consist of 25–35 students from each school (n=95). The data collection took place during three workshops, which were conducted using a problem-focused approach, with participants from each school. At the end of each workshop, participants were asked to fill in an electronic diary about their experience. The participants’ reflections after the first workshop were analysed to identify the use of a problem-focused appr…
Innovation practices in schools: The impact of different models of organization on the practice of Norwegian municipalities
2017
Services provided by primary schools have a significant impact on citizens’ living conditions. We need more knowledge of how innovation activities in primary schools should be organized and managed. This article addresses this gap by raising the following question: ‘Why do municipalities have different ways of organizing preventive work in primary schools and what impact do different organizational approaches have on professionals’ judgement and their decisions to call attention to children at risk, their response patterns and interdisciplinary/interagency cooperation?’ The qualitative exploration of these questions is based on in-depth interviews with head teachers and teachers in 10 Norw…
