An experiment to study the structure of the focal volume in apertured focusing systems
2001
We present a simple experiment, specifically designed for students of undergraduate optics courses, where the influence of an aperture stop position on the three-dimensional structure of the focal volume of focusing systems is studied. The experiment, which involves only simple optical elements, permits an undergraduate student to generate different focal structures by simply axially displacing the aperture stop.
Applied Intertemporal Optimization
2009
This textbook provides all tools required to easily solve intertemporal optimization problems in economics, finance, business administration and related disciplines. The focus of this textbook is on 'learning through examples' and gives a very quick access to all methods required by an undergraduate student, a PhD student and an experienced researcher who wants to explore new fields or confirm existing knowledge. Given that discrete and continuous time problems are given equal attention, insights gained in one area can be used for learning solutions methods more quickly in other contexts. This step-by-step approach is especially useful for the transition from deterministic to stochastic wor…

Gender differences in Italian STEM degree courses: a discrete-time competing-risks model
2020
In this paper, we highlight possible gender differences in performance of students attending Italian university STEM degree courses, controlling for sociodemographic and territorial variables. We used the micro-data from the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research database of the 2011-12 freshmen cohort enrolled at an Italian bachelor university degree course. The analysis was dealt with by fitting a discrete-time competing-risks model. Bachelor degree graduation, dropout, and change to non-STEM courses were considered as competing events. The aim is to highlight gender gaps in the student performance, and the STEM courses where this gap is more critical.
Reversal of Gender Disparity in Journalism Education- Study of Ghana Institute of Journalism
2017
Journalism has practically become a feminine profession across the world. To understand the root of the flow of women into the Journalism profession it is pertinent to begin at the university education level. Gallagher’s 1992 worldwide survey of female students in 83 journalism institutions reveals a significant increase in number of female students. Djerf-Pierre (2007) and others argue along Bourdieu’s conception of education as a form of social capital which empowers, enables and enhances women’s competitiveness in a pre-dominantly androgynous social arena. The study analyses 16 years of enrolment data of the Academic Affairs Unit of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), a leading Jour…
Teaching and Sexual Prejudices. New Training Needs
2013
Abstract This study focused on the future trainers’ attitude in respect of gender, sex and sexual orientation. Contrary to previous research studies, which associate to a greater knowledge a better attitude, our results shown that prejudices are still present even for graduate students. Therefore, it urges a reflection on a new teaching paradigm able to provide a plural gender identity vision. Training processes must be more than a mere intellectual education: a reflection on professional future.
How feedback provided by voluntary electronic quizzes affects learning outcomes of university students in large classes
2018
Abstract In view of the increasing number of university students attending large statistics classes as a requirement for their degree courses, the use of an online learning environment is indispensable for delivering immediate and frequent feedback. However, results of research on the value of technological tools and blended courses in various academic disciplines are not consistent and only point to minimal effects on academic achievement. To fill this gap, in this study, participation in optional electronic quizzes and its effects on exam grades in large statistics classes depending on gender and previous statistics- and mathematics-related abilities are investigated. Overall, participati…
Investigating elementary school students’ text-based argumentation with multiple online information resources
2020
In this study, we explored how elementary school students used multiple information resources in responding to a text-based argumentation task asking them to research a set of online texts in order to state and justify their stance on a controversial health-related issue. Results showed that most students took a stance that was consistent with the majority of the information resources that they read, that they mainly drew on more reliable resources in their written task products, and that they justified their stance by providing one or more supporting reasons. Students relied much more on copying and paraphrasing content from the online resources than on integrating information within and a…
Knowledge, Attitudes, and Smoking Behaviours among Physicians Specializing in Public Health: A Multicentre Study
2014
Background. Healthcare professionals have an important role to play both as advisers—influencing smoking cessation—and as role models. However, many of them continue to smoke. The aims of this study were to examine smoking prevalence, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours among four cohorts physicians specializing in public health, according to the Global Health Profession Students Survey (GHPSS) approach.Materials and Methods. A multicentre cross-sectional study was carried out in 24 Italian schools of public health. The survey was conducted between January and April 2012 and it was carried out a census of students in the selected schools for each years of course (from first to fourth year …
