Evaluation of interfacial stress transfer efficiency by coating fragmentation test

2007

Probabilistic model of coating fragmentation under uniaxial tensile loading is developed. Analytical expressions of the crack spacing evolution are obtained for small-strain and large-strain fragmentation regimes. The model is applied for coating and interface property identification of several thin brittle coating/polymer substrate systems. An estimate of the stress transfer length, derived from the fragmentation data, is found to correlate with the interfacial shear strength thus suggesting that both parameters reflect an intrinsic property related to the mechanical efficiency of coating/substrate interface.

Adsorbate-Induced Oxygen Vacancy Mobility in Ultrathin Oxide Films

Oxides at the nanometric scale show a behavior markedly different from that of their bulk counterparts. Ultrathin oxides grown on metals do not reach the full insulator regime, and they cannot decouple the electronic clouds of incoming adsorbates from that of the metal substrate. Although oxygen vacancies control the chemical and physical properties of ultrathin oxide films, the role of intrinsic defects has been overlooked so far. The concept of single atom catalysis offers maximum noble metal efficiency for the development of low-cost catalytic materials. Among possible applications are catalytic materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In the present review, recent efforts towards the fabrication of single atom catalysts on nanostructured ceria and their reactivity are discussed in the prospect of their employment as anode catalysts. Surfactant effect of Sb on the growth of Ag films on a sapphire substrate

It is shown that a very thin layer of Sb may be used as a surfactant to modify the growth of silver films on an insulating substrate. The conduction (percolation) current flowing through a dispersed Ag film appears at a significantly smaller thickness due to the change in the growth mode of silver islands. Some practical applications are indicated.

Substrate and atmosphere influence on oxygen p-doped graphene

Abstract The mechanisms responsible for p-type doping of substrate supported monolayer graphene (Gr) by thermal treatments in oxygen ambient have been investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), considering commonly employed dielectric substrates, such as SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 thin films grown on Si. While a high p-type doping (∼10 13  cm −2 ) is observed for Gr on SiO 2 , no significant doping is found for Gr samples on the Al 2 O 3 substrate, suggesting a key role of the Gr/SiO 2 interface states in the trapping of oxygen responsible for the Gr p-type doping. Dynamics of a Spreading Nanodroplet: A Molecular Dynamic Simulation

The spreading of polymer nanodroplets upon a sudden change from partial to complete wetting on an ideally flat and structureless solid substrate has been studied by molecular dynamic simulations using a coarse-grained bead-spring model of flexible macromolecules. Tanner's law for the growth of the lateral droplet radius {R(f) t 0.1 } is found to hold as long as the droplet does not disintegrate into individually moving chains. The data for the contact angle θ following from Tanner's law correspond to a dependence on time {θ(t) t -0.3 }. Structure of Rhodococcus erythropolis limonene-1,2-epoxide hydrolase reveals a novel active site

Epoxide hydrolases are essential for the processing of epoxide-containing compounds in detoxification or metabolism. The classic epoxide hydrolases have an alpha/beta hydrolase fold and act via a two-step reaction mechanism including an enzyme-substrate intermediate. We report here the structure of the limonene-1,2-epoxide hydrolase from Rhodococcus erythropolis, solved using single-wavelength anomalous dispersion from a selenomethionine-substituted protein and refined at 1.2 A resolution. Comprehensive analysis of a Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain extracellular serine protease VpSP37

Proteases play an important role in the field of tissue dissociation combined with regenerative medicine. During the years new sources of proteolytic enzymes have been studied including proteases from different marine organisms both eukaryotic and prokaryotic. Herein we have purified a secreted component of an isolate of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, with electrophoretic mobilities corresponding to 36 kDa, belonging to the serine proteases family.
