Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of layers of superconducting 2H-TaSe$_\textbf{2}$: Evidence for a zero bias anomaly in single layers

2012

We report a characterization of surfaces of the dichalcogenide TaSe$_2$ using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) at 150 mK. When the top layer has the 2H structure and the layer immediately below the 1T structure, we find a singular spatial dependence of the tunneling conductance below 1 K, changing from a zero bias peak on top of Se atoms to a gap in between Se atoms. The zero bias peak is additionally modulated by the commensurate $3a_0 \times 3a_0$ charge density wave of 2H-TaSe$_2$. Multilayers of 2H-TaSe$_2$ show a spatially homogeneous superconducting gap with a critical temperature also of 1 K. We discuss possible origins for the peculiar tunneling conductance in …

Magnetic impurities on superconducting Pb surfaces

2023

It has been predicted theoretically and found experimentally that magnetic impurities induce localized bound states within the superconducting energy gap, called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. Combining symmetry analysis with experimental findings provides a convincing argument for the energy splitting and distribution of the YSR peaks, but the full details of the electronic structure remain elusive and simple models with point scatterers lack the full orbital complexity required to meet this challenge. In this work we combine a Greens function based first-principles method, which incorporates a phenomenological parameterization of the superconducting state, with orbitally complex impurity …

Ray optics in flux avalanche propagation in superconducting films

2014

Experimental evidence of wave properties of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films is reported. Using magneto-optical imaging the propagation of dendrites across boundaries between a bare NbN film and areas coated by a Cu-layer was visualized, and it was found that the propagation is refracted in full quantitative agreement with Snell's law. For the studied film of 170 nm thickness and a 0.9 mkm thick metal layer, the refractive index was close to n=1.4. The origin of the refraction is believed to be caused by the dendrites propagating as an electromagnetic shock wave, similar to damped modes considered previously for normal metals. The analogy is justified by the large dissipat…

Simultaneous Noise and Impedance Fitting to Transition-Edge Sensor Data using Differential Evolution

2019

We discuss a robust method to simultaneously fit a complex model both to the complex impedance and the noise data for transition-edge sensors (TES). It is based on a differential evolution (DE) algorithm, providing accurate and repeatable results with only a small increase in computational cost compared to the standard least squares (LS) fitting method. Test fits are made using both DE and LS methods, and the results compared with previously determined best fits, with varying initial value deviations and limit ranges for the parameters. The robustness of DE is demonstrated with successful fits even when parameter limits up to a factor of 5 from the known values were used. It is shown that t…

Spin currents driven by the Higgs mode in magnetic superconductors

2019

Higgs mode in superconducting materials describes slowly-decaying oscillations of the order parameter amplitude. We demonstrate that in magnetic superconductors with built-in spin-splitting field Higgs mode is strongly coupled to the spin degrees of freedom allowing for the generation of time-dependent spin currents. Converting such spin currents to electric signals by spin-filtering elements provides a tool for the second-harmonic generation and the electrical detection of the Higgs mode generated by the external irradiation. The non-adiabatic spin torques generated by these spin currents allow for the magnetic detection of the Higgs mode by measuring the precession of magnetic moment in t…

Superconductivity induced by structural reorganization in the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

2020

Electron-doped and hole-doped superconducting cuprates exhibit a symmetric phase diagram as a function of doping. This symmetry is however only approximate. Indeed, electron-doped cuprates become superconductors only after a specific annealing process: This annealing affects the oxygen content by only a tiny amount, but has a dramatic impact on the electronic properties of the sample. Here we report the occurrence of superconductivity in oxygen-deficient Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films grown in an oxygen-free environment, after annealing in pure argon flow. As verified by x-ray diffraction, annealing induces an increase of the interlayer distance between CuO$_2$ planes in the crystal str…

Controlling magnetism through Ising superconductivity in magnetic van der Waals heterostructures

2022

Van der Waals heterostructures have risen as a tunable platform to combine different electronic orders, due to the flexibility in stacking different materials with competing symmetry broken states. Among them, van der Waals ferromagnets such as CrI3 and superconductors as NbSe2 provide a natural platform to engineer novel phenomena at ferromagnet-superconductor interfaces. In particular, NbSe2 is well known for hosting strong spin-orbit coupling effects that influence the properties of the superconducting state. Here we put forward a ferromagnet/NbSe2/ferromagnet heterostructure where the interplay between Ising superconductivity in NbSe2 and magnetism controls the magnetic alignment of the…

Flat bands and the physics of strongly correlated Fermi systems

2018

Some materials can have the dispersionless parts in their electronic spectra. These parts are usually called flat bands and generate the corps of unusual physical properties of such materials. These flat bands are induced by the condensation of fermionic quasiparticles, being very similar to the Bose condensation. The difference is that fermions to condense, the Fermi surface should change its topology, leading to violation of time-reversal (T) and particle-hole (C) symmetries. Thus, the famous Landau theory of Fermi liquids does not work for the systems with fermion condensate (FC) so that several experimentally observable anomalies have not been explained so far. Here we use FC approach t…

Zero-bias conductance peak in detached flakes of superconducting 2H-TaS$_2$ probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

2014

We report an anomalous tunneling conductance with a zero bias peak in flakes of superconducting 2H-TaS$_2$ detached through mechanical exfoliation. To explain the observed phenomenon, we construct a minimal model for a single unit cell layer of superconducting 2H-TaS$_2$ with a simplified 2D Fermi surface and sign-changing Cooper pair wavefunction induced by Coulomb repulsion. Superconductivity is induced in the central $\Gamma$ pocket, where it becomes nodal. We show that weak scattering at the nodal Fermi surface, produced by non-perturbative coupling between tip and sample, gives Andreev states that lead to a zero bias peak in the tunneling conductance. We suggest that reducing dimension…

Comment on the paper by D. Efremov and Yu.N. Ovchinnikov "Singular ground state of multiband inhomogeneous superconductors", Phys. Rev. B 99, 224508 …

2019

We show that the conclusion reported in Ref. 1, that there are no spontaneous magnetic fields in multiband superconductors that break time reversal symmetry, is incorrect. We demonstrate that the state proposed in Ref. 1 is not a solution of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the considered model. The reason is that in Ref. 1 one of the Ginzburg-Landau equations is neglected and substituted by the spurious zero current restriction. This restriction together with all of the Ginzburg-Landau equations leads to an overdetermined system which does not have a solution. This inconsistency invalidates all the results of the paper.
