Trait anxiety and parental child-rearing behavior: Support as a moderator variable?

1988

Abstract Based on central assumptions of the social support literature and on formulations concerning the construction of competence and consequence expectancies, a model for the interaction of maternal and paternal child-rearing behavior in the development of children's trait anxiety is presented. Hypotheses concerning this model are tested empirically; 160 boys and 169 girls (aged 12–14 years) responded to the “Erziehungsstil-Inventar” (“Child-Rearing Inventory”), which serves as a measure of child-rearing styles as perceived by the child, as well as to a German adaptation of the “State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children”. General relations between the variables were analyzed by means o…

Diagnostic algorithm for familial chylomicronemia syndrome

2016

International audience; Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disease that leads to severe hypertriglyceridemia often associated with recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. The recognition and correct diagnosis of the disease is challenging due to its rarity, and to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. Lipid experts, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pancreatologists, and general practitioners may encounter patients who potentially have FCS. Therefore, cooperation between experts and improved knowledge of FCS is essential in improving the diagnosis. Currently, a consensus on best practice for the diagnosis of FCS is lacking. Methods: Aiming to def…

Application of an intelligent study and research support system for clinical anatomy in a cooperation scenario

2008

Scientific research and teaching are strongly interrelated. A student should be educated both to the fundamentals of a discipline and to the research tasks as the future development of a discipline is entrusted to the students of today. Computer based tutoring systems already showed useful in pursuing the former target while the Intelligent Study and Research Support System developed at DINFO may be used to fulfill both in an integrated manner. This paper introduces the possible application of the ISRSS to training of Clinical Anatomy in a scenario of international cooperation among academic institutions.

The Differential Relations between Perceived Social Support and Rumination-Associated Goals

2013

In this study with N = 93 student participants, we employed a daily process approach to investigate sadness-associated rumination in daily life. Specifically, we examined whether the attainment of coping-related goals that people intend to achieve with their sadness-associated rumination were associated with changes in perceived social support. Moreover, we investigated the relations between sadness-related cognitive appraisals, goal pursuit and attainment, and ruminative process variables. Perceived social support was positively related to the attainment of resolution-focused goals, but not to understanding-focused goals, suggesting that social support is particularly associated with a fun…

Supporting bereaved people: a qualitative study on the experience of informal support providers, before and during the pandemic scenario

2023

The COVID-19 outbreak has further highlighted the need to strengthen support networks tosustain grieving people. However, we know very little about the experience of those who, because of their emotional connection with the bereaved person or of their social function, find themselves supporting people in grief. The current study aimed to analyze the experi-ence of grievers’informal support providers (relatives and friends, teachers, religious leaders, funeral providers, pharmacists, volunteers, and social service workers). 162 in-depth inter-views were collected (meanage¼42.3,SD¼14.9; women¼63.6%). Findings highlight twodifferent ways of talking about one’s experience and two different ways of…

Crowdboard: An Augmented Whiteboard to Support Large-Scale Co-Design

2013

Co-design efforts attempt to account for many diverse viewpoints. However, design teams lack support for meaningful real-time interaction with a large community of potential stakeholders. We present Crowdboard, a novel whiteboard system that enables many potential stakeholders to provide real-time input during early-stage design activities, such as concept mapping. Local design teams develop ideas on a standard whiteboard, which is augmented with annotations and comments from online participants. The system makes it possible for design teams to solicit real-time opinions and ideas from a community of people intrinsically motivated to shape the product/service.

Hume’s guillotine and intelligent technologies

2021

AbstractEmerging intelligent society shall change the way people are organised around their work and consequently also as a society. One approach to investigating intelligent systems and their social influence is information processing. Intelligence is information processing. However, factual and ethical information are different. Facts concern true vs. false, while ethics is about what should be done. David Hume recognised a fundamental problem in this respect, which is that facts can be used to derive values. His answer was negative, which is critical for developing intelligent ethical technologies. Hume’s problem is not crucial when values can be assigned to technologies, i.e. weak ethic…

Modelling swarm-intelligent systems for medical applications

2017

Modeling swarm intelligent systems has attracted attention of researchers over the last decade, as the attributes such as self-organization, self-regulation or collective behavior exhibited by the system entities while following a certain set of rules, can be implemented with the aim at investigating complexity of the problems that an individual would be unable to tackle in real world. In this keynote paper, meta-heuristics and paradigms of modeling swarm-intelligent systems will be discussed with respect to their application areas for medical purposes.

A DSS for Strategic Planning

2005

This chapter presents an innovative approach for assisting entrepreneurs in making long term capacity decisions in Advanced Manufacturing Systems (AMSs). AMSs require high investment costs in manufacturing equipment, human resources and technology knowledge. Such high investments together with the wideness and the variability of the competition scenario contribute to increase the perception of the risk for industrial entrepreneurs especially in SMEs. This problem could be approached by providing the entrepreneur with a Decision Support System (DSS) able to assist her/him in making long term capacity decision in AMS. The DSS proposed in this chapter allows the entrepreneur to plan its produc…
