Contribution of sinusoidal endothelial liver cells to liver fibrosis: expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 receptors and modulation of pla…
1993
Transforming growth factor-beta 1 is an important cytokine in the pathophysiology of liver fibrosis, stimulating the production of extracellular matrix. Whether this cytokine can also control the degradation of matrix proteins in liver cells has not been investigated. Because plasmin is an important protease for the degradation of matrix glycoproteins, we investigated whether sinusoidal endothelial liver cells could contribute to fibrosing liver disease through the modulation of plasmin-generating enzymes in response to transforming growth factor-beta 1. Sinusoidal endothelial cells from guinea pig liver were investigated in pure monolayer culture. Using 125I-labelled transforming growth fa…
Light trapping by plasmonic nanoparticles
2020
Abstract Metallic nanoparticles sustaining localized surface plasmon resonances are of great interest for enhancing light trapping in thin film photovoltaics. In this chapter, we explore the correlation between the structural and optical properties of self-assembled silver nanostructures fabricated by a solid-state dewetting process on various substrates relevant for silicon photovoltaics and later integrated into plasmonic back reflectors. Our study allows us to optimize the performance of nanostructures by identifying the fabrication conditions in which desirable circular and uniformly spaced nanoparticles are obtained. Second, we introduce a novel optoelectronic spectroscopic method that…
Plasmonic nanostructures for light trapping in photovoltaic
Metallic nanoparticles (NPs), sustaining localized surface plasmon resonances, are currently of great interest for enhancing light trapping in thin film solar cells. To be directly applicable in the photovoltaic industry, the NPs fabrication needs to be simple, reliable, low-cost and scalable. As such, self-assembly processes are most commonly used, and Ag is the preferred material, due to its high radiative efficiency and low imaginary permittivity. After exploring the correlation between structural and optical properties of Ag NPs fabricated by solid- state dewetting process on various substrates, we identified the fabrication conditions in which desirable NPs are obtained, but we also e…

Spatial distribution of two maternal messengers encoding two sea urchin cell surface proteins
1993
We have localized, byin situ hybridization, two messengers, called bepl and bep4 (butanol extracted proteins), coding for cell surface proteins, involved in cell interaction, in sections of eggs of the sea urchinP. lividus. These maternal RNAs are spatially distributed in a gradient with a maximum at one pole of the egg. These results represent the first demonstration of the existence of a gradient of informational molecules in the sea urchin egg,i.e., the biological material for which the gradient theory was first proposed.

Abstract. An essential part of the collaborative research project H2STORE (hydrogen to store), which is funded by the German government, was a comparison of various analytical methods for characterizing reservoir sandstones from different stratigraphic units. In this context Permian, Triassic and Tertiary reservoir sandstones were analysed. Rock core materials, provided by RWE Gasspeicher GmbH (Dortmund, Germany), GDF Suez E&P Deutschland GmbH (Lingen, Germany), E.ON Gas Storage GmbH (Essen, Germany) and RAG Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft (Vienna, Austria), were processed by different laboratory techniques; thin sections were prepared, rock fragments were crushed and cubes of …

Amphiphilic derivatives of a polyaspartamide: their aggregation and solubilization ability.Tensiometric and spectrophotometric studies
2006
The self-aggregation and solubilization capability of a series of amphiphilic copolymers obtained by derivatisation of polymeric chain of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) with polyethylene glycols (PEG, being different molecular weight 2000 or 5000 Da, PEG2000 and PEG5000, respectively) and/or hexadecylamine alkyl chain (C16), namely PHEA–PEG2000, PHEA–PEG5000, PHEA–C16, PHEA–PEG2000–C16 and PHEA–PEG5000–C16, have been evidenced by performing systematic tensiometric and spectrophotometric studies. All measurements have been performed at 25.0 °C over a wide copolymer concentration range. The tensiometric results have shown that, for all copolymers studied, the surface tension…
