The 3D modelling of musive surfaces for a monitoring protocol

2022

In this paper the use of three-dimensional digital methodology for scanning musive surfaces was investigated within the restoration intervention on a f…

Deformation

2020

In the continuous model of a solid object, which is ideally considered composed of such material points that each one of them is surrounded by a dense neighbourhood fully occupied by other points, the deformation is a variation carried out by a transformation, which does not preserve isometry. Deformations differ from displacements caused by rigid motions. For a closed boundary curve in the three-dimensional space, Plateau wondered what surfaces would minimize the potential surface energy. Deformation was held to underlie the evolution of biological forms, described by the “Cartesian transformations”, or the interpolation function of landmarks covariation over a thin-plate spline, the perce…

Picture

2020

Pictures are a presentation whose structure is decomposable into a surface, an arrangement of markings, the appearance of something in front of, before or behind the surface, the reference to a scene of the real or a possible world, whose aspects and concrete or abstract states of affairs are displayed by the appearance. Pictures are a kind of markings, namely patterns perceived on a surface, which do not yet convey information about it. Markings depend on surfaces. No marking exists without a surface, while the opposite is true. There is a variety of markings according to the technique and the tools chosen to produce them. Surfaces serve as a medium either as a support or as that which aff…

On the automorphism group of some K3 surfaces with Picard number two

2005

We investigate properties of some K3 surfaces with Picard number two. In particular, we show that several of them have an infinite cyclic group of automorphisms. We de- scribe projective models of a few of these surfaces.

Oral and Vaginal Epithelial Cell Lines Bind and Transfer Cell-Free Infectious HIV-1 to Permissive Cells but Are Not Productively Infected

2014

The majority of HIV-1 infections worldwide are acquired via mucosal surfaces. However, unlike the vaginal mucosa, the issue of whether the oral mucosa can act as a portal of entry for HIV-1 infection remains controversial. To address potential differences with regard to the fate of HIV-1 after exposure to oral and vaginal epithelium, we utilized two epithelial cell lines representative of buccal (TR146) and pharyngeal (FaDu) sites of the oral cavity and compared them with a cell line derived from vaginal epithelium (A431) in order to determine (i) HIV-1 receptor gene and protein expression, (ii) whether HIV-1 genome integration into epithelial cells occurs, (iii) whether productive viral in…

Qualitative characterisation of effective interactions of charged spheres on different levels of organisation using Alexander’s renormalised charge a…

2005

Abstract Effective interactions are conveniently determined from experimental or numerical data by fitting a Debye–Huckel potential with an effective charge Z ∗ and an effective electrolyte concentration c ∗ as free parameters. In this contribution we numerically solved the Poisson–Boltzmann equation to obtain the so-called renormalised charge Z PBC ∗ . For sufficiently large bare charge Z one finds a saturation of Z ∗ which scales as Z ∗ = A a / λ B , where a is the particle radius, λ B the Bjerrum length and A a proportionality factor of order (8–10). The saturation value increases with increased total micro-ion concentration and shows a shallow minimum as a function of packing fraction. …

Effect of several electrolytes on the rheopectic behaviour of concentrated soy lecithin dispersions

2005

Abstract Concentrated dispersions of soy lecithin (60 g/L) prepared by sonication-freezing–unfreezing method show a non-newtonian behaviour and a significant rheopexy. Shear stress versus shear rate plots shows a loop hysteresis area, which have been studied in soy lecithin dispersions prepared with aqueous solutions of various electrolytes (NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and AlCl3) with concentrations in the range 10−5 to 10−2 mol/L. Also we have studied the effect of different pH on soy lecithin dispersions. The results have revealed a very sensitive influence of nature, valence and concentration of the respective cations and the pH value on the loop hysteresis area values. It seems to indicate that …

Analysis of stamping performances of dual phase steels: A multi-objective approach to reduce springback and thinning failure

2009

The industrial interest on light weight components has contributed in the last years to a significant research effort on new materials able to guarantee high mechanical properties, good formability and reasonable costs together with reduced weights when compared to traditional mild steels. Among such materials advanced high strength steels (AHSS) such as transformations induced plasticity (TRIP) and dual phase (DP), and light weight alloys proved their usefulness in stamping of automotive components. As AHSS are concerned, one of the main drawbacks is related to springback occurrence. Many aspects have to be taken into account when springback reduction is investigated: material behavior iss…

Testing jet geometries and disc-jet coupling in the neutron star LMXB 4U 0614 + 091 with the internal shocks model

2020

Multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions of Low Mass X-ray Binaries in the hard state are determined by the emission from a jet, for frequencies up to mid-infrared, and emission from the accretion flow in the optical to X-ray range. In the last years, the flat radio-to-mid-IR spectra of Black Hole (BH) X-ray binaries was described using the internal shocks model, which assumes that the fluctuations in the velocity of the ejecta along the jet are driven by the fluctuations in the accretion flow, described by the X-ray Power Density Spectrum (PDS). In this work we attempt to apply this model for the first time to a Neutron Star (NS) LMXB, i.e. 4U 0614+091. We used the multi-wavelength d…

Monitoring displacements of an earthen dam using GNSS and remote sensing

2014

This paper shows the results of a scientific research in which a GNSS continuous monitoring system for earth-dam deformations has been developed, then, deformations have been related with reservoir water surface and level. The experiment was conducted near Bivona (Sicily, Italy), on the Castello dam (Magazzolo Lake). On the top of the dam three control points were placed and three GNSS permanent stations were installed. The three stations continuously transmitted data to the control centre of the University of Palermo. The former has been determined using freely available satellite data (specifically Landsat 7 SLC-Off) collected during the whole study period (DOYs 101 to 348 2011). Issues r…
