Transposition of the great arteries and aortopulmonary window in the same patient: clinical report and follow-up.
2002
Trasnposition of great arteries (TGA) Has been reported in combination with several congenital defects. Only one case of TGA has been described in association with aortopulmonary window (APW).

ELS live surgery: a developing story
2019
Since 2015, the European Laryngological Society (ELS) has organized on a yearly basis the European Laryngological Live Surgery Broadcast. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the increasing worldwide audience. The number of individual computers logged in, number of estimated audience, and number of countries with an active audience were calculated and compared to the numbers in 2015. In 2018, 19 live interventions were performed in three parallel sessions. The surgeons worked in 10 departments in 8 different countries. The number of individual computers logged in increased from 1000 in 2015 to 16000 in 2018. The estimated audience increased from 3000 to 32000 visitors. The number of cou…
Globalization in Pediatric Surgical Training: The Benefit of an International Fellowship in a Low-to-Middle-Income Country Academic Hospital.
2021
Abstract Objective A relative oversupply of pediatric surgeons led to increasing difficulties in surgical training in high-income countries (HIC), popularizing international fellowships in low-to-middle–income countries (LMIC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of an international fellowship in an LMIC for the training of pediatric surgery trainees from HICs. Methods We retrospectively reviewed and compared the prospectively maintained surgical logbooks of international pediatric surgical trainees who completed a fellowship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in the last 10 years. We analyzed the number of surgeries, type of involvement, and level of supervision in t…
Transperitoneal vs retroperitoneal minimally invasive partial nephrectomy: comparison of perioperative outcomes and functional follow-up in a large m…
2020
Abstract Background Aim of this study was to evaluate and compare perioperative outcomes of transperitoneal (TP) and retroperitoneal (TR) approaches in a multi-institutional cohort of minimally invasive partial nephrectomy (MI-PN). Material and methods All consecutive patients undergone MI-PN for clinical T1 renal tumors at 26 Italian centers (RECORd2 project) between 01/2013 and 12/2016 were evaluated, collecting the pre-, intra-, and postoperative data. The patients were then stratified according to the surgical approach, TP or RP. A 1:1 propensity score (PS) matching was performed to obtain homogeneous cohorts, considering the age, gender, baseline eGFR, surgical indication, clinical dia…
Robotic Hysterectomy in Severely Obese Patients With Endometrial Cancer: A Multicenter Study
2015
Abstract Study Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the surgical and oncologic outcomes of robotic hysterectomy with or without or less pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomy in severely obese patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 40 kg/m 2 ) with endometrial cancer. Material and Methods Between August 2010 and November 2014, patients with histologically confirmed endometrial cancer and BMI ≥40 kg/m 2 were deemed eligible for the study and underwent RH with or without pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomy. Results Seventy patients were divided into 3 groups according to their BMI: group A, BMI between 40 and 45 kg/m 2 (50 patients); group B, BMI between 45 and 50 kg/m 2 (10 patients); and gro…
Novel Device for Endoluminal Esophageal Atresia Repair: First-in-Human Experience
2021
Thoracoscopic esophageal atresia (EA) repair affords many benefits to the patient; however, intracorporeal suturing of the anastomosis is technically challenging. Esophageal magnetic compression anastomosis (EMCA) is a compelling option for endoluminal EA repair, but available EMCA devices have prohibitive rates of recalcitrant stricture. Connect-EA is a new endoluminal EMCA device system that employs 2 magnetic anchors with a unique mating geometry designed to reliably create a robust anastomosis and decrease rates of leak and stricture. We describe our first-in-human experience with this novel endoluminal device for staged EA repair in 3 patients (Gross type A, B, and C) at high risk for …
An experimental study on magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets.
2019
Abstract Introduction Fashioning a patent, watertight anastomosis in patients with esophageal atresia is a challenging task in pediatric surgery, particularly when performed under tension. A reproducible suture-less alternative would decrease operative time. We evaluated magnetic esophageal compression anastomoses in a novel bypass-loop swine model. Methods Eight-week-old piglets underwent thoracotomy to mobilize the esophagus at the carina to create a U-shaped loop. Custom-made 8 mm diameter Neodymium Magnets were inserted into the esophagus proximal and distal to the loop, then mated side-to-side at the future anastomosis site. Pigs were observed for 8 (n = 4), 10 (n = 6), and 12 (n = 2) …
Surgical sphincter saving approach and topical nifedipine for chronic anal fissure with hypertonic internal anal sphincter
2020
PURPOSE The role of augmented internal anal sphincter (IAS) tone in the genesis of posterior chronic anal fissure (CAPF) is still unknown. Lateral internal sphincterotomy is the most employed surgical procedure, nevertheless it is burdened by high risk post-operative anal incontinence. The aim of our study is to evaluate results of sphincter saving procedure with post-operative pharmacological sphincterotomy for patients affected by CAPF with IAS hypertonia. Methods: We enrolled 30 patients, undergone fissurectomy and anoplasty with V-Y cutaneous flap advancement; all patients received topical administration of nifedipine 0.3% and lidocaine 1.5% ointment-based therapy before and for 15 days…
