A Monitoring Framework Exploiting the Synergy between Actual and Virtual Wireless Sensors
2006
This paper describes a framework that allows realistic monitoring of a wireless sensor network in order to assess its behavior before actually deploying all the nodes. Designing a wireless sensor network for a specific application typically involves a preliminary phase of simulations that rely on specialized software, whose behavior does not necessarily reproduce what will be experienced by an actual network. On the other hand, delaying the test phase until deployment may not be advisable due to unreasonable costs. This paper suggests the adoption of a hybrid approach that involves coupling an actual wireless sensor network composed of a minimal set of actual nodes with a simulated one; we …
INTEGRATED SURVEYING AND MODELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE DOCUMENTATION AND VISUALIZATION OF THREE ANCIENT HOUSES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA
2015
The paper is focused on the layout and testing of a workflow for the documentation of archeological remains, addressed to the study, visualization and information data input. Topographic, laser scanning and photogrammetric data have been used to build up 3D textured models of three ancient houses built in Sicily and in Tunisia in the Hellenistic and Roman age. 3D models have been used to extract conventional representations (plans and sections), analyze the geometric and proportional features and propose a virtual reconstruction of the original layout. The final step of the research work has been addressed to the creation of a web-based tools for the visualization of the models addressed to…
Multimodal virtual navigation of a cultural heritage site: The medieval ceiling of Steri in Palermo
2009
The advance of information technology has enabled in recent years new fruition scenarios for cultural heritage sites. Multidisciplinary approaches integrate survey techniques with multimodal interfaces to allow enhanced fruition for larger group of users. In this paper we propose a multimodal interface to a virtual representation of a medieval ceiling, built in the XIV century, which covers the “Sala Magna” of Steri, the historical headquarters of the University of Palermo, in Italy. This research deals with the definition of a process for the integration of surveying techniques, modelling processes and communication technologies for the documentation of such artifacts. This is a two-stage …
Surveying, modeling and communication techniques for the documentation of medieval wooden painted ceilings in the Mediterranean area
2008
Wooden painted ceilings of the Mediterranean area in the middle age have their origin in the islamic culture and were then spread in the countries under the dominion of the Arabs; some of the surviving ceilings are now located in Sicily and Spain. In the historic centre of Palermo two well preserved medieval ceilings are still surviving; the first, built in the XII century, is located in the Palatine chapel; the second one, built in the XIV century covers the “Sala Magna” in the Steri of Palermo. The research, focused on the ceiling in the Steri, deals with the definition of a process for the integration of surveying techniques (photogrammetry, laser scanning), modelling processes and commu…
Mura Pregne: una revisione dei dati archeologici e una ricostruzione virtuale del sito
2018
One of the most interesting long-term settlements in Sicily is Mura Pregne (Palermo). The site (400 m a.s.l.) is located on the northern coast of Sicily, between the last northwestern outcrops of the Madonie and the isolated relief of Monte San Calogero, in a close-up position on the Torto river valley. The earliest phases of the settlement are scarcely known and difcult to assess in their actual consistency, because a quarry has distorted the original appearance of the site. In the absence of new excavations, the purpose of this contribution is to offer a topographic description of the diferent areas, together with new archaeological considerations, based on feld survey and aerial photo an…
Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese
2016
2014
The aim of the Cignana Project (Agrigento, Sicily) is to analyse the geographic context of a villa of imperial age, where a systematic archaeological survey has carried out since 2007, in order to detect the ancient settlements from prehistoric to medieval times. The archaeological data are analyzed by GIS methodologies (3D, supply basins, shortest path analysis), to understand intervisibility and interrelationship between sites of different rank, and finally to try and find out the resources available during the different periods.
Soknopaiou Nesos project 2019. Il survey 3D e il survey ceramologico
2020
In 2019, in the framework of the Soknopaiou Nesos Project (University of the Salento, Lecce, Italy), two research teams began a multidisciplinary survey atDime es-Seba. One team conducted a 3D survey with a view to generating a digital model of the entire site using Camera Scanner-based techniques while the other undertook a survey in order to obtain knowledge of the spatial and chronological development of the settlement. The survey aims to create a Topographical Atlas which will support the acquisition of evidence for addressing specific archaeological problems concerning the city. The project will also contribute to the protection, conservation and monitoring of the site.
ANFORE E CERAMICHE COMUNI E DA FUOCO DA THERMAE HIMERAEAE (SICILIA) E DAL SUO HINTERLAND
2014
This report, part of a wider project involving the ancient landscapes of Himera and Thermae, presents the archaeological and archaeometric results on Late Roman amphorae and coarse/cooking wares from Termini Imerese. The aim is also to illustrate the distribution of the same types of Roman pottery in the hinterland of Thermae, where the Dept. of Cultural Heritage of Palermo University has carried out intensive surveys (from 1982, published from 1988 until 2009). A good documentation of African amphorae, coarse/cooking wares, produced both in Byzacena and Zeugitana, and also local amphorae and coarse/cooking wares and Pantellerian ware, have been found both in Thermae and in the hinterland, …
