Versatile supramolecular self-assembly : Part II. Network formation and magnetic behaviour of copper(ii) malonate anions in ammonium derivatives
2006
Five new metal–organic compounds of formula An[Cu(mal)2(H2O)m] (A being an amine cation and H2mal = malonic acid) have been structurally and magnetically characterized. The crystal structure of these compounds consists of an alternation of malonate-containing copper(II) anionic and amine cationic layers. Depending on the amine cation, the bis(malonate)cuprate(II) units can be connected to other units through carboxylate bridges resulting in anionic networks which exhibit different topologies: monomers (2 and 5), layers (3 and 4) and three-dimensional structures (1). Hydrogen bonding plays an important role in the self-assembling of metal–organic compounds and how the size of the amine catio…
Rhenium(IV) cyanate complexes: Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of NBu4[ReBr4(OCN)(DMF)] and (NBu4)2[ReBr(OCN)2(NCO)3]
2006
Abstract Two new rhenium(IV) mononuclear compounds of formula NBu4[ReBr4(OCN)(DMF)] (1) and (NBu4)2[ReBr(OCN)2(NCO)3] (2) (NBu4 = tetrabutylammonium cation, OCN = O-bonded cyanate anion, NCO = N-bonded cyanate anion and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group P21/n, whereas 2 crystallizes in the triclinic one with P 1 ¯ as space group. In both complexes the rhenium atom is six-coordinated, in 1 by four Br atoms in the equatorial plane, and two trans-oxygen atoms, one of a DMF molecule and another one from a cyanato group, while in 2 by one brom…
Magnetostructural correlations in parallel square-planar halo-bridged copper(II) dimers. Part II: Structure and magnetic properties of [Cu2(terpy)2Br…
1987
Abstract The crystal and molecular structure of bis-μ- bromo-bis [(2,2′:6′,2″ - terpyridyl) copper (II) ] bis (hexafluorophosphate) has been determined from three dimensional single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, collected by counter techniques. The blue crystals belong to the monoclinic system, space group P21/a, with four formula units in a unit cell of dimensions a=20.40(2), b=13.35(2), c=6.453(8) A and β=97.74(9)°. The structure was solved using a refinement procedure and starting with the atomic positions of the isostructural complex [Cu(terpy)- Cl]2(PF6)2, to final agreement factors R=0.071 (Rw=0.077). The structure consists of dimeric molecules bridged by two bromine atoms. The coor…
Magnetism in Polyoxometalates: Anisotropic Exchange Interactions in the Co Moiety of [Co3W(D2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]12−—A Magnetic and Inelastic Neutron Scatt…
2002
The ground-state properties of a Co moiety encapsulated in a polyoxometalate anion were investigated by combining measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and low-temperature magnetization with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated polycrystalline sample of Na12[Co3W(D2O)2(ZnW9O34)2]⋅40 D2O (Co3). The ferromagnetic Co3O14 cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated CoII ions. According to the single-ion anisotropy and spin–orbit coupling of the octahedral CoII ions, the appropriate exchange Hamiltonian to describe the ground-state properties of the Co3 spin cluster is anisotropic and is expressed as ℋ=−2Σ(JŜ1αŜ2α+JŜ2αŜ3α), w…
Magnetic LB films based upon polyoxometalate clusters and single molecule nanomagnets
1999
Abstract By using the adsorption properties of polyoxometalates such as the ferromagnetic cluster [Co 4 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ] 10− ) along a positively charged monolayer, we have prepared well organized monolayers of the magnetic polyanions. A similar procedure allowed us to obtain Langmuir-Blodgett films (LB films) based on Mn 12 clusters which show a marked hysteresis
Canted Antiferromagnetism on Rectangular Layers of Fe2+ in Polymorphic CaFeSeO
2017
From stoichiometric amounts of CaO, Fe, and Se, pure powders and single crystals of quaternary Ca[FeSe2/2O2/2]∞2 can be obtained by solid-state reaction and self-flux growth, respectively. The as-synthesized compound exhibits a polymorphic crystal structure, where the two modifications have different stacking sequences of [FeSe2/2O2/2]2−∞2 layers. The two polymorphs have similar unit cells but different crystal symmetries (Cmc21 and Pnma), of which the former is non-centrosymmetric. Fe is divalent (d6) and high-spin, as proven by X-ray spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and powder neutron diffraction data. The latter two, in combination with magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data…
A Diferrous Single‐Molecule Magnet
2007
The diferrous complex [Fe2(acpypentO)(NCO)3] (1),(acpypentO– = the anion of 1,5-bis[2-pyridyl(1-ethylimino)]pentane-3-ol) was studied by spectroscopic (dual-mode X-band EPR and 57Fe-Mossbauer) and magnetic (AC magnetic susceptibility) techniques. Complex 1 (A. K. Boudalis et al., Inorg. Chem.2004, 43, 1574) was previously shown to exhibit an intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling with important single-ion anisotropies with marked differences in the single-ion electronic parameters of the two iron sites. In this contribution, additional studies are carried out to probe its dynamic magnetic properties. Mossbauer spectra recorded at liquid helium temperatures indicate slow paramagnetic relaxati…
Fully interlocked three-dimensional molecular scaffolding: Synthesis, X-ray structure, magnetic and nitrogen sorption study
2012
Abstract The reaction of M(NO3)2·6H2O (M = Co or Ni), N,N-diethyl-ethylenediamine (deen) and sodium dicyanamide (dca) afforded the complex {[M(deen)(μ1,5-dca)2]}n (where for 1, M = Co and for 2, M = Ni). The complexes have been characterized structurally and magnetically. X-ray analysis reveals that the isomorphous complexes 1 and 2 feature similar infinite three-dimensional scaffolding-like structure to generate the fascinating molecular assembly. All the {N(CN)2}− ligands present in the complexes are connected to the symmetry related metal centers in an end-to-end fashion through bent {N(CN)2}− ligands. The zigzag linkage propagates parallel to three crystallographic axes to form a fully …
Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the chiral iron(II) chain [Fe(bpym)(NCS)2]n (bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine)
1996
Abstract The iron(II) compound of formula [Fe(bpym)(NCS)2]n (bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the tetragonal P41 (No. 76) and P43 space groups, a = 8.849(2), c=16.486(3) A , V=1290.9(5) A 3 , Z=4, D c =1.699 g cm −3 , M r =330.2, F(000)=664, λ( Mo K α)=0.71073 A , μ( Mo K α)=14.8 cm −1 and T=295 K. A total of 2449 reflections was collected over the range 3≤2ϑ≤55°; of these, 1657 were unique and 1321 were considered as observed (13σ(I)) and used in the structural analysis. The final R and Rw residuals were 0.027 and 0.026, respectively. The structure is made up of chiral (Δ and Λ enantiomers c…
Thermodynamics of the spin transition in [FexZn1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH
1992
Abstract With a new type of calorimeter we reinvestigated the specific heat Cp of the mixed crystals [FexZni1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH in the temperature range from 15 to 300 K. On the basis of a phenomenological thermodynamic model the anomaly in the Cp(T) curve of the mixed crystal (x = 0.73) can be quantitatively described as a result of the spin transition (1A1(low spin, LS) → 5T2(high spin, HS)). The parameters of the Gibbs free energy were independently derived from the temperature dependence of the HS fraction γ in [FexZn1−x(2-pic)3]Cl2 · EtOH. The pure iron complex (x = 1) exhibits a two-step spin transition. In the temperature range between the two steps the entropy obtained from the C…
