Magnetization and magnetoresistive response of LiMn2O4 near the charge ordering transition

We report magnetization and magnetoresistance studies of the geometrically frustrated spinel compound LiMn2O4 near its charge ordering temperature. The effect of a 7 T magnetic field is to very slightly shift the transition in the resistivity to lower temperatures resulting in large negative magnetoresistance with significant hysteresis. This hysteresis is not reflected in the magnetization. These observations are compared with what is found in the colossal magnetoresistance and charge ordering perovskite manganese oxides. The manner in which geometric frustration influences the coupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom is examined.

Effects of different types of preparatory information on attitudes toward hypnosis

This paper examines how attitudes of initially reluctant subjects towards hypnosis are influenced by three different approaches to introducing the topic. Participants (N = 90) were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: minimal information, cognitive-behavioural information and trance information. All three groups showed positive changes in attitudes toward hypnosis. Contrary to our expectations, positive attitudinal changes were not diminished for subjects exposed to trance information. Groups given trance and cognitive-behavioural explanations demonstrated significantly greater collaboration compared to the control group. No differences in hypnotic suggestibility were obtained.…

Microscopic origin of magnetic anisotropy in martensitic Ni2MnGa

The microscopic origin of magnetic anisotropy in the shape memory alloy Ni${}_{2}$MnGa is investigated by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in transmission mode. Field- and angle-dependent dichroism spectra of epitaxial Ni${}_{2}$MnGa(101)/MgO(001) films reveal pronounced differences for magnetization aligned parallel and perpendicular to the film plane. These differences are related to an anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment in agreement with the observed out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The Peculiar Physical Properties of Nanosized Ferroics (Nanoferroics)

This Chapter contains the experimental facts about size effects in nanoferroics. They include ferroelectric, ferroelastic, magnetic and multiferroic nanostructured materials. The main peculiar feature of nanoferroics is the geometric confinement originating from their surfaces and interfaces. This is in contrast to the ordinary bulk ferroics, where the sample surface plays a minor role. In particular, in nanoferroics, the surface generates the physical properties gradients in the normal (to the surface) direction. Abstract The X-ray structures and magnetic properties of a iron(III) linear chain and a honeycomb-like layered iron(III)-nickel(II) cyanide-bridged compound are reported. The former contains alternating iron sites and unexpected ferromagnetic behaviour, justified on the basis of the axial distortion from regular octahedral geometry of one of the iron ions. The latter is metamagnetic with ferromagnetic intralayers and antiferromagnetic interlayers interactions with a Neel temperature, TN= 7.7 K. The field-induced transition from an antiferro- to a ferromagnetic state takes place at Hc= 5000 G. Current density maps, magnetizability, and nuclear magnetic shielding tensors of bis-heteropentalenes. III. Thieno-thiophene isomers

Near Hartree–Fock values of the magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic shielding of bis-heteropentalenes consisting of two thiophene units ([2,3-b], [3,2-b], [3,4-b], and [3,4-c] isomers) have been estimated via computational schemes relying on continuous transformation of the origin of the current density within the coupled Hartree–Fock approximation and extended gaugeless Gaussian basis sets. A stable oxoverdazyl free radical: Structural and magnetic characterization

Abstract The structure and magnetic properties (susceptibility and ESR) of the stable oxoverdazyl free radical 6-(4-acetamidophenyl)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2,4-dimethyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazin-3(2H)-one are presented. The crystal structure consists of chains of parallel planar molecules running along the b-axis. These chains are formed by dimers with a ring-over-bond overlap and a significant offset between dimers, although with similar inter- and intradimer distances. The susceptibility measurements show that this compound is an S = 1/2 paramagnet with weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Spin crossover in a tetranuclear Cr(III)-Fe(III)3 complex

2004

A novel heteronuclear exchange-coupled complex [Cr I I I {(CN)Fe I I I -( 5 L)} 3 (CN) 3 ] containing a pentadentate blocking ligand 5 L was synthesized. The X-ray structure shows that a meridional isomer applies with inequivalent Fe I I I centers. The complex exhibits a thermally induced spin crossover along with the exchange coupling. Mossbauer spectra indicate a spin transition between S = ½ and S = 5/2 states although a considerable amount of Fe I I I centers stays high-spin at T = 6 K. The magnetization, the magnetic susceptibility, and the Mossbauer data were fitted in one run with a spin crossover model taking into account exchange interactions among all metal centers.

Magnetic properties of six-coordinated high-spin cobalt(II) complexes: Theoretical background and its application

Abstract In this contribution we study and analyse the influence of the different parameters involved in the magnetic susceptibility of six-coordinated high-spin Co(II) complexes. We propose an empirical expression to fit the magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline samples of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with an axial distortion, the variable parameters being Δ (axial distortion), α (orbital reduction factor) and λ (spin–orbit coupling). This expression avoids solving the 12 × 12 matrix associated to the distortion of the 4 T 1g term.
