Dynamics of Ising spin glasses far below the lower critical dimension: The one-dimensional case and small clusters

1985

The Glauber model is studied for symmetric distributions (±J and gaussian) of the nearest-neighbour interactionJ, including a magnetic field. For small clusters of spins (closed rings ofN bonds, withN≦7) the complex magnetic susceptibility χ(ω) and the time-dependent remanent magnetizationm(t) are found exactly for given bond configurations {Jij} by diagonalization of the Liouville operator; apart from the ±J model, the average over {Jij} must be done numerically by simple random sampling Monte Carlo. Nevertheless our accuracy is much better than corresponding dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, even if one considers the extrapolation toN→∞.

Magnetic transitions in double perovskiteSr2FeRe1−xSbxO6(0⩽x⩽0.9)

2006

The double perovskites ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}\mathrm{Fe}M{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ $(M=\mathrm{Re},\mathrm{Mo})$ belong to the important class of half-metallic magnetic materials. In this study we explore the effect of replacing the electronic $5d$ buffer element Re with variable valency by the main group element Sb with fixed valency. X-ray diffraction reveals ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{FeRe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{x}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ $(0lxl0.9)$ to crystallize without antisite disorder in the tetragonally distorted perovskite structure (space group $I4∕mmm$). The ferrimagnetic behavior of the parent compound ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{FeReO}}_{6}$ changes to antiferromagnetic upon Sb subst…

Energy levels of a quantum ring in a lateral electric field

2002

Abstract The electronic states of a semiconductor quantum ring (QR) under an applied lateral electric field are theoretically investigated and compared with those of a quantum disk of the same size. The eigenstates and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are obtained from a direct matrix diagonalization scheme. Numerical calculations are performed for a hard-wall confinement potential and the electronic states are obtained as a function of the electric field and the ratio r2/r1, where r2 (r1) is the outer (inner) radius of the ring. The effects of decreasing symmetry and mixing on the energy levels and wave functions due to the applied electric field are also studied. The direct optical absorpti…

A novel arousal-based individual screening reveals susceptibility and resilience to PTSD-like phenotypes in mice

2021

Translational animal models for studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are valuable for elucidating the poorly understood neurobiology of this neuropsychiatric disorder. These models should encompass crucial features, including persistence of PTSD-like phenotypes triggered after exposure to a single traumatic event, trauma susceptibility/resilience and predictive validity. Here we propose a novel arousal-based individual screening (AIS) model that recapitulates all these features. The AIS model was designed by coupling the traumatization (24 h restraint) of C57BL/6 J mice with a novel individual screening. This screening consists of z-normalization of post-trauma changes in startle …

Traffic-related pollutants in roadside soils of different countries in Europe and Asia

2015

We investigated the magnetic and chemical properties of the roadside soil samples collected from five European and Asian countries. Spots in which cars slowed down and/or accelerated due to the traffic organization (speed limits, junctions, and traffic lights) were selected for sampling. Apart from the Zabrze site (Poland), the magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal contents decreased with increasing distance from the road edge. The highest mass-specific magnetic susceptibility values (χ) were observed in the samples collected from Mumbai (India) and Zabrze (Poland). Moreover, the high contents of Fe, Ni, Mn, and Co were observed in Mumbai, whereas in Zabrze, all the examined elements demo…

Geochemical records of limestone façades exposed to urban atmospheric contamination as monitoring tools?

2008

International audience; Magnetic susceptibility, surface rock soiling, elemental composition and lead isotope ratios were measured in surface stone samples collected at different heights of a late 19th century building in Dijon, France. We targeted four limestone facades that differ in orientation and proximity to car traffic. It seems that zinc, copper, sulphur and cadmium are present as diffuse pollutants in urban atmosphere, at least at the scale of the building studied. In contrast, lead and arsenic exhibit point sources: automotive traffic and past coal-burning fly-ash emissions; both coherent with lead isotopic composition measurements. Parameter variations primarily result from expos…

Potentially toxic elements in fen peatland soils located near lignite-fired power plants in Central Poland

2021

Abstract The Grojec Valley (GV) peatland area in Central Poland is located close to lignite-fired power plants, which could be sources of potentially toxic elements (PTE). The aims of this study are: (1) to determine the effect of the lignite-fired power plants on soil pollution, (2) to evaluate pollution indices and magnetic susceptibility methods for determining the origin and distribution of PTE in soils, and (3) to demonstrate the importance of appropriate geochemical background (GB) selection for pollution studies in peatland soils. In order to comprehensively assess the soil pollution, four pollution indices (calculated using various types of GBs), and the mass-specific magnetic susce…

Characteristics of current roadside pollution using test-monitoring plots

2014

Abstract The aim of the study was the qualitative recognition of the existing roadside pollutants deposited in topsoils located close to roads with high traffic volume. So far, the studies have helped to determine the content of pollutants that accumulated over a long period of time. Traditionally, it has been difficult to distinguish between roadside pollution and pollution from other industrial sources. In order to avoid such problems and to accurately recognize present threats originating from road traffic, test-monitoring plots were installed in Poland (Gliwice and Opole), Germany (Tubingen, Ulm and Boblingen), Finland (Helsinki), Tajikistan (Dushanbe) and China (Lanzhou). To install th…
